View Full Version : Post your Warhammer/40K armies!

I know a lot of people on the forums here like to assemble, and sometimes even get around to play with their overpriced, yet undeniably awesome Warhammer and Warhammer 40K armies, so I figured why not create a thread devoted to posting pictures and army lists?
Now, right now, I do not have a working camera, so I will just start the thread off with a simple list.
First off, my pride and joy is my Dark Angels strike force, which is composed of one HQ, two simple tactical squads, a predator, a predator annihilator, a rhino, a scout/assault bike squad, and an assault marine squad. The only games that I have played have been small in scale, so I have never brought out the entire group at once, but oh boy, would that be fun. :D
-- The headquarters that I have is a pretty standard command squad: One commander/force commander, a veteran sgt, an apothecary, a standard bearer, and a techmarine.
-- One of my tactical squads has a heavy bolter, and both of the squads have sarges, though one is equipped with a plasma pistol and a chainsword, while the other just has a bolt pistol and chainsword. The assault squad has four members. I originally had a scout marine squad, but those somehow disappeared off of my front porch one day while they were drying from a fresh spray of dark angels green.
-- I normally do not use the vehicles, simply because I have not yet had a large enough battle to make it worth the point cost. They have pretty basic las gun/heavy bolter armaments, while the Rhino only has the twin linked bolter on top of the vehicle. One of my bikes is a standard scout bike, while the other bike is an assault bike with a multi-melta attached to the side.
I will post exact numbers of my Dark Angels group once I've taken the time to look through them all, because they are all in a box and I do not feel like tearing that open and setting them all up just yet.
Besides my Space Marines Dark Angels force, I also have a smattering of Eldar warriors as well. These guys are used as a punching bag of sorts for my Space Marines, and includes a half strength guardian defender squad, a half strength Dire Avenger squad with an exarch, and a farseer. I recently sold my Prism Cannon on ebay, but that was intended as my heavy support when I thought I would want an Eldar army. I also sold a few swooping hawks and striking scorpions, but I never had enough to really constitute even half of a squad for either of the two kinds of warriors.
About a month and a half ago I bought a platoon of imperial guardsmen. I didn't finish painting them, only assembling them. I use them when I am playing with the Stargrunt II ruleset (which I thank J_Arcane for showing me, before he was run off IRC). Truth be told, I do not like the Warhammer 40K ruleset because of how much luck is involved in the game, but anyways, have fun with it, whichever ruleset you use.

I'm in the process of rebuilding my Space Wolves army, awaiting the new codex. But off my head I had;
Ragnar Blackmane
Logan Grimnar
Ulric
About 50-60 Bloodclaws with bolt pistol and chainsword. Mixed power weapons and heavy weapons in there, but they acted as my main attack squads. When a squad of 15 runs in and can get about 45 attacks? Holy cockballs, batman. That'd make some genestealers blush.
Then I had about 100 Grey Hunters, basically vet Blood claws. They mostly had bolters, bolter/chainsword and heavy weapon varieties. I didn't like using them as much, but since I had played generic space marines before, they were easy to convert into Grey Hunters.
A single Long Fangs pack, about 6 models. The devistators, heavy weapons and the sexyness that ensues.
About 10 Wolf Guard terminators, one had an assault cannon, most were storm bolter/chainsword or power fist. Great hammer/protection for the lord.
Just got more from the Black Reach box, including more termies and a dread, so those will be added eventually

My armies were cast aside many, many years ago. I slowly lost pieces through a multitude of moves until I gave up on trying to keep them. I'd love to play again someday, but don't really see it happening.
I'd love to see some other peoples' armies though.

My Ork army would need to be rebuilt from scratch for the new codex/rules, and I've never bothered doing so. I played with a bunch of foot-slogging lists, but never found one that I ever won a single game with. They're gathering dust in a corner now.. :(
I've been wanting to get into this sort of gaming. How much does it cost?

