View Full Version : Looking for something new, only finding blah...

I'm bored, I can't seem to stick with a game lately. For example, I used to love jRPGs but I just can't seem to stomach them any more. I tried playing Lost Odyssey and it was good but I just got bored. It seems the only things that hold my attention are more action oriented games. I've been working my way through Crysis and that's pretty fun, maybe it's just because it's pretty, I dunno.

I'm assuming my tastes are just changing as I get older but finding something to play is getting really hard. I went into the game store looking for something to new and my reaction to everything was, "blah." Has anyone else run into this? Sorry if this seems like a fragmented thought but I just can't seem to put my finger on it.

I miss the thrill of something new and a lot of what I see on the shelves from the last couple years seems like repeats. I think the only thing I am genuinely excited for right now are Fallout 3 and Left 4 Dead. Those actually feel like they are doing something new within the genre. What do you guys think?

Dead Space does look pretty cool. I might give it a rental.

Personally, I find my love for JRPG's rekindled whenever a new MegaTen game (Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga, Persona 3) or Level 5 game (Dragon Quest VIII, Rogue Galaxy) comes out.

Beyond that, if I feel the need for something different or fresh, I usually like to dip into weird Japanese games. Spigot's threads can be fun for that. Things like Ouendan, Incredible Crisis, and Mister Mosquito remind me that there are interesting things still to be done with games, even in established genres.

Then again, I also like playing games sometimes where when I pick up the controller and play, it makes me feel like I can do stuff I could never do in real life, and it makes it fun. The first Devil May Cry did that, as did the God of War games. I suck at action games, but these games make me want to get better because they're just fun to play.

Maybe what I'm saying is, if you're in a gaming funk, try to play something different, but something that's high quality and different. It might be a breath of fresh air.

I've been going back and trying to finish games that I, um, didn't finish. :) I'm in the middle of Dungeon Siege and FFXIII at the moment.

Sometimes it's not something new you need.

Sometimes I need to "recharge" my desire to game. Usually, it's because I need a break from PC games, or maybe I've been playing a lot of 360 games so I need to play more on the PC.

Reading also works.

I think the biggest thing is just not to force it. If you don't feel like playing a game, then just don't, find something else to do.

I've had mixed success with that. I went back and played Psychonauts and loved that. Last night I tried Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced again and realized how much I hated it. I tried going back to Advance Wars one and just couldn't get into it.

I think you may have a point though. I played a little of Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on my Wii this weekend (I know sacrilege but I never owned an N64) and that was pretty good, too. I think I may just need the right game and be in the right mood for it. At least until Fallout 3 hits. Then nothing gets done while I nuke everything and everyone LOL!

Dude! How on earth did you get FFXIII?

That's exactly right. The first time I tried to play FFVII I thought it was the dumbest concept ever and hated it. Six months later I went back to it and BLAMMO! Best. Game. Ever. lol :D

Dear god, why would you torture yourself with FFVIII this far after it has been released?

Because it's the only FF I've never finished, dammit. It's an open sore on my FF record.

Tell Spigot thank you but I am wonder, is it better than the demo? Because the demo was aweful.

I liked the full game. Sure it's a bit generic but it was fun. And I hear tell it's only $20 now and it's well worth that.

Actually, I'm the one who enjoys it. He doesn't like it. I was being "troublesome!" :o

I've been in the same boat lately. I've had trouble getting into any game..... and then along came Warhammer and I've been hopelessly addicted. Damn MMO's. I have a love/hate relationship with them. I really enjoy them, but I hate the time sink aspect of them and how they never really end, you just stop playing one day. I always feel like I neglect the other games I have that have definite beginning-middle-end aspects to them. I just got Spore and The Witcher and have hardly touched either one.

Johan, I'll gut you with a spoon.

Hunter, do you need a NEW game? Do you have a PS2 or BC-compatible PS3? If so, I know a lot of great PS2 JRPGs to recommend.

If you want something completely different and awesome, I highly, highly, HIGHLY recommend Persona 3: FES. It's cheap, great and very unlike almost anything else on the market.

Rogue Galaxy was also very good and between it and DQVIII, you'll have a hell of a lot more fun than you would with Blue Dragon, which is essentially Dragon Quest VIII with all of the good and fun sucked out of it.

And you can always have a look in my Obscure Game thread for some overlooked gems. Do you need the games to be on the home consoles or are handhelds ok? There is a lot of choice on both the PSP and DS when it comes to JRPGs.

I will agree though. Fallout is a fantastic game. I'm FINALLY sitting down to what I hope will be a complete playthrough of this game. I've had a copy of it and Fallout 2 sitting around my house and installed on machine after machine but I never tend to get around to playing through them. They're the kind of games that require a lot of effort and time and I just don't have that as often as I used to. I just got the Hi-Res patch installed on my laptop copy of Fallout though and it makes the game so much nicer to play. I wonder if I can finally make it further than Junktown in my quest for that water chip!

On any accord, given the size of the world, any time limit is just dumb as exploration is so important in these games.

It's like making sure you get the inventory mod for STALKER just so you have enough ammo to fight the mutant hordes at the end of the game.

Sadly, I haven't owned a PS2 for several years. In some ways I wish I had of kept it but I just got bored with the style of games. At the time there was no Okami, or God of War or anything like that. Just your typical sequels coming out.I think the last game I played on my PS2 was FFX, which I was enjoying for the first half of the game but then when it decided to tell me that Tidus was just a dream.

I think I just don't have the time or the inclination to sink 40+ hours into a single game any more but if I do find the time these suggestions will help. Thank you. :D

Anyone has any suggestions on where I can go to cause cool explosions on my computer screen? Crysis is fun and all but it's pretty much your cookie cutter FPS.

I was about to suggest Mercs 2... I don't think there is a PC version of it though. But if you like explosions, Mercs 2 is the way to go.

Oh man, I totally forgot about Far Cry 2! Hmmm I may have to wait on that one because that is the week before Fallout 3 and it'll just be put on a back burner. Thanks for the suggestion.

Any recommendations for something fun and fast paced with lots of replay value on the DS front? I am eye balling Puzzle Quest as I never ended up buying it but the PC demo was really fun. I know that's not fast paced but puzzle games are something I play to death. Tetris DS is one of my favorites and it almost never leaves my DS.

I was curious about the Witcher because of the enhanced edition. What's so awesome about it? I keep hearing that it is but I haven't heard anything saying what makes it so spectacular.

I've played games like NWN, Dungeon Siege, a bit of Fallout 1, KOTOR on the PC, Freedom Force and a few other PC RPGs and liked all of them. Based on those tastes do you think I would like it?
