View Full Version : Simple pleasures

I'm sure we all have that thing (or things) that we absolutely love because they either make life easier, more enjoyable, or more exciting. It might be something big, or maybe something small, but it's there and you would miss it greatly if it weren't.

For me, it's my mouse. I purchased a logitech G7 way back in the day and it has been the greatest mouse I've ever owned. About a week ago it started to act up after years of faithful service, and has since died. I ordered another one off ebay because the G7 is no longer in production and no other mouse could take its place. With hot-swappable batteries, on-the-fly sensitivity adjustment, no lag (perfect for gaming), and the fact that it's cordless, I don't understand why they even make other mice. It's just a simple little thing, but it makes life a lot easier.

What's the one thing you couldn't do without? And please, let's limit it to inanimate objects since pets and family members are just too easy.

On the mouse topic I have a Logitech Mx 518 and I don't know how I got along without it. It's a beautiful piece of hardware.

One thing I couldn't live without would be my glasses. I don't realize how awesome they are when they are on, but when I have to take them off for something (as I have done in the past for plays or swimming) I feel like a different person.

The phone that Sl1pstre4m gave me. It's a WinMo smartphone (HTC Excalibur, also known as T-Mobile Dash), and I don't care what anyone thinks of that platform, it changed my habits overnight. I can surf the web and email, sure, but the biggest thing is the ability to sync my email, contacts, and calendar online or through ActiveSync. I've started using the calendar a lot (I am notoriously bad at keeping appointments) and knowing that my Gmail calendar matches my phone calendar matches my Outlook calendar is very reassuring.

The devices I use most throughout the day would be this (my laptop) and my HTC TyTN II phone. I guess I'd have to go with the phone because it keeps me in contact with family, friends, work and play 24x7. Until the battery runs out after about 6 hours. ;)

Also: sitting on the hammock out back reading. Beautiful outside today.

My iPod. I was hesitant to buy one because I was unsure if I would use it, but I find I use it all the time. In the car, in the shower (I have some speakers in the bathroom set up so I can shower with some tunes), on my Xbox [well...until today. Looks like the 360 has finally hit the dust. JUST IN TIME FOR FALL!]...I really would miss it.

Best $250 I ever spent.

I began riding my bike into town and to school and stuff this summer/fall. Not only do I hardly ever have to get gas, but I'm losing weight and I get tons of time in the outdoors exercising/time to listen to podcasts/music and have met some cool friends doing so. Every time I go out on my bike I feel like a whole lot of stress is just lifted off of me too. I love it.

I would have to go with the iPod as well. Without it I would be forced to listen to the fat ugly yentas I work with yentering about their worthless lives while shoveling food into their faces.

It's probably in use at last 8-10 hours in my Monday - Friday life. With the bonus of also having various movies and tv shows on it, it helps for those dull moments of the day, which tend to be from 7:30 - 4:30. :)

TiVo. I work from 5pm-2am on weeknights, right through when all of the prime time TV is on. Previous to getting a TiVo, I had to downtalk all of the garbage my peers watch on speculation and assumption alone. Now that I can record and actually watch the garbage for myself, I'm able to act like a pretentious, morally superior douche with confidence and first hand experience. Plus, I like the bloops and blips it makes.

Although...

It's got little "thumbs up, thumbs down" buttons that you can press to voice your approval/disapproval of whatever you're watching, and then the TiVo will use this to make "intelligent" suggestions of other things you may want to see. The other day I had Showtimes "Erotic Confessions" in my Tivo Suggestions list, prompting me to wonder just what the hell I'm giving the thumbs up to, and how the machine is evaluating that data. I was unaware that recording marathons of The Dog Whisperer meant I have a desperate, unvoiced longing for sofcore pornography. I am frightened, and yet, impressed by the accuracy of this sophisticated technology.

I'll go with the iPod. I've been a music lover since I was bucking the disco trend back in the 70's. I hate radio! I've got a huge LP collection and have re-activated some of my stereo equipment to rip my vinyl albums to MP3. The iPod makes it easy to listen to what I want to listen to... with no commercial interruptions!

My motorcycle! I've been riding motorcycles since I was 12 years old; I couldn't live without one! Nothing blows the cobwebs out or relieves stress more than hopping on the bike and taking a rip around town.

Cats!
Death thought about it. "CATS," he said eventually, "CATS ARE NICE." :D

at work there is this PR guy from one of our 2 local cable companies (Knology) and he personally set me up with HD-DVR, which totally rules!

i can record all my favorite shows and set it to record each week in the same time slot..(i'm sure TiVo does this too??) but the best part is it's totally free!

Reading a good book.

Out loud. To my girlfriend.

Now.. I know you said to limit it to inanimate objects, but damn it, this is just too simple, and such a complete pleasure, that I refuse to abide by your draconian regulations!

Pick a great book, turn off all the electronic whizmos around the house, pour some nice wine, a G&T, or whatever floats your boat, cuddle up, and just spend some time reading to one another.. it's the best.

Used to my Sansa MP3 player, that is until I stepped on it and broke the LCD screen. It really is wonderful to have your entire music library at your finger tips. Plus the FM radio on it lets me listen to NPR on my way to and from classes, keeping me at least modestly up on current world and national events. Life is much more quiet and lonely without it.

My record player. I just got a big box of stuff today that I ordered a while ago and have done little but lay on the floor and listen to them. Riding my bike is another pleasure. And when possible going out on my friends boat, sitting up front with a book and a pack of cigarettes. Nothing better than being out on the bay on a beautiful day and reading a book.

Crunchy fall leaves were my simple pleasure today! Those moments of feeling connected and aware of the expanse of nature and the seasons are simple pleasures, and I'd miss them greatly.

Also, coming home after class in the dead of winter and making a cup of tea.

Going to the library and opening a really old book.

And being able to play my DS for a little while right before falling asleep.

All I'm saying is this: I'd usually prefer a smoking drinker to someone completely opposed to both. Because at least they would be more laid back (and thus more fun).

I like walking on the earth barefoot while it's raining. I've only did it a few times, but something feels right about bare foot on grass, or mud even. A looong shower is a good substitute.

I don't think it's the particular music player, but the opportunity to have your music with you pretty much any time.

I like the shower concept. Showers help wash away a lot of the chronic aches and pains that I'm starting to accumulate.; and I like being clean.

Bamboo. We have a stand of bamboo outside our bedroom window. It rustles in the wind, it makes wonderful effects with the sound of falling rain and the shadows that play across our sheer curtains are living art.

I love old book smell. When i come across an old book in the library, i'll spend the first few minutes flipping through the pages and smelling it. I've got to look like a complete freak to other library goers, but it's better than new car smell.

I've got another one. The smell of wet asphalt. Walking down the street after a light rain gives off a wonderful oder that reminds me of my childhood.

Breasts. No, really. Just seeing them seems to ease my burdens and sends me back to younger, more carefree days.

If you're a woman, I thank you.

Also, on a related note, I love the feeling of fingers running through my hair. It's as good as a massage, for me.

But, again, those are simple pleasures. I'd find it hard to live without the convenience of the Internets, for example, but I'd hardly consider it “simple.”

Last night at a bar, I lent my lighter to some hot young lady, and when she returned it, she did so holding it out in her palm. I took it, and she did this nice little maneuver where she flipped her hand around, and rubbed the top of mine gently. I didn't have the balls to close the deal, but that was definitely a simple pleasure that I will remember for some time.