My friend and I have about 2500 points each of Black Templars (him) and Thousand Sons (me), all done in cardstock using custom paper mini templates designed myself.
Total cost to us was probably around $10.

That's cheating! :p
I don't play anymore, but I used to get Space Marines, T'au and Necrons. My first-ever purchase was a box of Dark Eldar core troops, though. I was lucky enough to get a friend into it at the time, since a lot of the players in Games Workshop smelled so bad I didn't want to play there.

This thread is failing to deliver in a horrible way! Sadly I haven't had any W40K stuff in years, so I too contribute to the fail.

I have a Lizardman army and a Dwarf Army for WHFB
I also have Amazons, Norse, Pro-Elf, Chaos, Skaven, Human, Orc, Lizardman, and Dwarfs for Blood Bowl.
Almost forgot my Amazons for Mordheim and my Dwarf Man O' War fleet.

I've been wanting to get into this sort of gaming. How much does it cost?Unless you find a really good deal on eBay...it can get really, really expensive really, really fast. Of course, a lot of it depends on how you're playing. The traditional army vs. army setup can be expensive, but you can do some squad level stuff relatively cheaply.

My Fiance and I have quite a bit of Fantasy, and I will post some pics later when I get home from work. I play Wood Elves and high elves, and he has Dwarves and Lizardmen as his main focus.
We actually gave up on warhammer moreso in favor of Privateer press's Warmachine/Hordes. I have circle of Orboros and he has Everblight. Though...he is really sensitive about his painting.

I'll try and dig out my camera and some armies over the weekend.
My son and a friend were going through the game closet looking for some of my old school Eldar. It seemed like every box they pulled out said "Black Orcs" on it. I went on a buying spree when they discontinued the old plastic Black Orcs and they went on sale. One box that they pulled out of the closet said "Even More Black Orks!" :D
I'll try to post some pictures soon.

Frankly, the game's not completely terrible, but it's not worth the insane amount of money and time required to buy a proper army. I have a lot more fun knowing I spent $10 on my minis, than I would if I knew I'd spend $300+, you know?
And I hear you about the smell. There's a hobby shop in the city that does a Warhammer day, and a friend and I went once to check it out and left after like 10 minutes because it was, quite simply, the worst stench I have ever experienced. I could fucking taste it it was so bad, and it didn't go away for hours afterward. I think I actually took a shower and Listerine'd my mouth just to clean the smell off.

The Kill Team rules in the 4e book are actually pretty cool, though I've yet to playtest them.

I would think it'd be nice to have at least some models, since most of them look great and it's very rewarding to paint them yourself and think of a neat color scheme. Also, it helps build the character of the units, which, with the universe's already hugely entertaining backstory, makes the game more fun and interesting.

Yeah, my girl and I are both Warmachine and Hordes people too. I'm a Khador/Circle player and she's a Cryx/Trollblood fan. The flow and look of 40k never really grabbed me, but I can still appreciate the game.
I'll have to get a few pics of my WM stuff up here for variety. :)

Man I used to love playing this game. Dont have the time anymore, but back in the day it was an absolute blast. I went to a Gamesday in Baltimore a few years back as well, too much fun. I used to play Dark Angels for 40K, and Wood Elves for Fantasy. My armies got ebay'ed a long time ago, except for my hand-painted Wood Elf dragon that took me about a week. That one's a keeper.

I have a couple armies for a few different games:
Warhammer 40k: Eldar, all the way baby! I loves me some Space Elves. I haven;t gotten anything besides the new Codex in a while, thouh. Ever since my local gaming store closed down (The War Room) I haven;t gotten much play time.
Warhammer Fantasy: The rarely used Lizardmen. I love my Lizzies, but there aren;t that many Fantasy players around
Warmachine: Cryx. I'm an evil bastard, and so is my army. I haven;t played this in a while either, but I should get a couple games in over the next few weeks.
Hordes: I have a small Skorne army, but I think I might sell it. I can't remember the last time I actually used it.
Starship Troopers: I got a ton of figs for really, really cheap at this year's Dragoncon. The rules look really interesting, but I haven;t had a chance ot assemble all the figs yet (I have a Mobile Infantry army)
If I remember, I'll try to get some pictures tonight.

