What is it with companies trying - and failing - to translate popular real time strategy franchises into action games? First Starcraft: Ghost faded into nothingness, and now word comes that Electronic Arts has canceled the Command & Conquer based FPS: Tiberium.

The cancellation comes not because of any one technical issue, but in EA's words: The game was not on track to meet the high quality standards set by the team and by the EA Games LabelI've given EA a of of grief in the past, but the quality of their EA Games Label titles (i.e. not EA Sports, EA Casual or the Sims) has improved quite a bit over the last few years. They're no longer just throwing anything and everything they can out the door. They still don't take many risks, but the overall quality of their output has increased.

Of course this news is not something the people working on the title wanted to hear, and we of course hope they land on their feet.

The trailer didn't look to hot. Kind of generic. Although if you had a man in a green suit running around. You'd have gold.

Not going to work? Or not just yet?

I was wondering just the other day where this title had sneaked off to. I saw it on the cover of an old Game Informer as I was sifting through a discard pile, and my first thought was that its PR was sent to the back burner until after the holiday season. I'm sorry I was wrong. Preview optimism often gets the better of me and I couldn't help but look forward to taking a different path with CnC.

And I still feel for the cancellation of SC:Ghost. It bothers me a little every time I'm flying through Netherstorm in WoW and see Blizzard's monument to Nova.

Ghost is still on hold isn't it? Not canceled. Dude I still have hope for it. I keep hoping one day Blizzard will fake us all out and bring it back. That game was shaping up nicely in my eyes. :(

Right? I felt the same way. But a lot of Blizzard's innuendo on the subject made it sound like an "indefinite" hold, which wouldn't be so bad if that hold hadn't been in place for so long now.

I can't remember the exact language, but a Blizzard poster acknowledged questions about the game when they added the monument in WoW, and the response was very... melancholy.

But there's always hope. We know it couldn't have been cost issues, and the hold was put in place before any formal announcement of SC2, so...

But it's Blizzard. They normally don't want you to know until they know. Hmmm, they did kind of come out half assed with Ghost, a couple of times. Now they are working on StarCraft 2 AND Diablo 3 AND more WoW. It could be a lost cost but it's Duke Nukem Forever for me right now. Somebody has to be working on it still.

From all that I could tell, SC:Ghost is more or less canceled. They were doing it with one dev house, the game completely changed and moved to another dev house, and then went internal. When it went internal, they announced that it was on hold.

Tiberium wasn't looking too hot either, compared to the point that SC: Ghost had been when they put it on hold.

The less crap out there the better I reckon.

In retrospect. Looking at the video, if it had a story or or an attached name, it looks like it could of been some good. Right now it looks like it would of ended up the next Timeshift. Not profitable.

I had a feeling that they were going to can Tiberium.

This is a shame, there was so much potential in Renegade back in the day.

While it's a good thing to see EA pulling the plug for quality reasons, conceptually I was really looking forward to this one.

Ach, I'd almost forgotten about how excited I was about Ghost. Ah well, c'est la vie.

I think there was a lot of us hoping to see this turn into an updated Renegade but that trailer didn't show much promise. So in the eyes of Renegade fan this is sad news but in reality this is probably good news. Besides I don't think I'd have time for another FPS besides TF2.
