View Full Version : Criminal Law Advice Needed

Anyone have a friend in law enforcement? Or a criminal attorney? I have a bit in my current manuscript where my main character perpetrates a crime against the company he works for, and I don't know exactly what the appropriate police jargon would be for the subsequent charges brought against him. If I could get some professional advice (which would probably take all of two minutes of someone's time), that'd be great. Unfortunately, I know no one off the top of my head with this type of expertise.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

What kind of crime? Extortion? Embezzlement? Fraud?

He breaks into the corporate office after-hours (but using his legitimate keycard), vandalizes some server equipment, and steals a small dataset.

Definitely sodomy.

"Definitely sodomy" is your 2,001st post. Seems fitting.

The server equipment destruction is definitely vandalism. The stealing of the dataset could be embezzlement, but it depends on whether or not there's some sort conversion of the goods into another form. Is the character selling the dataset to another interested party, or is he using it for his own purposes? If he's selling it, it's likely embezzlement. Otherwise, it could very well be grand larceny.
