This week on the Johnny Gigawatt and the Tiger Men from Mars (http://johnnygigawatt.com/) comic podcast: why 'Fun' is the most feared word in comics, Mark Waid's return to the world of superheroes, and the return of Comics Cinema Cavalcade!

A lot of team books this week. In fact the only solo books I'm grabbing are Spidey and Invincible.

DC
Justice League Of America #30
Outsiders #15
Trinity #38

Marvel
Amazing Spider-Man #587
Dark Avengers #2
Guardians Of The Galaxy #10
Uncanny X-Men #506
X-Factor #40
X-Men Legacy #221

Indie
Invincible #59
Shrapnel #2

Picks of the Week

Outsiders #15 - This is, what, the third or fourth revamp/relaunch of this book in the last 2 years? That said, with one of my current favorite writers - Peter Tomasi - at the helm I'll give this version of the Outsiders a shot. But it really needs to wow me right off the bat, a job last week's Outsiders special didn't accomplish.

Dark Avengers #2 - The first issue was just one of the most deliciously fun comics of the last few months. It's a book about a group of lunatics and psychopaths, but you can't take your eyes off of them. Norman Osborne has blossomed into one of the most interesting characters in comics, and his new role as the Iron Patriot is just the tip of the iceberg.
X-Factor #40 - The ending of last issue was, to say the least, shocking. Writer Peter David promises that the end to this issue will be equally as surprising, and potentially has hard to deal with. The book seems to be returning to it's darker early days after spending a lot of time recently in crossover land. And there are few writers out there who do dark as well as Peter David.

Question of the Week - The solicitations for May are out, including offerings from Marvel (http://www.newsarama.com/comics/090217-may-2009-marvel-solicitations.html), DC (http://www.newsarama.com/comics/090217-may-2009-dc-solicitations.html) & Dark Horse (http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=19875). So, What looks hot, what looks bad, and what covers jump out at you?

Brave and the Bold looks to be my only pickup this week.

QotW: Booster Gold shooting a gun with the Soviet flag as backdrop brings a smile
HOLY CRAP! Power Girl! Interesting to see Secret Six getting in on the Batman bandwagon, dunno how that would pan out.
What the hell? A StarCraft comic? ... And isn't Final Crisis supposed to be over? Why are there wrapup stuff coming out in MAY?
There is alot of videogame related comics coming out, not that any of them seem all that appealing to me.
Hooray for more of the Marvel Noir stuff, they're pretty good stuff, and glad to see more series starting up.
Ugh at the Spider-Man: The Short Halloween. Haha, trying to play off of the Batman series, but Bill Hader and Seth Meyers doesn't make me want to get anywhere near that book. Didn't know about a Marvel Zombies 4, I think at this point it might be played out too much. And a Thor 602? I thought 600 was just a one-time thing? But a Thor by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby should be fun. Hooray for Kick-Ass!

This was a stream of consciousness post brought to you be Question of the Week.

Pulls:
Dark Avengers #2
Dynamo 5 #0
Invincible #59
Robin #183
Supergirl #38

QOTW:
Dardevil Noir looks cool. So does Dark Reign: Young Avengers. Power Girl #1 also looks great. There doesn't seem to be a Green Lantern book in may. Oh, the Fables Corssover is looking mighty fun.

Does anyone know of a good indie comic shop in the twin cities or a decent place to order from? I found an awesome place in Cali and spent something like $200 when I went in there but I can't find anything decent up here.

QOTW:

Lockjaw and the Pet Avengers could be funny, or it could be aweful. My current bet's on awful. I really want Ultimatum to be good, and Ultimate Spidey probably will be. I like Bill Hader and Seth Meyers, so there's a chance for The Short Halloween, but it's slim. Being that I only read trades I haven't read any of the post Secret Invasion Avengers titles, but given the track record over the last few years, it's probably a safe bet that I'll like those. Agents of Atlas always gets a look from me. The new She-Hulk looks bad, if only for the "cat fight" reference in the solicit.

On the DC side, The Battle For The Cowl stuff could go either way. I haven't been crazy about what I've read of R.I.P, so hopefully it's an improvement. Booster Gold always has promise. I'm torn on Flash: Rebirth. On the one hand I've never seen what's so great about Barry Allen, but on the other hand Johns does pretty good work with updating characters. Based on the two most recent trades of JLA, the series has taken a sharp downward turn after Metler's run and this doesn't sound any better. Secret Six looks fantastic.

