So, in a fit of nostalgia I've been replaying Starflight 1 and 2, and I got wondering - What games are like Starflight? As in, have a similar explorative gameplay style?

So far, I've come up with:

Star Control 2 - in many ways, this game is such a nod to the SF series it's mind-boggling.
Star Control 3 - to a lesser extent, and not without many flaws, but there's still a similar aspect.

And here's where I pause and go, there HAVE to be more, because after these, the next two I come up with are:

Mass Effect - again, not without flaws (lackluster ground graphics), but it is there.
Spore - the biggest fault on this one is the fact that you're always being forced to run around and help allies/yourself.

There's got to be more, isn't there?

Edit:
I found the Starflight:The Lost Colony Project in Beta at: http://starflightgame.com/wordpress/

Have you ever tried Hardwar (http://www.strategyinformer.com/pc/hardwar/)?

I remember playing a bunch of that when I was younger.

I used to love Starflight on the Genesis...that beta you linked to looks interesting :)

It'll be neater once it's final. The project has only released Beta 1, and then the guy went GPL 3.0 Open Source, and moved it to Google Source for code finishing. The current beta is playable as a taste, but gets frustrating due to bugs.

Star Control 2 is the pinnacle of this genre, IMO.

I don't know if I've ever played StarFlight...

But you could always try LightSpeed or Hyperspeed. They are OOOOOLLLDDD games though, so a forewarning on POLYGON JAGGY HELL graphics. =)

Dude, I'm replaying STARFLIGHT. These are games for which your video choices are EGA or Tandy if you're lucky.

Although, there's an Amiga Emulator version of it available on http://starflt.com, which looks like the Mac version I fondly remember from 15+ years ago, with slightly better graphics.

I basically gave up on my Starflight 2 playthrough for now - I got too damn irritated with fighting the G'Krunk. The emulator's performance was inconsistent enough that the running long-range missile battle you have to get into with them is nigh-impossible.

(They've got *way* better equipment than you can even buy, *and* they have shield nullifiers. Missile battle is your only chance to not die.)

Went to play SC2 (and maybe I'll take a stab at SC3 again, I kind of liked it, honestly) and then I'll take another run at SF2 in Dosbox instead.

Never played starflight so I don't know how close/far it is from it but I liked this:
http://neurohack.com/transcendence/

quite a bit, as far as space/exploration goes, reminds me of solar winds 1/2 back in my dos days.

Every time I try SC2, I get ganked the second I leave Earth by some wierd crystal guys, who chase me half way across the galaxy before smoking my ass every time.

Plus, I liked the 3d starmap strategy thingie better.

Starflight was awesome as hell though.

I couldn't get into Transcendance.

And J Arcane - hint for those crystal guys is to use your Spathi friend. The missiles he fires allows you to wear them down slowly.
