We just finished up the latest episode of IGC, and I asked on the show for anyone to get in touch with me who may be getting Burnout Paradise on the PC. I'm really, really interested in hearing how well it runs and looks and anything else about it you can tell me.
Personally, I'm in love with the wide screen mode, as shown here (http://www.criteriongames.com/packs/pc.php).

I almost wish I had 3 screens and the hardware to run it on those screens. Unfortunately, I just have two mis-sized ones that wouldn't make it look so hot.
Wow, they really made me dig down deep on their store to even find the game, it wasn't any of the main banners...
EA Store link (http://eastore.ea.com/DRHM/servlet/ControllerServlet?Action=DisplayProductDetailsPage&SiteID=ea&Locale=en_US&ThemeID=718200&Env=BASE&productID=106479900)
Hmm...$39.99...not a bad price. I already have it on my PS3, but I feel like I might actually play it more on the PC.
Features
An enhanced and improved version of Burnout Paradise.
New vehicles including motorbikes.
New game modes and challenges
All new offline party mode for 2-8 player
Day to night cycle and weather effects
PC Version Specifics
Ultra high resolution graphics
Motion Blur effect
Multiple monitor displays
Soft shadow effects
Head set, USB camera, gamepad and steering wheel support
Full screen Anti-Aliasing
ooo....and steering wheel support...I've always enjoyed a steering wheel attached to a desk as opposed to on my lap while sitting on a couch.

That widescreen did look awesome.
Also in that link they are giving free trials of the game in February. Supposedly with full access to everything and their online play just with a time limit and only 3 cars. I am not much for racing games but I still may give it a try, although with no racing wheel it might not be as fun.
I've never really liked multi monitors though the lines between them really bug me for some reason.

Hmmm. I should see how it runs on the PC. That widescreen looks amazing. I just picked it up recently for the 360 however...
And you know something? It might be my favorite game so far this generation. I was a big hater of the concept, to be honest. It didn't sound "burnouty" enough for me. But it works really well once you get used to it. As well, having the old music in the soundtrack (which I missed, it was very Top Gearish), and the Speed type cars using the old Burnout 1 and 2 style boost system....
It's a wonderful mix of the old, the new and the brand spanking new.

A review courtesy of VideoGamer. (http://www.videogamer.com/pc/burnout_paradise/review.html)
Burnout Paradise on the PC looks great, sporting a great frame rate, superb lighting, incredible car damage, an unrivalled sense of speed and no loading at all once you're in the city - assuming you don't use the restart option, which does result in a fairly brief pause in the action. If you've been hoping your mega PC would run rings around the home console versions of Burnout Paradise, Criterion hasn't let you down. This PC version can be run at ridiculously high resolutions, features improved shadows, ambient occlusion (if your machine is up to it) and performs well on a fairly modest system. The game has lost some of its "wow" factor in the year that's passed, but seeing it run with all the graphical settings maxed is still a rather wonderful thing.
Sounds like a winner.

Well, congrats to them for it. Now I just have to spend a load of money on a rig just to get into the 303 club.

I played a demo on one of the consoles, and I must admit, I enjoyed it. It's great that it's coming out for the PC, but a) I'm not sure if it will run on my computer, and b) it's published by EA, and will therefore (probably) have SecuROM. So, even if my computer could run it, I couldn't play it because I have no Internet on my home computer. That, and I'm not a big fan of a program that burrows it's way into your system registry and resists removal. I guess I'll have to wait and see.
axion
02-04-2009, 10:18 AM
SecuRom usually just does a disc check now I think.
I was going to get it, but after reading reviews I probably won't. Regardless of the drm or how online activated it is (like bioshock, mass effect, etc.) the game itself pretty much requires to be online for login, the shop and everything else. On top of that you can't just start it up and do whatever event type you feel like, you have to find it in the city with the right car at the right time. And apparently even if you find one you want, there's no restart.
axion
02-04-2009, 11:03 AM
Actually they fixed those things in some of the updates. There is now a restart option and I believe they included the ability to pick and choose races from anywhere. Of course the shop requires online... how else would it work? Even on 360 and PS3 I'm pretty sure a lot of the gameplay is online, I could be wrong though.

There is a restart option. Also, you can do any event you want to do with any car you want to do it with. Stunt classified cars are better to do the stunt events with, but you aren't held to that rule. The ONLY events that require specific cars are the time trials.

I have "acquired a pre-release version", and played some last night. It runs great on my q6600 8800gts at 1920x1200 with 4x aa as long as I don't turn on SSAO (fancy lighting), capped at 60 and rarely drops below. I havn't tried any online for obvious reasons, it requires an EA Online account to use the online features but singleplayer works fine without that.
I'll be buying it when it releases here in euroland in a few days. I don't understand why it's not on steam though.

Great game on console and on PC, but like any other game if somebody wishes to find some nitpicks to talk themselves out of playing it they can.

BTW for those who don't know, the demo is the FULL GAME, online and all, except restricted to a time trial. There is a store in the demo to unlock/purchase the full game. So in essence, the demo is really the full game install.