As for what I've been reading:

Incredible Hercules vol. 1: I don't feel like it's quite as good as everyone seems to think, but it's still quite good. They do really good work in fleshing Hercules into a character that's not a few catchphrases.

Criminal vol. 1 & 2: Simply fantastic crime fiction. Like most crime stories you can see the ending coming a mile away but you can't pull away because you're hoping they can avoid the inevitable. Really great stuff.

Justice League of America: The Injustice League and Sanctuary: After Metzler's pretty good to great run, these were a pretty big let down. It's paint by numbers super team fiction that runs really familiar roads. The super villains are teaming up? Again? Meh.

Umbrella Academy vol. 1: I feel like this is in the vein of Nextwave, though a bit better. There's an awful lot of stuff in here that seems like it was added "because it's awesome!" I'm thinking of Spaceboy's monkey suit here, but there were others. Stuff like that usually falls flat with me, and it did here too. Fortunately, there's a nice enough story to go along with it, which is more than Nextwave had going for it, and the art is nice, so I ended up liking it but still thinking it's a bit overrated. It certainly passed it's biggest hurdle though, and that's getting me to not roll my eyes at a comic written by a guy from My Chemical Romance, so good job there!

Incredible Herc, like most good comedies, needed time to get its stride. By Secret Invasion it was rocking cocks. Behold, the greatest panel of 2008 (http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh78/ColonelGreen/scan0028-1.jpg).

And Ragdoll wanting to be the Boy Wonder is the most hilarious and terrifying thing ever, god I love Gail Simone.

Guardians of the Galaxy was particularly fun this week. Pick it up!

I've seen you post that panel before Savok, but I guess I either don't get the context or just don't get it period. I mean, he's giving the thumbs up. Ok? Still, I liked what I saw in the first trade enough that I want to see where it goes. Amadeus and Herc make a great duo.

And yes, Ragdoll trying to be the Boy Wonder sounds hilarious.

And yes, Ragdoll trying to be the Boy Wonder sounds hilarious.Cho spends that whole issue, and pretty much that whole arc, trying to Get Some with various Amazon chicks. That top panel is Herc giving his little buddy the Stifler-like "go for it, man!" when he appears to be closing the deal.

Oh, ok, that helps tremendously Doc. Much funnier now. Don't know that I'd go as far as calling it the best panel of '08 (though I have no idea what I'd choose for that title), but I'm no longer confused as to why Savok keeps posting it.

Is anyone interested in the trade for the Revelations (http://www.amazon.com/Revelations-Paul-Jenkins/dp/1593072392/) mini-series by Paul Jenkins and Humberto Ramos? I tried to sell my copy on ebay (along with pretty much everything else I own) and twice it didn't sell. I would be willing to send it to someone for just $4 (the price of shipping and the envelope) if anyone wants it.

Otherwise I might just end up throwing it away because I'm trying to get rid of most of my stuff. Send me a PM if you want it.

Do not get the Secret Invasion TPB. get this one when it comes out. I thought it wouldn't be funny because the intrawebs had spoiled it. I was dead wrong. I hope the rest of the series is similar to this arc, but that was in fact the best panel of 2008.

MosBen

Wait, do you mean that I shouldn't get the Secret Invasion series trade or the Herc Secret Invasion trade? I was actually probably going to get both eventually.

muddi900
02-18-2009, 03:23 PM
I meant the Herc one, but you should avoid both. I am a Bendis fan, but Secret invasion is not defend able. The only good thing to come out of it was Captain Britain and MI13. Great book.

And take the bit about the best panel of 2008 back. That title surely goes to Atlas getting punched in the dick by Namora! *asks savok for pics*

It's so awesome, my brain automatically plays "punch'em in the dick".

I totally forgot that Spider-Man Noir #3 came out today as well, so that was a pleasant surprise.

Atlantean nutshot (http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh78/ColonelGreen/IH4.jpg).

When Amandus is first captured by amazons Herc's actually pleased because he knows the amazons use prisoners as breeding stock before killing them. That panel up there? That's all pride.

And I would say the God Squad Herc led in Secret Invasion was also pretty awesome. The shit Snowbird pulled alone is worth the price of entry.
