Electronic Arts has really changed how we view the video game soundtrack. Eschewing the Japanese trend of releasing the scores to some RPGs as standalone albums, EA went in the direction of movie soundtracks. Today artists clamor to get a spot on the soundtracks to the EA Sports titles like Madden, FIFA and NBA Live. Now it seems like they're expanding that philosophy into more and more non-sports games, including the upcoming Mirror's Edge, the tracklisting for which follows:

ARTIST SONG
Lisa Miskovsky Still Alive – Mirror’s Edge Theme Song
Benny Benassi Still Alive – Remix
Junkie XL Still Alive – Remix
Paul van Dyk Still Alive – Remix
Teddybears Still Alive – Remix
Armand Van Helden Still Alive – Remix

I'm so confused by that track list. The entire track list is remixes of the same song?

Wait a minute....when did Junkie XL remix a Johnathan Coulton song?

No, EA. You can't make a theme song called Still Alive, hoping to ride on the coattails of another game's theme song with the same name. That would be like releasing a first person shooter named Goldeneye to piggyback on... oh, wait. Touche.

So.. are they still alive or what?

It's a remix album, so that's kind of the point.

Yeah, I thought the same thing when I saw the track listing.

... and then I realized it was EA. Carry on. Nothing out of the ordinary here. :)

The article just calls it the Soundtrack to the game, which makes me expect a series of songs from different parts of the game. There's also no source or anything to clarify that.

Hey now, they've got Junkie XL. I'm interested.

Still Alive is also the title of a song by Swedish singer Lisa Miskovsky, who contributed vocals to a few In Flames songs.

I found this through google and I didn't care enough to look further into it. I had actually never heard of her.

Hmm, well if the rest of the tracks are as good as the ones in the two main teasers so far I am interested.

I know that the initial teaser trailer used a remix of the song "Alive" by Alcorus. Since it was a remix, maybe they decided to call it "Still Alive", to signal a remix, but to also capitalize on Portal/JoCo.

She's very popular in Sweden though, and I assume that's why she ended up in DICE's game.

I have never cared for her music although she seems like a fairly interesting person. She is quite popular and was before the In Flames collaboration. I think it's pretty cool that they are using a Swedish musician but I wish they had chosen someone else.

Actually, the Alcours song was entitled "Shine" not "Alive". That Mirror's Edge song seems like it gets attributed to a different artist every month.

My interpretation is that DICE commissioned the song to a group, who may or may not be Alcours, but that group didn't retain any rights as part of the job. Lisa Miskovsky was hired to do the vocals, but she didn't have anything to do with the songwriting.

The song is written and produced by two well known producers, Rami Yacoub and Arnthor Birgisson.

I actually liked it more with female vocals. I'm reminded of Prince of Persia, almost.

Can't find the lyrics though (even when google was used.. lazily).

Well, you'd certainly know better than I would. There's been a lot of confusion about the songwriter for months on English language message boards, and I hadn't heard either producer being credited until the announcement today. It sounds like this information never crossed the language barrier.

It's always funny to me how many pop producers are Swedish. Damn you, Max Martin!

You say this like it's a good and wonderful thing.

Instead of having a composer do a proper score we've got a pack of morons with turntables and one whole song. Yes, that's much better then how the Japanese do things.
