View Full Version : Online note taking?

I usually do school papers and shit on 3-4 different computers, right?
And I usually bookmark my sources and pages and come back to them later for greater detail.
Is there a good online source to track bookmarks?
Like I could create an account, go in, and just have a list of links, and preferably give them nicknames for quick finding?
I'm sure other students do the same things I do, so I'm sure this isn't an original request, but I haven't been able to find such a website.
So I'm here.
Asking you fine gentleman and ladies.

I usually just e-mail important stuff I find to myself in gmail. That way I can pull up links or even papers I'm working on from there.

I don't use it myself, but might http://delicious.com/ be what you're looking for?

Google Bookmarks not do the thing for you?

I also use Google Notebook (http://notebook.google.com) for notes that don't necessarily contain links.

I have to go along with these two, as well.
I also use the Maxthon browser (http://www.maxthon.com/) and it syncs your bookmarks. (I sync home/work).

Also, a note about Google Notebook. Google stopped support for it. It still works, but they won't be doing fixes or anything for the foreseeable future, so you might want to find an alternative.
I use a combination of Microsoft OneNote and DropBox.

I do the same as well. I started using delicious to store all my research, work, and code snippet bookmarks after I switched computers a year ago and discovered how painful it is to export/import bookmarks in Firefox.
I'm also glad to see they have a .com url now. It usually took me 2 or 3 tries every time to remember how the .us one was spelled.

Foxmarks synchronizes bookmarks under a user name. It's a good Firefox extension. Total linked to it without explanation so I will not repeat his effort.

How dare you go and explain when I am clearly too lazy to do so?

I use a combination of Microsoft OneNote and DropBox.Well, crap. I didn't know that.
Might be a good time to switch to Evernote (http://evernote.com), then.

One thing to be aware of... One of my old professors announced at our last lecture that the Final would be open book and open notes, but no computers were allowed.
What I do to keep my notes modular is to use a binder. I take notes on loose leaf + hole punched paper, and if I need to add something between lecture notes like quiz results or what not, I just punch holes in it and stick it in my binder in the appropriate place.
Of course, I'm not addressing anything you're asking for, so I hope I didn't annoy you :P.

I've had that happen, but if your college has free printing that problem is quickly solved.
I used to use Delicious (http://delicious.com) alot. But nowadays I tend to use Evernote (http://evernote.com/) more.

You are AWESOME. I was using the Delicious add-on but I hated it. It re-did my bookmarks and took a lot of them out of folders, etc. It also would say it was syncing my bookmarks but wouldn't do it.
This is perfect for me. :)
If you can get into the beta Mozilla Weave is pretty good. Synchs bookmarks and tabs (like Google Browser Synch did). However Foxmarks is very good.

I actually just started experimenting with Evernote a couple of nights ago when I was looking for something to keep my notes on a project organized.
Highly annoyed that I can't find an equivalent to Omni Outliner for Windows, though.

I tried Evernote, but it didn't seem to feel right after using Google Notebook. Luckily, with my Technet subscription I was able to get a OneNote license for free. With DropBox it automatically syncs notes between computers, yet doesn't actually need to be online while I'm using it, and automatically syncs back up once I reconnect.
If you can afford it (around $80 last time I looked) or can swing a license for free/cheap, I have yet to found an alternative that comes close.

Hehe. I've been using it for quite some time. It had some issues in the beginning but now I think it is fantastic. The Delicious addon never got my seal of approval but to each their own.

I do/did the exact same thing, but I was also trying it with a group of people working simultaneously on the same OneNote file. That caused a ton of conflicts. As long as you aren't sharing the data with multiple people though, this is a great solution.
Also, if you are only needing bookmarks, Xmarks (used to be Foxmarks) is a great solution.

Ironically, this is *sorta* a feature of the product I have been developing these last several months that I totally intend to start shilling here in the near future, if permitted of course! ;)
For the record, I fully recommend OneNote, it is in the top 5 list of great pieces of software Microsoft have released!
My site ( as one launch feature ), allows you to mail arbitrary data, including HTML formatted data ( like hyperlinks ), and file attachments to make arbitrary lists of information, simply using email. You can also share these lists with other uses ( read and read/write ), and call them up on demand, via the website or email. It's not specific to your situation, but I am sure it would do the trick. It also allows you to easily post secured and unsecured files, and circumvent most workplace web browser firewalls... ;)
I am hoping to be in beta within this month, a very limited beta as I need to do alot of concurrency testing. I am hoping CoG will permit me to offer a limited slot exlusive beta to people here. Depending on how things go, it may be live within the next week or so.

So, I went to update the del.icio.us addon finally after playing with Windows 7. I hadn't realized how terrible the new versions was. They had to include a "Classic" setting just to get rid of all the useless crap that clutters up the UI with the default settings. Even then you still have useless crap cluttering up the Bookmarks menu that you can't get rid of.
It's always amazed me how badly developers can screw up even the simplest things.

I actually just started experimenting with Evernote a couple of nights ago when I was looking for something to keep my notes on a project organized.
One thing that Evernote does so well is making the transition between analogue notes and digital ones so seamless with their great text-recognition backend. I'm constantly snapping pictures of stuff I want to remember on my cellphone and plopping them into Evernote so that they become searchable later on.. I've done anything from drinks recipes to product descriptions to random signs on telephone poles, and it works just perfectly.
Highly annoyed that I can't find an equivalent to Omni Outliner for Windows, though.
I haven't used it myself, but I've heard very good things about TimeTo (http://www.davidberman.com/software/timeto.php) as a reasonable replacement for OmniOutliner.. Not much can touch the stuff that OmniGroup puts out, but you might want to give it a look if you need something for Windows.
