View Full Version : Puzzle Quest: Galactrix (DS vs. XBLA versions)

I'm aware that this game shipped for multiple platforms, but I figured I'd create this thread for the DS version at least...

I played the XBLA version and it took a while to get used to the hex playing grid and wrap my head around having to think about what direction I'm swapping in to control the direction of fall-in after breakups.

However, one thing I didn't like about the XBLA version was how everything is crammed onto a single screen so it got overwhelming at times and sometimes it gets tricky figuring out what I'm looking for and where to find it.

When I picked up the DS version I was surprised at how different it plays compered to the XBLA version -- I like the interface better and it's easier to tell just what's going on. Plus the story is for some reason more engaging than the XBLA version -- probably due to the cleaner interface in general?

Another thing that was a HUGE improvement is using the stylus over the analog stick for swapping pieces. The stick is a major pain when you're able to swap in six directions, especially on the timed hacking puzzles.

It's frustrating because the DS came oh so close to being the superior version if not for a few crippling bugs:

1) The loading times. This game has the worst loading times I've ever seen in a DS game. Just WTF is taking so long during the loads? It's a 2D game for crying out loud! I've worked on a couple of DS games in the past and I find that you'd have to be extremely sloppy to have load times that long on a DS.

2) The map is glitchy as hell. I'm seriously blown away by the fact that this game shipped in this state -- it's THAT buggy. When you leave the solar system to bring up the interstellar map, sometimes tapping the screen causes the map to jerk to some random location, making you have to scroll back to your location so you can try again at selecting a destination.

Even worse is when you're in a solar system -- often when you're trying to enter a planet and you have to make a choice in the pop-up menu... tapping on the menu often makes it go away and your ship inexplicably flies off to a random corner of the map -- which forces you to click on the planet/base/station you just left so that you can circle around and fly back to it so you can try again. This is incredibly annoying because at one point I've had to click on a leapgate EIGHT times before I was able to select "Hack this gate". Considering how slowly the ship flies and have to circle around, this took me about 3-4 minutes just to choose the fucking "Hack this gate" option when it should've worked on the first try!

There are other glitches but these two are the worst I've run across.

Bottom line:

While this game is fun and addicting (I'm already level 16) I still kinda wish I can return this game and wait until D3 ships an updated version with the bugs fixed and the load times eliminated.

Does it cheat as bad as the original PQ? I can honestly forgive glitches so long as the game doesn't outright cheat.

So far the cheating really hasn't been as bad. At one point I was locked in a battle vs. a boss and it was pretty tense because there were mines (aka skulls) everywhere, and only one move would bring them together to give your opponent an easy way to hurt you.

Neither of us wanted to move anything and instead used special attacks on each other... so I got the impression the AI was actually trying to hurt me via conventional means rather than using some bullshit "lucky" breaks. :D

The fact that they fall in from different directions really help because you can at least control where new pieces are coming in from. If mines are on one side of the field, then if you want to play it safe, make sure to bring in new pieces from the other side of the field so they don't "luckily" end up close to the mines and give the AI an easy way to hurt you.

On top of all that... you can break blue gems to restore your shields so that's an extra layer of depth to the battle system that I appreciate. Decision: Do I heal or hurt him?

I may just have to check this out then. I really wanted to like PQ, but the cheating just got me too discouraged to continue playing it.

It's not out on XBLA, are you talking about the PC version?

I played it on PartnerNet.

Even the PC version would be superior because you could click on the puzzle pieces instead of having to use the stick to swap a piece up-left vs. down-left, etc.

I'm playing the DS version. And I like it. The loading times don't bother me that much. Yes they are complete bullshit but I'm so used to watching loadscreens in games like Fable 2 or whatever I can handle the downtime. It's something I'm used to.

I haven't run into any bugs though. The only thing I find fiddly is that sometimes you still make the wrong move. I found out it's easier to doubletap on both icons you want to switch instead of sliding them. That sometimes fucks up the result.

The battles can take very long though, which is kinda annoying for a handheld. Also a lot of external story, screens, management going on. My GF was complaining about the fact that it sometimes takes a while to get to a Puzzle and when she did she did one fight for half an hour. And she's incredibly good at PQ (still plays it a couple of times a week for over a year now).

Maybe they are taking it a little bit too serious this time around would be my major complaint.

I've been playing the DS version in my free time and I agree, the bugs are annoying as mess. Hard to select anything in a menu :/.

Load times are more of a minor annoyance but I was wondering why the game has so many considering it's being loaded off a cart and not CD, like you've said it's the longest load times I've seen for a DS game.

The battles themselves seem a bit "laggy" on my DS, especially with the way the gems falls. Having gone from the PC demo to the DS version it was horribly noticeable...

Sounds like the DS version is one to skip.

But then, on the other hand it seems like the interface is much better. Plus, PQ as a series is such a handheld game.

Yep I like the DS's interface better than the other versions since the less important stuff are on the other screen where you don't have to look at them unless you really cared about them. The portability is another sweet bonus and is in fact the game I play on my daily commute.

That's why I say that if it wasn't for the glitches, it would easily be the superior version.

Oh you mean when the computer would throw out 4 like colors on top of each other from off screen then giving the cpu an extra turn. Wait...make that 7 extra turns....yeah...that game cheated pretty bad.

Though later in the game, by the time I was around level 50 there was no competition what so ever. I would completely destroy anything that got in my way. I had a system of combos set up to just plaster the enemy quickly. The game was fun, but it did cheat. I think it was the only way to add difficulty to the game in the later stages.

In Galactrix, only 5 of a kind will give you a bonus turn whereas a 4 of a kind gives you just a small bonus (i.e. gives you 6 red "mana" for a red 4-of-a-kind). It's much more balanced that way, and 5 of a kinds are rare enough that it's not annoying.

I'm at the point in the game where the missions are seriously annoying me -- I'm only level 21, but all the missions I have require me to beat a level 40 enemy. Ugh....

I'm playing on PC, interface works just fine with mouse. :p I haven't run into any bugs either.

I'm in the same spot BlackPete, lvl 20/21 and the only quests I have involve fighting massive ships with 7 slots and twice my shields/armor. I bought the freighter that holds 1500 stock and am just doing a bunch of mindnumbingly boring mining so that I can get a big ship.

I think this one cheats just as bad as the other one, it is just not as noticeable due to the increased complexity of the playing field. When the guy gets 20 each of his favorite colors and does 60+ damage to you in one turn, most of it from stuff that was off the edge of the map when he made his move you know something fruity is going on.

GameFly is selling the DS version for about $17.

So I picked up the DS version for $17 last week and am having a good time with it - except for the goddamned fucking Leapgate hacking bullshit fucking game. Which, of course, you have to do multiple times in each system in order to go anywhere.

Seriously.
