So... it was released a few days ago for those of you lucky enough to live in the USA or Canada. Has anyone bought it yet? Anyone care to share some impressions?

I'm thinking about sacrificing my free time to the God of Pokemon again, I'm considering ordering it through an eBay retailer based in the states cos it only comes out in the UK in 2 months. That being said, having recovered from my Poke Addiction of a few months ago, I'm not as driven as I was to buy it.

I was looking for some reviews on the game, and found this (http://www.gamesradar.com/ds/pokemon-platinum/review/pokemon-platinum/a-20090323111759430020/g-20081007154021142008/p-2) page which I thought had some interesting comments.

Better Pokemon storage system – When there were a mere 151 Pokemon in the good old days of Red/Blue/Yellow, the rudimentary PC boxes worked just fine for storing your catches. As our Pokedexes expanded several times over in subsequent generations, the storage system for captured Pokemon unfortunately did not keep pace. In fact it hasn’t really changed at all.

Above: Psst... put the Pokemon in here, please! If a Wailord can fit into a Poke Ball, surely all your Poke Balls can fit into a Pokedex

Collecting Pokemon has always been a cornerstone of the franchise, but for fans who really want to catch ‘em all, the 540 available slots in your PC’s 18 boxes are not nearly enough for the 493 available Pokemon, especially if you’re collecting variants like the pink and blue Gastrodons, Wormadams, all 28 Unowns, event-only Pokemon, Shinies, etc. To make matters worse, the PC system offers little in the way of organization, so collectors can easily waste hours shuffling Pokemon around in different ways. Why not integrate Pokemon storage with the Pokedex itself? You’d be able to look up captured Pokemon via various parameters like species, type, gender etc, and access Pokemon you’ve captured via their Pokedex pages. It’s a simple thing that would make life for serious collectors much easier.

More acknowledgment of the hardcore fanbase – Many of us spend tedious hours IV breeding to gain a competitive edge, so why not reward our toils by at least including an IV calculator Poketch app?

Above: IV breeding should be more transparent, but let's keep Shiny hunting a secret for the select few

And how about more in-game challenges that push the player to explore more of the game’s depth? Just playing through the single player game, you’d have no idea how much complexity lurks beneath the surface of Pokemon. Just like the news reporter in Solaceon Town who awards you with Poke Balls for showing him a specific Pokemon each day, it would be awesome if there were some structured challenges and rewards for fans who want to delve deeper into Pokemon’s endless possibilities.

The Battle Frontier does offer a general challenge, but we’re talking about specific battle, training or breeding related challenges that would push the player to expand their strategies. For example: use a STAB move effectively against the type it's weak to, use a particular status effect or weather condition to your advantage, breed a Pokemon with a specific advantageous nature, and so forth. This would allow solo players to enjoy more of what Pokemon has to offer without forcing them to sift through various fan sites and message boards on the internet.

Rerelease with all four regions accessible – Nintendo loves repackaging the old as new, so why not put out a super Pokemon compilation with all of the previous regions (Kanto, Johto, Hoenn and Sinnoh) available on one game? ‘Nuff said.

Personally I agree, they havent done enough innovation in the series. I mean, dont get me wrong its still addictive as all hell, but they could use some better UI mechanics and general usability improvements.

The PC Box system needs some SERIOUS reworking. It was a hassle back when there were only 151. They should all be thrown together and searchable. With tags.

So is this just a rehash of Diamond and Pearl with a different legendary pokemon?

There's a new pokemon type and stats have been rebalanced if I recall correctly.

Sounds good.

I'll probably wait until it drops in price, if at all.

Theres more to it than that, but not too much. The plot is slightly different, the gyms are slightly different, there are 200 pokemon in the sinnoh dex as opposed to 150, and there is more end game content in the form of battling stuff. And rebalanced stats and moves as has been mentioned, but its not too different.

So yeah, its not hugely different.

I picked it up and have spent some time with it. I like it, though I must admit that it is very similar to Diamond/Pearl. I am running into pretty different pokemon this time, and there are subtle changes but otherwise it is largely the same.

I was considering buying Pearl anyway, so its probably great for me.

Only problem is, I dont have much free time as it is and I'm supposed to spend what little I have writing my book (which of course I'm not). Sigh....

I would definitely go with Platinum over Diamond/Pearl if you don't have either of those yet. Or even if you do, and are a big enough fan.

I cannot say much for the addictive qualities, as this is my fourth pokemon game and it is still as fun to play as ever.

i agree as far as reworking the PC system. I'm excited for the pokemon tournament this summer. I've played since red. I have one legit left to get. and i'm starting to get quite a collection of EV trained pokemon.

Well, I've just ordered it from the US or Canada (cant remember where the seller was based). I ordered it through the Amazon.co.uk marketplace, which doesnt seem to have as many sellers from Hong Kong as ebay, if any.

I'm getting more amped for this game, which is a dangerous thing. I just hope I can keep the amount of time that I spend on it to a sane level. I'm also thinking of ordering a DSi, which would let me trade Pokemanz. I've already lost my mind, havent I?

I bought it at release, mainly because I wanted the little Giratina figure.

At first I was a little turned off, just because I couldn't shake the feeling I'd seen and done all this shit before, and while I was eager to see the new stuff, I found myself wishing I could just copy over my old team so I could breeze through to get to the stuff I actually wanted to see. It felt like buying an expansion that I had to replay the whole game again to get to.

