Since we're still at the beginning of the site here, it's as good a time as any to make a decision. Do you guys want birthday threads continued?

The daily birthday thread was the only reason I ever went into the Who's Who forum at EvAv, just to see who was getting older that day.

Down with the haters! (I just want to make sure that there is a thread when my birthday comes up)

Same here, and since I'll be 21 I wanna see how I respond when it comes up.

I can't help but enjoy the threads, then again I turn the big 3-0 on the 31st of this month. I don't think each person needs a thread though, I mean that could end up being too many people in general. But a thread each day to point out the birthdays of folks is not that bad.

I enjoy them, but what about once a week? I mean, people on the same day will get bunched together anyway. How about every 7 days? On Sat or Sun?

I like the birthday threads a lot. They make me feel good because people can be (nearly) individually recognized, even if they are lurkers.

Just like at EvAv: One post per day, all people in that post.

TK, you must. It's the lifeblood of the community.

Can I suggest once a week? When there is one everyday they seem to be overlooked. But once a week keeps interest up enough to bring in more than one or two replies (I know it's not quite the same as having it on your birthday, but you could just think of it as a second birthday!). And it's a bit less of a commitment from you, TK.

I wish the initial post were more informative about alternatives. It's not simply "birthday threads or no": I'll quote myself to explain:
Birthdays are announced at the bottom of the main forum page AND each person's profile has its own discussion section - it works a lot like Facebook's wall. Wouldn't it make more sense to post on those instead of filling up our already rapid-pace off topic section?

I think it's great to wish members a happy birthday, I just think there's a more direct and more effective and better organized place on the site for it that doesn't even fill up PM space. Those profile threads are pretty different from other forums, too, if you ask me! This would be a perfect use for them.

Sending people happy birthday messages on their profile messages is more personal, yet still public - you even get a notification when someone posts! Again, it's like the Facebook Wall.

edit: If you want to think of it another way, everyone already has a birthday thread and it is very easy to get to if you just look and see who's birthday it is.

The lifeblood? Can you please explain? Again, I'm not knockin' wishing people a happy birthday, obviously, but looking back even now at the EvAv birthday threads, most do not have one reply and the ratio gets even greater if you include birthday threads with only one reply, usually from one of the people whose birthday it is.

Once per member makes the sidebar seem so cluttered. Once per day where the thread is closed the next day would be cool though.

Just as a side note, we get a 'PM' from the site on our birthday already. Although it's a little less personal and much more automatic.

Daily would get annoying. A lot of useless clutter for generic sentiments for people who, for the most part, you don't really know. I know I wouldn't want a message unless it actually meant something. If it has to be done, I would say weekly. I would prefer quietly sending PMs to people who are your friends, and maybe occasional posts for site founders / prominent community members.

Well as a counter to this opinion, a lot of us know each other in person and even more of us have cultivated online friendships. It's why many of us see this as a community and not just a bus stop with a newsstand.

Right, I know this. I am just saying that if a daily message is thrown out including all lurkers and accounts that have posted once, then it is meaningless. It is just a big, generic, meaningless mess. I have no problem with people shooting PMs to their friends congratulating them, or occasionally starting up a thread for their friend. So long as it means something and isn't just a daily spam thread.

To be fair, the average height is really short. If you want to avoid short jokes, you have to at least hit 6'.

I'm tall, my wife is short. Once when she was barefoot and I was in my bikerboots, I was giving her a hug before riding off and my belt buckle got caught on the front closure of her bra. A slight height disparity!

I vote for once per day; even though TK missed July 14th of 2008. Not even a Bastille Day announcement! :(
