Being as sick as I was and having little concentration for video games, I hit the bed early and decided to knock out the last few pages of the Max Payne script I'd been reading since July.

The draft is from August of '07, so it's probably the final version with maybe a few minor edits here and there.

Got any questions about it, just ask.

Did it blow?

It isn't great. It's a typical action flick, even though the action doesn't really ever seem to ramp up. It does get pretty hectic in the last probably...10 or 20 minutes of the film.

With the exception of Mona being in this one, it sticks pretty true with the story from the game.

In the hierarchy of video game films where would you place this one?

I'd have to get back to you on that one.

Well I can give you 4 at least...Silent Hill was good and I enjoyed the Resident Evil Trilogy.

Thanks for reminding me. I'd say it's Silent Hill worthy.

But does it have the cajones to compete with a masterpeice like Street Fighter?

Well, it obviously lacks two VERY important things to measure up to that classic piece of cinema.

Jean Claude Van Damme and his Hair?

Jean Claude Van Damme and his Hair?

I was thinking Van Damme and his Special Kicks.

I really dug Silent Hill, RE not so much (I think they got progressively worse, and what was wrong with sticking to the game's stories?), Hitman not so much (they did really well with the art direction, but the story, actors, and love interest ruined it). I can't really think of any other video game to movie adaptations that are worth mentioning, so consider the three I detailed pretty much the best of the crop.

How long does it spend on the blood trail dream sequences? Does it feature the dramatic moment when Max Payne gets all the way to the end, falls off the blood trail, and has to start from the fucking beginning? I expect at least an hour of repeated falling and inching along the lines to match the genius of the game.

What's the deal with all the flying vulture people? They've been more and more prevalent in each trailer. At first I assumed they were just part of a dream sequence or a drug hallucination, but now I'm not so sure.

I'm such an idiot, I mean to ask this. Max Payne is very dear to me and if they fuck up this movie, I'm never forgiving Marky Mark or Fox.

Nah, the occult stuff is in there just as it was in the game.

But you probably mean

In that case, yes. They are drug hallucinations.

They are a result of the drugs, there aren't actually flying angel things.

People always bitched about that section. I finished up my replay of Max Payne last night and didn't die once in either nightmare section. Plus, the game has a quick save key which you could make copious use of if you couldn't manage to walk in a straight line.

She shows up and drugs you because she thinks you'll get her sister killed, and then she shows up later, apparently working for Nicole Horne, but gets shot anyway.

Damn. Been a while since I played it. Then yeah, it really sticks to the story then. But with more involvement from Mona.

It looks like they have some romantic relationship (sex sells!) which is off since they almost, but didn't quite, hit it off till the second game. I worry because the first game was all about Max getting to the bottom of his Wife and daughter's murder. I don't want him to be sleeping around with assassin's while he's at it. Save it for the sequel when he's older and over it.

I couldn't remember how much she was involved in the first game either, which is why I wanted to play through it again before the film came out. I'm surprised that it sticks so close to the game, since the game's three chapters (the local mob, the Russian and the mob boss, then Aesir) are very distinct, and seem like they'd be hard to coherently push into a two hour movie. Plus, the weird government conspiracy angle that pops in almost out of nowhere after hours of mobster angles seems like it would be really strange in a movie.

I'm going to play through MP2 now. I don't remember the plot of that one either; I figured that the movie might end up a conglomeration of the two games.

Not a single bit of sex (with the exception of maybe a titty bar or something) in the script I read and nothing between Mona & Max.

You are just delivering tons of good news today! The trailer makes it look like Mila Kunis gets naked and eventually has sex with Max, but I'm glad to hear it's probably something else entirely! (Her enticing some soon-to-be victim?)

Keep in mind that things could have changed from the script I read and what was used for filming.

They should release those as mini webisodes ala BSG!
