Win 95, I suspect. That's the only explanation for the excitement in the OP.

If this isn't a snarky comment about going from Vista to XP, then I'm losing my internet sarcasm instincts! That's a grim thought.

I'm very tempted to make a thread saying I just bought a DVD player.
If this particular thread was in the lounge then I would have already acted.

I upgraded some hardware today too, and I'm wonderin' if anyone can explain how they get all that music outta those big ol' records and into those tiny little 8-tracks.

I agree with BrassGecko. It's a dig at Vista.
I agree with BrassGecko. It's a dig at Vista.
Indeed.
I consider(ed) myself a fan of Vista. Had been using it since it launched in 2007. But lately, a bunch of bullshit has been happening but there were two main things:
1. Disappearing user account: Vista somehow loses track of your user account and instead loads up a 'temporary desktop.' All of my files were still intact but I couldn't get Vista to recognize my account. A temporary fix was to run in the command prompt: gpupdate/force which updates "global policy." This fix stopped working after a few power cycles (for reasons above me). I had to create a new user account. Ended up losing some documents in the process. This happened three times.
2. Programs failing to initialize: Every non-Windows program/service would not work. Period. Tried plenty of online workarounds, no go.

I've been using Vista since Sept. and it's been working just fine for me. There are a couple annoying things here and there but most of that is attributed to lame 64-bit software support. Take, for example, Quicktime. Apple is very aware that in 64-bit operating systems their progress bar does not who up in embedded videos. Have they fixed it? No, will they? I would assume so but it appears low on the priority scale.
My point being, I haven't run into any of the problems you have with the OS itself. I'm tempted to install XP just to see how it runs but I'm lazy and I figure that if it's working, why bother?
I have not used any Mac for Windows software (iTunes, Quicktime specifically) for like 2 years now :p

You're probably better off for it. Do you use anything specifically for embedded videos? I watch a lot of online videos and the fact that this does not function properly is annoying. I think the only thing I would have to worry about are .MOV files specifically.

I'm sure a tech-savy Vista lover will enter the thread with a pithy remark about its ease of use for them, in their working environment and the way it should be fixed.
I'll stick with XP and see if Windows 7 is worth upgrading too, or not. Just like I did for Vista.

I use VLC for playing video (no worries about codecs) and Winamp for my audio library

I have used VLC and I do like it but I find it crashes more frequently than I would like. Not just on my Vista machine but on my XP machine as well. Have you run into this?

I "upgraded" to XP from Vista a few months ago. It wasn't actually a problem with Vista -- I'm quite okay with it, because I get the handy Vista features and can make it look just like my baby, WinXP, but the image of a Vista install the school was dumping onto our hard drives was so terrible and full of corrupted files and bloat (forty gigs of programs I'd never use) that it just wasn't worth it. It was so messed up the print spooler caused BSOD twice.
The XP image they give us is fine and fifty gigs smaller than the Vista image. But I did have to spend five hours installing the few programs I do use.

I'm going to completely skip Vista and move straight to Windows 7 when it's stable.
So what is the TS gonna do when XP has a problem? Upgrade to 98?
Every OS requires the occasional reinstall. I've done it numerous times with XP and Ubuntu so why should Vista be any different? I have yet to have any problems with Vista BUT when I do I'm not going to switch back to XP seeing as I had problems with XP also.

In my experience Vista seems to "degrade" much quicker than previous iterations. my vista install seems to have another issue crop up every few weeks.
-First issue I had and still have is an issue when I log in from suspend or from another account that was logged in where my icons are all screwy until I manually refresh the screen.
Now its gotten to the point that it takes my mouse 3-4 minutes to respond out of sleep, my 2 DVD/CD writers seem to disappear and not work at random times and combination's and a whole host of other minor annoyances. I just haven't felt like reinstalling everything. So annoying.
Hopefully my x64 Vista of my new laptop fairs better.

Don't put your computer to sleep.

