Hey all.
My Philips HDTV is making a strange noise, like distorted static after a few hours of being on.
I'm watching DVDs on my 360, and all of a sudden the audio becomes screechy and static-filled. If I turn the television off and then on again, it's fine.
I just bought the television on Friday. So, two days ago. I got the extended warranty, so I'm not too bothered by the problem, especially if it's a setup thing.
What could the problem be?

Weird. Sounds like a hardware problem to me. Can you just get a swap from the place where you purchased it?

Possibly. Repair option is more likely, as it was sold as a clearance item. :/
I've been told it could be a voltage problem, as I've got the thing plugged into a Mumm-Ra aged surge protector.
Put it on a different Belkin protector...we'll see how it works.

Does this happen on any other external sources to the HDTV (cable box, etc.?) Does this happen if you put the 360 into another input?
It does sound like a hardware problem, but I'd check to make sure your connections are all tight and you haven't done something like draped a cable over a subwoofer or something that can cause a lot of magnetic interference.

I don't have cable yet. And, no, if I change audio inputs it stops. But then hours later will happen again on the new inputs. :/
Could it be the surge protector? Or is that wishful thinking?
It doesn't happen on the Wii, or my PS2, which both aren't HDMI.

If you're saying this happens after a certain amount of time and you're only using HDMI, then there may be a problem with the TV's HDMI board getting hot and the TV would need to be serviced/replaced.
If the 360 is going directly into the TV via HDMI, one thing you can try is turning off any digital audio output the 360 is trying to do since it's likely the TV won't be able to do anything with it..maybe that may help. Only other thing I cant think of is to try your 360 on a different TV with HDMl and see if the problem occurs, but it sounds like a TV problem.

The former assertion is the likely one, I think.

Does the noise increase over time, or does it just happen and stay at a constant level?
Also, if you bought the TV on Friday and it's doing this already, you're due a replacement - not a repair. Don't even mess around with the repair option.

Problem solved. The television is set to Dolby 5.1, and is just using the television speakers, as well as the 360. It's making the same noise it does when you do a THX test and it's out of phase. Changed 360 settings. Fixed problem. Thanx guys! :)

Is the problem actually fixed or just hidden? What you described initially sounds really dodgy and it could be that the problem is still there but just not showing itself because of the settings changes. If you decide to change your setup in the future the problem might come back and it would be that much more difficult to get a repair.

Hmm... I'd be inclined to get a replacement anyway, just in case the problem is still there and it's only being masked.

Well, I'm using the RCAs on the television. It doesn't have native 5.1. It's running a pair of digital stereo speakers internally. So, when the XBox begins using 5.1 (namely when there's odd sound effects in games or specifically in movies, when a sound effect goes into the other non-left right speakers) it begins playing that awful out of phase sound.
Also, the television was set into Retail Store Mode (which enables 5.1, and won't let you change that).
And, finally, I duplicated the roaring static sound with my copy of Planet Terror at a specific part.
It points to settings issues, rather than hardware. But I'm putting in a call to the manufacturer when I get home from work tomorrow. (In case it's a heat sink issue).