Game runs like a champ. 1680x1050, High Detail, 4x AA, never below 45 if even that low. There aren't many options to play around with in the trial version though, so it might get better looking. Also, there is no option for my gamepad? I assume this is also a trial issue. I'd love to buy their game if their servers were not down.

Put just over an hour in, and I'm hooked. The sense of speed is incredible, especially on the bikes, wow. Graphically, looks amazing and never dips into low frame-rate. Showtime smash or whatever... that was hilarious and awesome, just pressed them wondering what it did, and boy was I surprised and happy. Bouncing around causing mayhem, sweet.

Axion, the gamepad won't show up until you go to map a key and hit the gamepad button. Then it'll be listed in the input devices area, under keyboard.

Or until I re-enable it in Device Manager because it was showing up in games I don't want it to... doh. Thanks for the tip though.

Ah. Yeah, for me, it didn't show up under input devices in game, even though it was working perfectly (had just played some Garou on GGPO with it). Once I decided to try pressing it when mapping a button, it worked, and now shows up under keyboard.

All I had to do is push a button on my Logitech pad and it started recognizing it immediately and switched all the onscreen button guides from keyboard keys to gamepad buttons.
For the most part, I'm impressed, especially by how well it runs. Blackbox has a dual core 2ghz Athlon X2 and only a 7300 LE, but I managed to run the game quite playably at low settings, and it still looks decent enough.
I've mostly enjoyed just running about though, I haven't had any luck with the missions at all. I was actively annoyed by the result of the first one I did, as I'd been under the assumption that the free form nature of the game meant I'd have some freedom to choose my own route in a race. Some clever navigating meant that even after a nasty wreck and one missed turn, I managed to hit the goal point in what should've been third place, but the game didn't recognize it at all and instead claimed I'd gotten 6th and failed the race.
The Marked Man mission I tried was just frustrating as crap on account of those guys chasing you are bastards from hell.
Next I'm gonna try it on Whitebox and see how well it runs there with the OC'd 6600.

The SSAO was a little too much for my friend's computer, but from what I saw him play, it looks incredible. He even had it at 8x AA, and it was running smooth at a constant 60 fps.
The bikes rock so much! I need to buy this game as soon as possible. :(

02-06-2009, 01:04 AM
I am not a big racing fan and have no gamepad or wheel or anything like that so I wasn't sure if I should even bother giving it a try but after seeing the widescreen video and talking to Axion a bit I decided to give it a download.
The trial is the "full" game. You get half an hour of play time. I got to do 3 or 4 challenges in that time, it went by really quick. After my time was up I spent another half an hour just driving around the city in a speed car hitting ramps and crashing into things. It wouldn't let me do anymore challenges after the half hour. It was very fun and I enjoyed it a lot, very tempted to pick it up. Especially, since it ran ridiculously smooth with no lowering of FPS that I could notice.
I was running it at medium at 1680 by 1050 as I figured it would run good and since I only had half an hour I wouldn't waste any of that time playing with settings, as I was not sure if menu as such would count once the game was started up. It still looked fantastic though. I was playing it on my laptop with 8600M GT, T7500 Duo core at 2.20 with 2 gigs of ram. I would like to try it at a higher resolution and see if it still runs as smooth.
Control wise, even using the keyboard, it worked well and I could see myself playing with a keyboard and having a good time. It detected the built in webcam and I was able to take a picture for my license with it which was neat. Pretty shitty photo really but still interesting non-the-less.
I played one race, which I manged to take first place in. A destruction one where I had to take out 2 cars, I manged to get 6. My first race was the man hunt one which I manged to finish but was probably my least favourite, with a different car it would of been funner I suppose.
Well like I stated above the game was very fun, well ported and very impressive especially after hearing about all the shitty console to PC ports lately. I would recommend that everyone give the trial a try. With multiplayer I can only see the game being even greater. I didn't really want to buy another game, at this time, with just buying Dawn of War II and planning on picking up Empire: Total War but it was so damn fun I think I may just half to buy it.
Well I already stayed up to late trying this so I should stop there before I continue to ramble further.

It's kind of funny how for PC gamers one of the cool things of Burnout Paradise will be missed, but Criterion is basically being the Valve of racing games. Every month or so they release an update that adds some polish to the game or radically improves it. Problem is the PC version wraps that all up and gives it to you at the start. Not that that's a bad thing, but it doesn't help you understand how much time and thought they've put into improving the game, or how much they've given us for free. Anyway, kind of ironic.

If you look at the Store section, it looks like they've left room for the PC version to continue getting the same content updates the consoles do. The Ultimate Box just gives PC users an all-in-one catch up.

Yeah, Criterion's going to keep the PC version up-to-date. It's just that as someone who bought the game on release I've watched them add weather, day-and-night cycles, motorcycles, new cars, a lot of online modes, and a ton of polish, and PC players are having all that come from the beginning. Not to claim that's bad, but a Valve level of polish and support is rare and I just thought I'd try to communicate to PC players how much Criterion has invested in making the player's experience better.