Why would you let your school touch your computer in the first place? My school uses MSDNAA so we get legit versions (burnable image) with keys

I haven't read the full thread, but when I saw this post, I just KNOW that eventually there'll be a Linux/Unix user writing something about how his server has been running for years without a reboot, much less a re-install. :p
Now off to read the rest of the thread...
EDIT: Er... guess not.
Running Windows 7 beta, and my previous OS was XP. I was getting tired of the XP rot bogging down my system that I decided to give W7 a shot to see if it'd be any better. I'm planning to just skip Vista altogether -- it's just not worth it.

Not particularly, no
You could try media player classic + a solid codec pack (check google, I don't know much about codecs)

Hey now, I have some Windows 2000 servers running at work here and they've been running without issues since...well, longer than I've been here, which is 5+ years.
On a side note, our Bugzilla server running Red Hat 5 has also been going for a very long time...it's a bit of a race between the 2 systems at the moment :)

The school requires that we have laptops with certain specs. To enforce this, they get us the laptops. Technically, we don't have to buy the laptops through the school, but getting laptops to the minimum require specs at the price the school has isn't easy. Plus, if I don't have a school laptop and I'm having trouble getting on the network, or getting software to work, or anything like that, I'm SOL. But if I have the school laptop (and I do), they'll take care of that for me.
But I have this stubborn pride that won't let me get the help they offer.

I'm also sticking with XP until Windows 7 is out and the reviews are in. Hopefully I don't have to wait too long.
Why wait for reviews when you can try it yourself right now (the beta). Make a small partition and bam

I've actually been using it as my primary OS since the beta was released to the public. So far so good.

My current computer is somewhat borked due to a partitioning issue. I'm using an iMac with a Windows partition.
The problem is that I made the Windows partition too small. I also had to do some tweaking/fiddling to get it to work at all, and now I can't undo the partition without wiping the entire computer. I don't want to do this at the moment for various reasons, so I'm stuck with what I've got until I finally build a dedicated gaming rig.
Otherwise I'd be all over the Windows 7 beta.

If you need a PC for general computing I could round something up for you. I have tons of old parts lying around just looking for a home. It wouldn't be anything fantastic, but you could use it for storage or whatever. And I would just give it to you.

Hopefully they don't wait till 2010 to ship the official version. I kinda think they'd have to anyway because AFAIK this Windows 7 beta I'm running on will expire this year, and I'm not sure what they expect us beta users to do... re-install the old OS until the official version is out?
In either case, I like it so far. However, it's not exactly blowing my socks off as it basically does the same things XP but in different ways. I did notice a couple of glitches -- returning from sleep mode sometimes caused problems like a disappearing taskbar, having an empty explorer window, stuff like that... then again I've seen those in XP as well, so it's nothing new. Sure would've been nice to see that fixed, though.

That's a really nice offer. :)
I don't really need a computer just for general computing, I really need one for gaming. My iMac is fine for surfing the web, watching videos, etc., it's only slightly borked because of the aforementioned Windows partition. Once I have a gaming rig I can restore my iMac to being just a Mac, and things will go much smoother with two separate machines.
Still, it'd be cool to have a machine to tinker around with, so if you are really serious, I'd be interested. :)
Edit - I agree BlackPete, I really hope that they release 7 before the end of the year. There's no point in buying Vista at this point, so if I get a new rig before 7 hits I'll probably just run either XP or the beta.

Let me see what I can scrape together. I am always looking for a good place for some of this junk to go. I mean I could sell some of it but eventually I find a use for it. Typically I just give old PCs to friends. I'm starting a new job this week so I am going to be juggling my new relationship and my new job but once I get some free time I will put something together for you. I'll even throw a free copy of Ubuntu in to really throw some icing on the cake.

Hopefully Windows 7 isn't ridiculously overpriced. I saw Vista in the store the other day and was surprised that it was nearly $300! I know there are multiple versions, but wow!

I've never used Ubuntu before, so we'll see how that goes.