My brother brought assault on black reach beacuse he nabed it for half price. So we've just been messing about with that... i've dug out my tau army i never really used from years ago it's just a pain in the ass to be missing things and not having the full updated rules and the new codex and so on. But i may pick those up if i can score them in a sale or on the cheap and try and pick up a fuller army too just 'cus i miss painting them.
At the moment i've got a HQ of a commander and 2 body guards in the battle suits
2x6 teams of fire warriors one using a devilfish
1x12 kroot
and some drones.
Should be enough to equal out points with the SM army that came with my brothers box once i short out all my war gear and the like... i'm not a huge fan of the paintjob i did on them... in fact i think i may have some photos on a photobucket or some such.

I wish I knew where my Space Marine army was...it got lost the last time I moved house.
It wasn't big, but it was a pretty solid all round team.
I had:
1 Dreadnought
1 Rhino
3 Tactical Squads
1 Land Speeder
1 Predator
And Marneus Calgar, although I don't think my army was technically big enough to field him.
...and now I want it back.

He doesn't happen to play orks, does he? I'm trying to trade the ork half of Black Reach for the Space Marine half.

nope he won't want to trade, his enjoying painting the things more than anything else. He lives down south so i don't see him often... which is why i'm going to see about updating my army and getting my friend to drag his orks out heh

My 2500pt Lamenter Space Marine Army. I'm adding to this army all the time. I'm currently painting a vindicator for the end of this month. Funnily enough I don't actually play many games!

Your army looks very nice and cohesive.
Man I wish I liked 40K, and had the $800 to make a nice army. Having 2 armies for Fantasy that rarely see play keeps me from investing in another system.

Well my tau just got crushed in to the ground in there first outing almost purely beacuse i made some mistakes with my army list. I just didn't know just how much firepower i'd need for the Dreadnought... the 2 seekers i had went up with the transport... first shot of the first turn. With only a few plasma and one fusion blaster and some missiles that could hurt the damned thing at all in my crisis team. I did have one small chance of putting the thing down, i managed to get behind him with the crisis team, he could just about get in to assault with the dread. Which was annoying but it was over difficult terrain. If he'd fallen short my crisis team would have hit in from the front and my fireing line would have been able to hit him in the back. Sadly he got in to combat... from which my commanders crisis team could do no damage (or escape apparently) and would even fall off the table or been killed if they filed a leadership check... which strikes me as a bit odd as it was simply a matter of turns until they died and there was nothing i could do about it.
But with the crisis team tied up and not being alowed to shot at the dready while it was in that combat i was screwed. His tack team was coming in to play from its hiding place and his terminators had reached my fireing line. There wasn't much i could do. Highlight was my kroot charging the terminators, taking one down in there first hail of bullets, on 3 of the 12 left standing to assault all of whom died in the first found of combat. They gave there lives for the grater good, keeping the terminators tied up and in my firing line longer so i could knock another 2 off before they reached me
but i'm demanding a rematch with hopefully a much better army list for the task... i don't expect to win, i don't know the ins and outs of the tau at all at the moment but i should do better. With the new core rules and a new codex and it being years since i brought the tau have all made me lose what little knowledge i had
Hotcod
01-02-2009, 02:29 PM
So we had a rematch and i got stomped again but this time it took 6 turns and i did hurt him a lot. My commander brought it in the first turn, taking the melter from the dready in the hopes of the invulnerable save. Couldn't lose the other 2 which where tooled up in fusion blasters. Still it was for the grater good as his bodyguards where so enraged that they blasted the dreadnaughts melter off. Hit and run from then until it went down and they started to take on the termines. Simply couldn't wittle them down enough before they got to my lines and i was left with no choice to assault them with fire warriors... not a good thing to do.... His tactical squad held up in cover, not doing much damage but hard to weed out to do damage to with the T's on my other flank.
I think what went wrong was the 2 seekers missiles didn't do any damage to the dreadnought and the loss of my commander. All that happened in the first turn and left me with out enough anit armour fire-power to takes the termines down quickly. I think i need a hammer head or broad side with a rail gun really.
Also the rules are a headache, if i'm not mistaken tau is still in 4th edition and we've been playing 5th so there's problems there that hare confusing enough for players who know what there doing. We also keep missing things... that would have likely helped me win in some cases but ho hum
Hotcod

