Okay, I've decided to begin a D&D 4e play-by-post campaign. Anyone interested, please make your interest known.
The campaign I'm writing is high fantasy with a hint of steampunk.

Since Sandman and Doctor Finger are involved, I need to be. Just to make sure that what we started gets finished. Just Sazime and Vyzov are needed.

I've done this once before via email playing Legend of the Five Rings. I'll give it a shot. If people stay active it can be a lot of fun.
...of course, I have NO idea what changes 4th edition brought about. :(

If someone explains to me how the e-mail part of it works..I'd love to give it a go.I lay out a scenario, and we email back and forth to the group to make moves. I do all the dice rolls with an application, and report the results back to each of you. I'm still a novice at it, so it may be a bit bumpy at first, but I'm willing to give it a shot.

Would it be possible for me to "sit in" on the game? I'd be interested in watching, but I don't want to participate in more than one D&D game at a time.

Seems like playing by post, the game would progress at a snail's pace. Good luck, regardless.

You might want to check out something like dndonlinegames or mythweavers. Same basic idea, but it might ease some of the burden. Then again, if you love the way you're doing things, why mess with it? :)
I'm in seven games over at dndog. :o

Yah, I would be really interested as well, to sit in and just read the emails...Definitely need to start a mailing list ;)

Okay, we're at 14 players so I'm going to have to split into at least 2 groups. I'll set up a thread where we can pick classes and divvy up afterwards.
Not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet, but you should look into openrpg (http://www.openrpg.com/). My buddies in California and I play D&D every week (I'm in Ohio) using it and it works perfectly. You can set up maps, stats, rolls, everything and plays just like you're together and seems much much easier than email.
Just a suggestion and worth looking into.
I'm interested, but I have two emails that I am constantly on; but only one at a time. Will that be an issue?
DoctorFinger
10-08-2008, 10:07 PM
So long as you check that email account once a day or so it should be fine.
As for OpenRPG, we used that in our previous game, and it's only OK. But we're going for an email campaign this time.

Why not run it on a site like Myth Weavers (http://www.myth-weavers.com) ? Having it on boards might make it easier to follow, both for players and observers ;)
I've had some good play by post experiences, and Myth Weavers has built-in character sheets and dice rollers and everything.
Might be worth a look :)
Either way, I'm also definitely interested in this.

Okay, I've begun a game on Myth-Weavers (http://www.myth-weavers.com/games.php?gameid=2845). I hate to make all of you register on another forum, but it's the best way to run a game of this sort. I've also begun a social group here on CoG to help facilitate the game, so those of you who want to play should have an invite waiting for them (Ondo, it won't let me invite anyone to join w/o 25 posts. But you can still play over at M-W).
With the number of people wanting to play, we'll probably end up splitting into 3 groups, each running essentially the same campaign. Start thinking about what characters each of you want to play.
Anyone who wants to observe but not play, we'll let you know when we've begun, and you can just head over to the Myth-Weavers link.

Awesome. This is a homebrew campaign, yes? Any thing to keep in mind in terms of differences from the 4E PHB? (ie: Custom Races, Classes, Equipment, etc)
DoctorFinger
10-09-2008, 04:17 PM
At this point there are no rule changes. The different races all look a little more human than in most campaigns, but they still have all the listed abilities. It's (very) high fantasy, so there will be some neat stuff you don't see so much in other campaigns.
But eventually I want to add a couple of steampunk-esque classes and skills to the mix, in keeping with the story I'm telling. I'm going to poke around over the weekend and see of someone has some custom classes up I could use.

Looks good...really tempting to join, but I know I'll just fall behind :(
So, I'll be an observer this round :)
So what sources are you allowing? Is it PHB only, or can we use character options from the Forgotten Realms Player's Guide, like the Swordmage? What about stuff published in Dragon, like the Warforged and the playtest Artificer and Barbarian?
Rogue_hunter

Also, I've changed the group from invite only to moderated, so if someone wants to join, just look at the groups page and apply.
So I registered over at Myth-Weavers, and tried joining the campaign as a prospective player. I can't tell if that worked or not.

This should be post 25. :)
Start thinking about what characters each of you want to play.
I'm fine with either a Warlord, Fighter, Ranger, or Warlock - so I may just wait and see which would fit better, if that would be helpful.

We're at 6 players for each group already, so we can only take on 2 more players max. If you want to play you'd probably have to play as either a Warlock or a Paladin.

It's day 4 and we've had a very minimal response in Alpha group so far (3 of 6). I'm not sure what speed we're planning on playing at, but I figure one post per day average wouldn't be much of a stretch.
In hindsight, perhaps the groups should have been divided by posting frequency...?

It is kind of remarkable how slowly the games have been going. At this rate, two rounds of combat will take a week.

I'm still new to the whole DnD thing, so I'm trying to figure out what is most needed.
Goodness gracious, you're right. Group Alpha had its first encounter 96 hours ago, and it hasn't dealt any damage yet (unless you count the crit fail one opponent made)
Meanwhile, Group Beta had its first encounter 96 hours ago, and it hasn't so much as taken an action or rolled a die yet.
Jesus. At this rate the players will die of old age before any character has to spend a healing surge.
EDIT: I mean no insult to people by this; you play at the pace you're comfortable, and if you're just getting started, obviously you'll be slower. But if you're confused, I strongly recommend saying "I'm confused" or "I'm not sure what to do" rather than just being quiet. You'll have more fun that way. You're not going to learn by staring at the screen, you'll learn by doing something profoundly stupid and getting mocked for it.

They're running the same campaign in parallel. My intent was to see how the two groups would diverge, because there are a number of spots where that can happen. Now I'll just engineer a 'crisis' to bring the heroes of Universe Alpha and Universe Beta together.

I know Myth Weavers allows for some ease in managing a campaign, and by no means do I wish any more work on Doc's part, but I wonder if the old style of receiving an actual email would work better?
I think a lot of the inertia is due to people forgetting they signed up to play.
You can subscribe to the game forum, and have the forum software e-mail you when someone's added a new post.

I used to play alot over email, and playing over the forum feels like it works really well. And it doesn't raise my email count or get lost. :)
Anyway, thanks to whoever suggested the site. Even tho the game snagnated, I'm still enjoying that place.
I'm bumping this thread in the hopes of reawakening the players. :)
I'm awake, but group beta doesn't really have anything to do right now. :(

In all seriousness, I think forum/email RPGs are best played with a group of 3-4 people who are willing to post on average of once per day. We don't have this right now. :(

If you're looking for a dedicated player, there's a guy in my office, a real cool cat who's looking for a game. I'll give him the link to this thread and tell him to reply! He's seriously looking for a game to join up with.
He's a miniatures gamer, and LOVES D and D. He's in my tabletop game, and we've paused for the holidays (damn my adulthood).
He also is a big fan of Dipswitch. (Plug-Plug)

An UPDATE for all of you who were participating, not participating, lurking, whatever:
It appears both groups have been officially merged and the campaign has continued!

Altho, at least from watching, it seems like it is being rather sluggish about it. :)

Sorry man, not only is this some serious frickin' thread necromancy on a first post, but this game is LONG dead.
