Hey guys, I'm thinking about dropping $30 for one of these titles, but I'm having trouble deciding. Any opinions?

Dragon Quest IV
Final Fantasy IV
The World Ends With You

I'd go with Dragon Quest IV, but only if you're a fan of that style of RPG. Otherwise, TWEWY is supposed to be fantastic. I really hate the way they remade FFIV, so I can't really recommend that one.

I'd say, get The World Ends With You (which I have not played, but hear it's neat/original) used and get the GBA version of FFIV.

TWEWY is great if you end up enjoying the stylus-based combat. It has excellent music, a decent story, and a very unique style. That said, I couldn't stand the combat, so I didn't get far.

If you don't have Lunar Knights, and you can find a copy, get that.

Keep in mind TWEWY is considered an "action" RPG. That said TWEWY is a game that will keep you occupied. I'm a huge fan because the battle system was fun, grinding for better "pins" was never boring. The setting for me was really interesting and the whole "angry adolesent" goes shopping never bothered me. The best part for me though was the themes the storyline explored. I don't think the themes received more recognition due to the vehicles of the characters.

I'd go with TWEWY, it was probably my top game of '08. (others might not think so, but meh to them!)

Battle system was cool along with the variety of attacks. I liked how you could change the difficulty on the fly to get different pins (since they're attacks in this game), and I thought the story was great.

Actually TWEWY is generally liked by most. It's one of the few titles that I see most agreeing on. And i'm glad someone else enjoyed the story besides myself...

Isn't DQV out and meant to be one if not the best in the series? DQIV got reviewed OK but to me it seems pretty simplistic by today's standards. Anyway, I suppose I would get DQV, with TWEWY as the second choice.

I loved TWEWY. I'm still hunting down stuff in the post-ending part of the game, so it has legs.

Might I recommend My World My Way? Pout points FTW!

I'll make it easy for you. If you get anything other than The World Ends with You, I'll perma-ban you from the forums.

Problem solved! :D

Sadly I'm in the minority who couldn't get into the combat system of TWEWY. It felt too random :(

I might finish P3 AND P4 before you ever hunt down the post-ending files :p

You can recommend MWMW to the OP but I'm not sure that game is going to be appreciated by to many. Well outside of the usual Atlus zealots and those who like offbeat...and I do mean offbeat titles.

I've been playing DQIV during class, but I also love FFIV. So I guess you should base your decision on play-style. but I'm a squeenix whore, so I guess I'm biased :D

But DQIV is a LOT of fun and really fast and easy to get into. FFIV is more linear, so it's pretty much fight fight fight boss story, repeat.....

Some other stuff

Etrian Oddyssey is rockhard but worth it imo.
I just started Blue Dragon and that is fun

Eclessia has some serious levelling and exploration involved.

I finally got into TWEWY after having it sitting and looking longingly at me for months (books and portable share from the same pool of time, and '08 was a novel heavy year for me) and have to agree with the love heaped on it. Took a bit to get into, but only because the game plays drastically different to any reference I had. But after getting it, I freakin' love the battle system.

I'd like to hear from people who have played both Revanant Wings and Blue Dragon Plus (since from all accounts they're the same game) and hear what people liked more.

EO is really worth it. It's a fun dungeon crawler and again this is from someone who usually doesn't like getting their head handed to them with a learning curve in a game. What I liked is patience does pay off and you're rewarded.

Ecclesia and serious levelling? That is such an understatement ;)

Spigot is going to play...*GASP* a Blue Dragon game? The apocalypse is upon us!

I've already got Revenant Wings. I don't need what seems to be the same game with a crappy paint job :)

I'm really enjoying Final Fantasy IV. I'd say go for that one.

Having played DQ IV, FF IV, TWEWY, and currently working on DQ V, I'd say either DQ V or TWEWY. DQ V is an awesome traditional RPG, TWEWY is a unique action game.

And by DQ V is "traditional" means it has turn based combat :). It introduces a lot of cool stuff (like recruiting monsters to fight with you).

Thanks for all of the opinions...I think I'm going with TWEWY. Then again, thanks to Doc's threat, I'd probably be claiming that either way. ;)

I actually have DQ V on the way, but I want to play DQ IV first. I played a few of the original DQ games and I really enjoyed them, even though they are grind-fests.

I have Etrian Odyssey 2 and I didn't enjoy it much. It just felt very...generic.

Anyway, thanks again! I'll have something to do on the way to Atlantic City.

Dragon Quest 5 is the most brilliant JRPG ever made.

Are the Dragon Quest games stand alones? Or would I need to play the others to understand the story?

1-3 and 4-6 are trilogies, but you don't need to play any of the others to "get" them. They're simply related to one another, if that makes any sense.

Glad to hear you went with TWEWY. I poured a ridiculous number of hours into that game, and every time I hear about it I run the risk of jumping back in a bit. I completed the "Eden Set" just before PAX and then picked up a ton of rare ones there. Finally managed to move on after that. :)

I didn't actually get out to get TWEWY before I left, but it is on its way from Goozex now, coincidentally.