right, 3rd post, i know i know no on cares but i need to rant about this a little. So i realised that tau are still in 4th edition codex while the rules are on 5th. the 5th edition rules brake a hell of a lot of tau tactics as they where and mess up a few key rules. One of the taus most useful wargear (and the reason to bother using shadowsun) now deals with a rule that NO LONGER EXISTS and GW have yet to put out an offical faq on the matter.
The official faq fixes minor problems and brings up it's own boat load of confusion. Now i know people who say play dark eldar have a codex based on 2nd edition rules and they should get a new codex as quickly as they can but it's stupid that the army list and ideas i had for building up my army are now down the crapper and given that i don't want to invest in to models i won't use i can't really buy anything tau based until the rules are fixed or we pitch up with a new codex.
Given that a new codex isn't likely until '10 i'm not sure what i should be doing. Playing with brother has been a blast and i'm sure i can convince at lest one friend to play the odd game. Since actually using my tau after all these years was nice and i like the underlying ideas i want to carry on with them but it's not a hobbie i'm willing to dumb a whole load of cash in to... a bit here or there for the odd game and enjoying the painting is fine but with out some idea of some kind of army list i'd like to use with the tau i can't make the more interesting choices about my army.
I was looking froward to trying an army with a fireing line to fire warriors and broad sides backed up by some kroot and gune drones with shadowsun hanging about the back... maybe with a hammer head... but with crysis suits at the flanks running intercept of assault units along with some hit and run tactics with maybe some pathfinders and stealth suits proving flanking and markerlights. Full on army is that but one that can't really work the way i was thinking it would with out knowing how the faq comes down.
I'm frankly tempted to pitch up with a box set and codex of something new that is already got a 5th edition make over.

Me and my brother still play sometimes Hotcod, but we still use 4th edition rules and I think and 3rd edition codex for my brother Tau. It is not worth the money to me to by the new rulebook since we play so seldom and then have the rules change to make a model obsolete that doesn't fit in with the way the game works anymore.
They move way to quickly on the rule changes, especially since they don't even get codexes out for a lot of armies before re-releasing rulebooks and starting the codex cycle over again. Like you said Dark Eldar have not been updated for many years and editions.
Plus plastic figures costing more then the old pewter figures kinda bugs me. Like when they updated the Tyrnaid monstrous creatures making them plastic then raising the price.
Hotcod
01-04-2009, 04:42 PM
Ya, it's all the product of the fact GW needs to make money. New rules new codex and new units are there core of that but the update to current model system is also part of it. I mean we do get by far cooler and more individual models making your army more unique but you do pay a premium for them and even in the time the tau have been out there's been updates to some of the basic models.
Simple but sad fact is that more complex cooler looking models need more expensive moulds and are harder to design... and people expect the models to get better and cooler over time... so your stuck between a rock and a hard place. Still we are not likely to see another major jump in price for a while since the last jump was due to a whole new moulding set up.
But i think i've settled on building an eldar army up. I'm also going slightly more for cool/fluffy than min maxing it... since i don't play that often painting and collecting cool stuff i like will be important. That and my little brother brought the codex beacuse he likes the fluff (won't play) means i've saved some moneys there heh