It's started to grow on me again though. I got the second badge so I could raise my trade cap, and imported my burgeoning all-Ghost team. Only trouble I've been having is that single-type teams possess certain challenges. My Spiritomb helps as a trump card, but I could use more move variation. Plus, a lot of the ghost types have really shit moves at the low levels, so some of my guys like Shuppet and Gastly are pretty much useless right now.

I think also that they've ramped up the difficulty in this version. It seems like even at the low levels shit just takes more to kill, and some of the move selections in some of the trainer battles even seemed a little over powered. For fuck's sake I ran into like a level 12 Zubat with Toxic for crying out loud. I appreciate that they wanted to make it more challenging for those who were basically replaying the game, but they neglected to consider the real effect of that, since you're still pretty much starting from scratch. until you get about to the 6th badge and can just import your old team. It's also agitating for newcomers to the game like the friend I sold a bloody DS to just to have someone to play it with.

Diamond for me was a really refreshing change of pace as Pokemon games go, the difficulty curve was such that it felt sort of like the "WoW" of Pokemon games, compared to the EQ that was the originals. Platinum feels rather like a step backward on that front.

Still, it's fun enough that I've not tossed it in disgust, and once I get the 6th badge I'll be on easy street any way, so it's no big deal.

Well, I just ordered my DSi. That arrives next Friday, and my Platinum should arrive soon after that. Right now, I'm breeding pokemon and deciding on a team. What I plan to do, is build a team of level 1-5 pokemon in my Diamond game, and then transfer those over to Platinum after I get the second badge (or maybe even just the first). Then I can go through the game with a cool team, and they will even get the trade experience bonus.

Currently I'm thinking of
Chimchar
Treecko
Squirtle
Gible
Shinx
and a flying pokemon, maybe just regular old starly.

PS, J Arcane, I'm actually pleased that its a little more difficult. How much more difficult?

The NPC trainers in particular just seem a lot tougher than they were previously, like they've all loaded up the IV/EV values at the least. Moves you expect to one shot things don't get one shots, moves on the other guy's stuff will get one shots on you far more often. My friend had a fuck of a time in one of the gyms because the leader's last Pokemon was a Lucario that could some how one shot damn near everything with Metal Claw regardless of level or resistance.

On my own part, it also seems like XP isn't as fruitful, as I've had to do a lot more grinding than I'm used to from Diamond. In Diamond I only really had to grind that much towards the end to get ready for the final Four. In this one it seems like I'm having to grind just to keep up with the wandering trainers and gym battles.

I'm probably going to be really happy that my team will be 100% traded then, with that nice xp bonus, and they'll all be using lucky eggs too. Or at least those that need the extra xp (I think I have 5 lucky eggs, can always get more I suppose).

I'm teetering between PokeAddiction and that state of mind where you realize there are better things to do. I think its called sanity. Anyway, right now I'm happy to breed Pokemon that might be useful for Platinum, but I'm not really interested in playing more of Diamond. Theres still more that I could do in Diamond, like catch Heatran and one or two other legendaries (whoever I dont need an event item for).

Perhaps the reason for the lower XP is that the elite 4 are about 10 levels lower than in Diamond? So you wont have to grind as much for them.

I'm looking forward to some of the extra end game content, such as being able to rematch the gym leaders and the elite 4.

You know, after I gave some more thought to it, it is kinda amazing that they didnt change the storage system. I mean, the DS is so much more capable than the GBA, yet the system we get is a carbon copy of the GBA one. Yeah, the touch screen can perform one or two minor functions, but its faster to juse use the buttons. I mean, why on earth would they put the storage screen on the top screen when we could use the bottom screen? And dont tell me it would be impossible to make one interface from which we can move pokemon between the boxes and between the party and the boxes. Come on, it cant be that hard.

Thats the problem with pokemon games I guess - they are low on innovation. Still, they are addictive as hell.

The DS Pokemon games feel an awful lot to me like the developers didn't really know what to do with the touch screen. The few uses of it present feel almost like an after though, and are seldom useful enough to even warrant bothering to pull out the stylus.

The lack of touch screen control for the boxes is especially egregious I agree. For fuck's sake, the existing interface is practically point and click as it is, it would seem like an obvious choice.

Yeah, I agree with that. The touch screen is generally under used. I mean, I think the battle screen is good - those huge thumb friendly buttons are awesome. But, the storage system, the pokedex and the poketch all needed more work. I mean, in the case of the poketch, they only added a "back" button in Platinum! WTF! What they should have done, is dropped the whole retro 80's look and added some colour to it, and also, let the user have a thumbnail picker so you could choose your poketch app from a scrolling list. Like, dont show all of them at once, maybe 5 or so, and let the user scroll through them. And why not let the user put 5 commonly used key items as shortcuts at the bottom? ie tap here to use the bicycle. tap here to use the poke radar. Tap here to use the vs seeker. If they just spent 5 minutes thinking (and I hate to use this cliche but it is apt) out the box, they could have improved the interface so much.

I mean, I dig pokemon, I really do, I just wish that the people that made it put some more thought into each game instead of churning out sequel after sequel.

No, through US sellers through UK amazon. Pokemon platinum wont come out in the UK before May the 22nd, so if you want it early you need to order from the USA.
