I thought this was pretty funny last night, but I can't decide if it's just coincidence or if they were playing off the meme, in which case the writers get alot of credit, whether for doing research or actually knowing the joke.

Yeah, there's no way that much of the audience got the film reference. Nor that they would laugh that hard at it.

I can't imagine how they could not be playing off of the meme.

How could it be a coincidence? Is the admiral screaming "It's a Trap" funny on its own, or is it funny when taken in context with the meme?
Also, I don't think the writers deserve too much credit. Most of them are probably 20-30 years old who spend half the day cruising the internet. The Epic Fial would be if they didn't know the meme.
edit: Although it was funny as hell watching Sheldon practice the line. I kept imagining him cruising 4-chan trying to learn how to be funny and make friends.

So tell me, why do shows still have laughter tracks these days?

If it is a take on a meme it would be one level higher than them doing something with Hamster Dance. Now if that episode came out a decade ago... then it would have been funny.
