Call of Duty: World at War is perhaps one of the most maligned games of the past year, at least in terms of multiplayer. That doesn't seem to be of great concern to Treyarch or Activision as they ready the release of the first official map pack. Called, imaginatively enough, Map Pack 1, the pack will feature four new multiplayer maps - Nightfire, Station, Knee Deep, and Verrückt - the latter being an expansion to the four player co-op Nazi Zombie mode.

Call of Duty: World at War Map Pack 1 is scheduled for release some time in March 2009 on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Windows PC for an as-yet-unannounced price.

What an uninspired name for a map pack. This will probably be at the $10 price point.
CoD4 just seems so much better than this.

There is no "seems". COD4 is still heads and shoulders above what this game tries to be. I won't even address the single player *shudder*

Complaining about a map pack name? Back in my day the individual maps didn't even have names, just numbers. The maps were only referred to as Q3DM17, and we liked it that way.

"Most maligned games of the past year"? I thought everyone knew this was a Treyarch title and adjusted their expectations accordingly. :)

I can't speak of the single player campaign yet but I think the Multiplayer is a little better than CoD4. More balanced weapons and perks, better levels, drivable tanks and attack dogs are a ton of fun. Of course, YMMV.

I am playing through CoD4 right now on veteran and on the final part of the mission where you have to hold out for the helicopter and save McMillian I had no less than 5 grenade indicators on the screen at some points.....whats the difference in WaW? I have not played WaW, your saying there is even more nade spam?

Q3DM17 actually had a name by the way. The Longest Yard. They all had names. Q3DM17 was the file name.

I really like CoD: WaW.
It surprised the hell out of me.

Verrückt (Zombie Asylum)
* The fan favorite 4-player co-op Nazi Zombies Bonus Mode returns with "Verrückt," a terrifying Zombie asylum featuring more weapons, perks via the addition of Perks-a-Cola machines, electroshock defenses and the endless zombie horde.
Oh hell yes. Sold.

Same here. After hearing all the negativity around here regarding the game, I still gave it a go and really enjoyed myself. Ending up polishing it off in a couple of days on Normal. I may even go through again on Veteran just because.
I've yet to try the multiplayer part, but I may just do that this week to see what it's like. I never gave COD4 multiplayer a try either, so I guess I can't really compare

It worked very much the opposite for me. I only played the first level of COD4 on single player. Other than that, it was all mutli. Whereas with this one, I played through the entire game just to unlock the Nazi Mode and I haven't actually jumped into the multiplayer. Just co-op and Zombies.

Fuck that. I can't imagine spending any more money on that piece of shit game.
Zombie mode is about the most overrated fucking thing ever released.
I'd rather play Left 4 Dead.

The hell? Did that map fall off Bioshock's truck or something?

Man, I always wanted another map for Nazi Zombies, and now that I've kind of lost interest in it, here it is. Maybe if they let me do online plus splitscreen, I'd give it a shot, but until then, no thanks.

WaW sucks, but damn is that screen gorgeous. By the way I'm about to purport that I have Crysis 2 screens somewhere. Not sure where yet but it should be fun.

I'm also one that enjoys WaW. IMO, zombie mode is better than anything L4D tried...but then again, L4D shouldn't be the zombie game we were all hoping for.

So no answer to my question...........?
Yes, it's worse.
I have literally watched a friend sit in one spot behind cover, hitting G continuously for 20 solid minutes.
Imagine every annoying and cheap thing the COD4 single player did on the harder difficulties, now multiply it by 100, and have it do it in every goddamn level on every goddamn difficulty.
So no answer to my question...........?
The worst I've seen is three grenades all landing at my feet. Then again, I usually spawn the enemies then retreat behind cover to hide and they STILL find some way to land them there. That said, I still think it's a lot cheaper than CoD4 was. Even just for the number of enemies that rush you and ignore everyone else...
Sitting behind cover hitting the throwback button for 20 minutes? Pure exaggeration.

No, it isn't.
And it has to do with COD5's love of endless spawns and trigger points.
It's why I hated the fucking game in the end. You have to constantly be rushing forward, stopping behind cover is useless because the enemies will never stop spawning unless you rush forward and hit the next trigger, and they always know where you are.
When a friend and I played co-op, I wound up not even bothering with a gun most of the time, it was more effective to just constantly rush forward stabbing everyone who got in your way.

Haven't all COD's had that though? I recall COD2, COD3 and COD4 (can't recollect, but maybe even COD1) would do that. If you didn't advance to a certain point, they would keep spawning. One of my tactics would be to rush forward to the trigger spot (or where I felt it would be) and then pick off whoever was left.
ps...stabbing works great :)

Yeah, it's a run and gun. COD4 was the same way. Endless monster closets until you passed that point and then the closets further down the way would begin to spawn.
As for the grenades, well...I was pretty much constantly moving so I never ran into that problem. I did, however, run into situations where I would constantly die, but have no idea where I was getting picked off from. That was annoying. The only tactic was to run madly in any direction as soon as I would respawn.

I dunno, COD 4 on veteran never made me want to throw my controller through the TV. Yes, it was difficult, but it wasn't aggravating. COD 5, ugh, grenades up the ass. There's almost no strategy involved, just luck; luck that I can move 10 ft. without laser-guided grenades landing at my feet. Infinite spawning enemies really take the fun out of the game, knowing that no matter how many bullets I use, more guys just keep popping up. It's just not fun, period.
Oh, and on a side note, I have a small beef with the power of the guns in MP too. Historically speaking, the Thompson should be the vastly more potent than the Type 100 or the MP40. Both of those guns shoot 9mm rounds, compared to the Thompson which shoots .45 caliber rounds.
.... Whatever, just give me more zombies !!...

In CoD4, I recall going through the missile silos as being sort of an exercise in luck and grenade avoidance. And yes, the "OMFG HURRY UP AND GET TO THE MAGICAL TRIGGER TO MAKE THE GODAWFUL ENEMIES STOP ENDLESSLY SPAWNING" has been a hallmark of the CoD series since the beginning.
One of my memories of CoD was playing the demo in some store, and playing it how I used to typically play such shooters - I got behind the truck, and started picking off enemies, expecting to whittle them down to the point where we could move forward.
Eventually, I ran out of ammo, and there was still a pile of guys over by the MG nest. WTF?!?
New maps? Nice. But how about doing something about my fucking respawning with someone's gun sticking in my chest?

Ahh, the revenge spawning. This is something that has been my fucking bane since the first game as well.
COD's spawn system will deliberately respawn you almost right on top of whoever just killed you, presumably with the assumption you'll gun them down in revenge. What actually tended to happen IME was that the initial disorientation from the respawn as you try to get your bearings, as well as the fact that the really good players came to expect it, usually just meant every time you died, you could look forward to getting spawn killed three or four times before you finally managed to spawn just far enough away from someone that you could escape said fate.
