In an effort at continuing with oblique thread titles, THIS would be amazing. (http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601124&sid=ac9.rZCRCs8Y&refer=home)
Hutter and his colleagues scanned the genomes of 60 potential donors and found one who lacked the CCR5 section. The day after they transfused the donor’s stem cells into the patient, they stopped the antiviral therapy that had suppressed his HIV levels.
“There’s been no rebound of HIV,” Hutter said. “Now, two years after transplantation, we can’t find any HIV in this patient.”
Wow. Just wow.
Considering the HIV infection rate in some African nations is in the 20-30% range, (http://fpc.state.gov/documents/organization/70321.pdf#search=%22AIDS%20infection%20rates%20%2B %202006%20%2B%20Sub-Saharan%20Africa%20%2B%20chart%22) this would be amazing if it could become economical in scale.

I really like to think that we're pretty darn close to a cure for HIV. It's no longer the "hot" disease, so it doesn't get the same spotlight that cancer does these days...but I hope there is still enough funding to eradicate yet another disease.
AIDS and leukemia? Holy fucking fuck. Fuck!
If it's true and repeatable in scale, of course.

Now if we could only do something about the scourge of erectile dysfunction, which seems to hardly get any funding or attention at all compared to silly things like cancer, AIDS, and the like.
/sarcasm.
Maybe we need to frame it differently: erectile dysfunction is cancer of the penis.

How about calling it "Willy AIDS"?

Hopefully an eventual AIDs/HIV cure will be affordable. Unfortunately BigPharm wouldn't like that, so I don't hold much hope.

/sarcasm.I think someone, somewhere, is already printing up T-Shirts and bumper stickers saying "I Beat Erectile Dysfunction."

So this seems to be a pretty risky treatment if it kills 1/3 of all the patients, if I read the article right. And it seems to be pretty specific for leukaemia and HIV but hopefully they get some useful information about how to move forward with more general treatments.

To be fair, if they don't price it so people can get it, they won't make money. It's the poor people who have the disease, for the most part.

Yep, that's what the article seems to say:
After a few more months went by, his leukemia returned and doctors decided to try a stem cell transplant, a risky procedure that kills nearly a third of patients.
Though through enough testing, hopefully they could get that number way down. Even still, if it actually cures 2/3 of the patients, it might be worth a shot if you're living with HIV and expecting to die anyway.

Reminds me of the episode of Family Guy where Peter has a stroke and gets cured by stem cells.
"How long was I in there?"
"About five minutes."
"WHY ARE WE NOT FUNDING THIS?"

Very very good point.
This could be amazing therapy, and as procedural techniques advance the 1/3 rate of death will improve.

Hmm, maybe someone could invent an anti-erection medication? Or America could do the world a favor and airdrop leaflets with pictures of Jocelyn Wildenstein on one side...
