View Full Version : The Audacity of Hope Episode

We’re taking a crack at feeling better about things at this link (http://ingamechat.net/audio/IGC20090205.mp3).

The hot demo drops from last Thursday did all that they were expected to do for the show. They alleviated whatever fears may have kept us from at least a couple of the games we’d sworn ahead of time to purchase and to love and to cherish for ever. Killzone’s still a day-one pickup, Halo Wars still looks like the first Halo game with a well-drawn story and, incidentally, we find that it really is possible to love Burnout more with every minor tweak as easily as it is with every major content infusion.

It’s also quite clear that some prayers we hadn’t even bothered to utter have been answered with a clarion call from EA. The Battlefield franchise in 2009 is active in more ways than we (err, I) could have hoped to see. With Heroes in late spring, 1943 in the summer and the Bad Company sequel near the end of the year, there should be scads and oodles of BF’s brand of combat to be found across all platforms. The one dark cloud in the sky - for PC diehards, at least - is the lack of any word about a proper Battlefield 3. All we can think is that strong support for the lineup of today may well deliver the wish list of tomorrow. One can always hope, right?

Of course, I type this lengthy reply to your last episode and you guys already have a new one out within the hour. Clearly I need to be much more diligent about listening to episodes when they drop. ;)

Well, we recorded this one on Thursday night. You aren't too far behind.

You mean you don't record moments before posting? My world is upside down. :p The podcast scene is getting crazy, man. Crazy awesome, but crazy nevertheless. Between you guys, Rebel FM, the Gamers With Jobs Conference Call, the Giant Bombcast, Geekbox, Brainy Gamer... there's just not enough commuting in the week for all this delicious listening. ;)

Didn't you call into our show back when we were EvAv Radio?

I could have sworn you did. I know you asked a question once cause I remember trying to figure out who to pronounce your username.

Hey guys, loved the little ditty at the end, absolutely hilarious! Enjoyed the Battlefield discussion too.

Rebel FM hasn't really taken off for me just yet but I'll still be listening. Geekbox Radio is good in theory but their rampant spoiling of the most recent episode of various TV shows I watch is getting pretty annoying. I suppose I could just put the podcast on ice for a few weeks but there are some shows like Lost where I'm going to be behind for at least the next few months (waiting for the GF to catch up).

See, if you're like me, you just listen to podcasts while playing Fallout 3, Peggle or WoW. Then you're all set. :)

Oh damn! Great job Strax on that little bit at the end. I was listening to the end and kept thinking...why the hell did he play this as our outro? And then boom!

That was great.

Oh man, that should be the default intro for every episode, that was great.

One thing for James.

It's pronounced "wik-E", not "we-key".

James, it's actually possible to play an entire Skirmish (the free-play type option) as the Covenant. When you go to start the mode, below the settings like 1v1, map selection, etc., there's a leader select option at the bottom of the screen. Go down there and you can choose to swap from Cpt. Whatshisface to the Prophet of Regret, and you can set the CPU as either UNSC or Covenant, as well.

I played a couple of games as Covenant, and I really liked them. They seemed markedly different from the UNSC. Plus--scarabs.

What if you roll the voice identification in with the Show Opening? It would take a while to get into a groove with the new text, but it may help.

"Welcome to In-Game Chat for &DATE&, the Official podcast of colonyofgamers.com. I'm Scott, Psykoboy2 on the fourms and with us today in the studio." Then everyone can introduce themselves, and their COG login. That way, even new people get to forge a connection with a person's name/login/voice.

BTW: Sorry, it's 'wik-E'. The sooner you accept it and move on, the better adjusted you will be. :)

What in the name of all hell would I do if that happened?

He's right. There's a career to be built off of that you know.

I am also excited about the barrage of Battlefield goodness coming down the pipe - I loved BF1942 and BF2, and the Battlefield Heroes beta, while a very different type of game, was a lot of fun as well.

Kind of serendipitously, I had just downloaded the BF Bad Company demo on XBL within the last week and given it a whirl, and I agree with James that it's a ton of fun. I'd much rather be playing that game with a mouse and keyboard, though, so to hear that all that goodness will be showing up on the PC is very heartening. The engine behind Bad Company is extremely good, so a 1942 remake with that tech should be just awesome.

In truth, I was attempting to replace "the better off you'd be" with something that did not sound as much as a personal threat that someone would be by later to break your legs if you didn't comply.

Sadly, I failed. :|

I bursted out laughing in the office at work today when I heard the outro. My coworkers now think that I am insane.

On the subject of Battlefield, I also love the series. Especially BF Vietnam and Bad Company. For me, it's probably all about sound. It blew my mind when I first stepped into a chopper and turned on the 'radio'. It was even better when you had someone who could really fly (low and fast, while you're sitting at the MG). It's like you're really there.

Bad Company has the most vicious and brutal and thus probably the most realistic weapon sounds I've heard in any shooter and I absolutely adore the game for it. Not that the game is brilliant in itself but the weapon sounds put it over the top for me.

Can't wait until March when ship mods and T3 will be introduced in Eve.

I CAN'T WAIT!

Oh, and there were plans of implementing accessible stations (with actual human avatars)? What happened with them?

Also, just think "tiki wiki", easy to pronounce. ;)

I also thought Jeremy was laughing at James during the show for his pronunciation of the word, but since that's how you talk down there, I guess it wasn't, heh.

Hey, look man. I not only pronounce the word correctly, but I've been fighting a losing battle to get Scott to use it correctly. He keeps referring to something "having a wiki (http://wiki.winehq.org/)", when he's talking about a wikipedia entry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wine). He knows the difference, he just doesn't care - or think it actually matters.

I'm glad everyone enjoyed that. :D

I'd have to say, I just don't care. Although, James explains himself in the next episode.

Let's swap 'wiki' with Pokemon, and see what happens.

Now James is the guy who keeps saying 'Poke-E-Man', and you think Pokemon is the name of the yellow lightening rat. :)
