There aren't many great free first-person shooter games out there. Nexon sought to bring a first-person shooter to the gamers for no price at all. Combat Arms is a relatively small game so downloading the game takes almost no time at all. What differs from Combat Arms and games like Counter Strike, Battlefield 2 or Americas Army is the very customizable characters, and guns. You can choose a variety of various helmets, camo suits, vests. For weapons you can choose from a long list primary weapons, secondary weapons, melee weapons, and a few types of grenades. You can also customize your weapons from different scopes, and magazines to better your guns performance and get those initial kills you might not have taken down originally.
I am all about community and getting in touch with friends and clan members to play a game. The interface Combat Arms offers is just that, from the in game messenger to the in game Clan page. I felt well informed and kept up to date with all that was going on with friends. Nexon even set up clan pages, and a ranking system on their website.
There are a few deviating battle modes. Pick your poison so to speak and play for a while, you may enjoy yourself: Elimination which is a Team Deathmatch type of battle. One Man Army a 1vsAll Deathmatch. Search & Destroy a blow it all up bomb mode. Spy Hunt where you have to kill the spy and take the objective. Capture the Flag last but one of my favorite modes, protect your flag and capture the enemy's flag.
My first experience of jumping into a server was not great at all. I'm going to be honest and say that I almost gave this review a really poor grade. The first time I jumped into a server there were a couple hackers running around padding their scores. I promptly exited the game for a while, then later played again. This time no hackers where I was playing. One thing that bothered me is when you actually do good all the other players think you are a hacker. That right there doesn't look good at all. Being kicked out of a game for “hacking” when it was just a lot of luck and skill with first-person shooters. The anti-hacker/cheater system needs to crack down and get an upgrade or maybe even use punk-buster.
The detail on my weapon and clothing were surprisingly well done. My weapon had scratches in the metal which gave it that “Me and my gun have been pwning for a while” kind of feel. It almost feels weird to give props to the character/gun detail and yet the world graphics seems to hinder this game. The explosions from grenades looked something out of Doom with it's very unrealistic fire. If the world graphics were re-done and made to look all shiny, then I could have enjoyed the time playing this game a whole lot more. I have always said that graphics aren't what gives a game how great it is, but when you put awesome detail on guns and barely any detail into the buildings and ground it dulls the game a lot.
All in all I enjoyed playing Combat Arms. For a free game it's worth it to try it out and play around with the many gun types, and be able to customize to your liking. I know I'll be playing it a few more times before I hang this game up.
