View Full Version : Albums of the Month for October

Through PMs, Whunpo and I have collaborated to resurrect the Album of the Month thread from EvAv.
What this boils down to is that we are asking the community what is your *one* album (limiting this to one per person because it's a lot of albums to listen to in the end) that you feel is underheard and should get some more attention. The goal of this project is to introduce more people to this particular artist.
At the end of each month, Whunpo and I will choose the three albums that we feel are the least heard out of all the nominations and then we will add our own album nominations - this is a total of five albums a month.
So, we welcome your suggestions! This runs until the 25th of this month, and on the 1st of November, a thread will be up with the results.
Edit: Also: we will entertain any suggestions you might have.

Since someone mentioned this album in the music thread, and because the band is in the midst of a comeback, Loveless by My Bloody Valentine gets my vote this month. It's not easy listening, and will take a few spins before you "get it," but this is a beautiful album.

This came out in September, but I'd also recommend any of their past albums:
TV On the Radio - Dear Science

My "one" album would have to be David Bowie's Hunky Dory. It edges out The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars in my mind. Just barely.

That was going to be my choice, but I'll have to throw out:

I nominate...
Have Heart - Songs To Scream at the Sun

It is non-hating, non-agressive hardcore with amazing lyrics.

I also suggest that we crucify whomever nominated Bullet For My Valentine.
That's My Bloody Valentine, not Bullet For My Valentine. The key differences are in the name, and that MBV doesn't suck.

Porcupine Tree - Lightbulb Sun

I found myself listening to this album again last night. Porcupine Tree has a lot of great albums out there, and while this one isn't their best, it's still a fantastic album with a few tracks that aurally are reminiscent of some of Led Zeppelin's songs. It was recently re-released with a 5.1 mix disc that makes it sound even better.

I'll throw in a relatively new album.
Okkervil River - The Stand Ins (http://www.emusic.com/album/The-Stand-Ins-The-Stand-Ins-MP3-Download/11279173.html). (linked to eMusic, as they usually have samples and a good player).

Well, I win this one. Agua Y Luz by Gala Évora, featuring collaborations with Seu Jorge (who did Portuguese David Bowie covers for The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou), Salif Keita and others. It's a new album by a new artist (her first solo album at least) that's pretty much exclusive to Spain, and it's absolutely amazing.
She's so 'little heard of' that my favorite songs of hers haven't even been uploaded to YouTube!

This is a PERFECT suggestion. Exactly what I was hoping for when I thought of this idea.
I don't think older artists are bad (and we will definitely have older albums), but new bands and albums NOBODY has heard about will make this all the more interesting.

As far as bolstering the power of recommendations, the songs I refer to are primarily "Al Otro Lado Del Mundo", "Borra de Mí Esta Tristeza", and "Agua de Rosas". "Ay, Pena, Penita" is great especially for Seu Jorge fans since he's the other half of the duet, but it's easily the slowest song and does not infer much about the rest of the album (but it IS on YouTube).

Could I ask you guys to post a general genre along with the album you suggest? We're looking to get a bit of a genre variation from each of the albums.

You can DL the album in MP3 format for about $7 off Amazon. Has track previews as well.

Go along with yours how? Our two album additions will keep in tune with the same theme: underheard albums that deserve promotion in an attempt to get people into those bands/artists.

I had the impression he meant 'go along' as in five of the submitted albums plus two of yours rather than three submitted and two of yours.
The original plan is to make it a total of five albums per month, including Whunpo and I's album nominations. If you guys want a total of seven albums per month, then we could go for that as well.
Otherwise, I'm not quite sure if I am understanding what you're trying to explain.

I guess I think it should be random, and not people deciding which unheard of bands get to be our focus. There should be a pool of albums that is crafted via suggestions and pull 3 out every month that we should all listen to and discuss.

Dude, that's exactly what this is. The only thing us two are doing is putting the threads up with extra information about the album, i.e, genre, general band/album information, etc. This isn't a contest to see which albums get 1st, 2nd, 3rd place.
Does the album have to had come out in October? Or can I just throw one out there?

That's what I was referring to. That makes it sound like you guys pick 3 of the albums that we suggest, and then you two get your two albums put in. That doesn't sound like what I suggested. I was just suggesting that there be no selection process. The albums would be randomly chosen.

@TheEpicOfTyler (It doesn't want me to quote you for some reason)
I don't see how they could be randomly chosen. Even if they were, with a bit of guidance from me and Shadowstorm, we can get a bit more variation in genre, and all that.
We have been asking for suggestions the whole time. If it is a major concern of everyone that me and Shadowstorm are including a few other albums, we can stop. But as Shadowstorm said, this is not a competition of albums. It's a way to introduce people to new music they might not have heard otherwise.

It'l give me a better excuse to buy it.
Also, Lance Uppercut, Loveless might not be best for this, as Isn't Anything is wayyyy less heard.

I never said or implied a competition of albums. I was just saying that, 5 albums is a lot, and I don't really understand the need for moderation. Just pick the albums randomly out of the suggestions and if there is need for moderation, it will come from the group.
It's your guys thing though, so just go with what you want. Not trying to start conflict. D:

There is no requirement to listen to all albums to discuss. But 5 albums in the course of a month doesn't seem like too much to me. But if finding 5 albums is hard/a problem, we can scale it back.
Well there needs to be someone posting threads, keeping things on schedule, and something has to choose albums, even if it is random.
I don't see why you like the idea of random so much. Explain what benefits there are.
It's not a conflict. As we said, we want suggestions. Me and Shadow don't see where you're coming from though. However, if the rest of the community wants it all to be random, that's what we can do. So the rest of you, speak up!

The month's end approaches...
edit: And with that, an UPDATE!
"Me Voy Pa' Cai", one of the few songs on Gala Évora's album Agua y Luz that I can actually show you guys through YouTube, can now be purchased digitally through Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Me-Voy-PaCai/dp/B001GT5ITW/ref=sr_f2_1?ie=UTF8&s=dmusic&qid=1224922470&sr=102-1)! That's right, it's such an obscure album that the song's only there as part of a largely unrelated compilation CD.

I chose this album because a song from it was recently put on Rock Band earlier this month, so there's a chance a lot of you have heard it recently (Cream and Bastards Rise (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3XKAENbs7g).) And being free, there's also a good chance you'll download it. Its actually been online freely since 2005, regularly creeping back into my playlist since, and deservedly so. I honesty love every song on the album, though I do have favorites (1, 4, 8.)