Well I for one have still been following it and it's hard to miss all the news posts etc. about free DLC and how cool Criterion is. I would have to think most PC players who bought the game knew about it on consoles first and realise that they aren't getting vanilla Burnout.

well after my post i gave the game another go and it didn't crash on me this time for the whole trail which was nice... makes me very tempted to pick it up now. The events are fun and different enough and even just driving around is damned fun.
i managed to do get the speed car but doing the road rage event and taking down the car. I was just driving that around for 10 minutes after the trail was up beacuse it was so much damned fun just speeding around in it put a smile on my face and not only that the crashes at those speed are damned epic so even messing up becomes a fun part of the game.
It's not often games really do just get me grinning while playing them so this is slamming in at number 2 in my must buy next list... number one being dowII

Right, so i caved and went to buy it but there's no way i'm picking it up on EA download service so i find it cheaper on d2d (since EA isn't on steam here yet) cheaper and given that the realise date is today (the 6th of fed) as far as i know i thought i could just buy it grab the key and go back to playing... when i go to download page to get the key it's telling me the game is just per ordered which is crap, didn't say it was pre order on the page i brought it from and the realise date is today god dammit!
If i'd known i couldn't just play i would have left of buying it until next week :( boo!

Ah, yes I've run into the same issue as you Hotcod, did you order from the US or UK D2D store? Ordered yesterday from the UK store, I've opened a ticket with their support but no reply today, and I bet there will be none during the weekend either... Their page still says "PLAY NOW", fucking bullshit. Last time I order from there.
Axion: FRAPS saves movies uncompressed, compressing as you record would be way too slow, you can use windows movie maker to compress the file into a wmv.

i ordered from the UK store and i've just opened a ticket asking what the heck is going on. I could have just picked up a box copy when in town later instead of dealing with this pain in the ass. Annoyingly the money i'm spending is being "taken away" from my weekend fund so if i go out tomorrow there will be less drinks and having to crash at a freinds or find a taxi to share... if i don't get a response this until after the weekend i'm going to be pissed.
Just looks like somes one fucked up and not flicked a switch to turn it from pre ordered to ready to download... grr... i just wanted to play a bit more before i go around my girlfriends in a bit :(
This is why steam is better!

Its still better than buying it from the EA store

Just played some multi-player with Axion and a friend of his. Was good fun and would be interesting to play with 8 people. The transition from single player to multi is smooth and quick and I noticed no lag well playing. Overall the multi-player looks like an enjoyable, the challenges add something specific to do but if you want you can just drive around and smash into each other and try and beat each others street records. Some more of you need to try the trial then pick up the game and join us if you like it; I suppose some of you have played it on console but for those that haven't you should try it.

bullshit... i'm going to open a 3rd ticket and tell them that i'm going to look in to taking up this with any relevant consumer watchdogs i can find. We tried playing with random people but some of them have trouble doing the challenges, like drifting 100 yards or hitting a billboard, it is not like they can't do it they just don't it seem, and ruin the game for everyone else.

As for the online stuff, the whole thing confuses me slightly heh i've hardly done anything with it yet but you might have to bear with me while i get the hang of it all... i'm likely to suck too :( heh

Online is pretty fun because there is so much you can do. Libuke and I did all of the 2 player online challenges which are like specific goal oriented tasks to do all over the map (eg. Get 2000 oncoming uphill at the same time or something). Then with Karnov we did a bunch of the 3-player ones. With pubbies, it was nigh impossible to accomplish anything, since all players must co-operate to achieve the goals. You can also do Races, Road Rage, Marked Man etc. online, but I personally enjoy doing the challenges.

If they sort it out before 5 then i'll close it, if not then screw them. If they can maybe get it sorted by tomorrow and offer something in the way of saying sorry i may let them off but i don't what those assholes to have my money. I'd much rather give my money directly to the damned EA store and that's something i never thought i'd do!

QFT. This is the kind of game where that would work perfectly I would think.
Do I want to buy it again for PC knowing i'd be back to square one in terms of cars? Can someone tell me if it auto-recognises the 360 pad?
God damn you Criterion, when you build, you build awesome.

Pretty sure it autor-recognizes it, as it did my Rumblepad which is probably a lesser used joystick. Gotta say this game is definitely sucking up a lot of my time, I love it. I'm going to have to go for 100% completion as well. All bill boards etc. I think I only have about 7 jumps left to find.
Psykoboy2

You should go for 101%...all jumps, smashes, & billboards along with getting record times and showtime scores on EVERY road in the city (against the AI, not online).

I'd be all over this if it was on Steam. Come on EA!
I'll probably wait until I have a new rig anyway, but I hope this is up on Steam by then.
On the gamepad topic, they talked about it in one of their video-casts. And they wanted all gamepads to be autorecognize by the game, so even though you may have some noname random gamepad, you would still be able to plug it in and play. So they really went to great lengths to get as many gamepads-configs in the game.

I bought the game retail because I don't like the EA store or D2D and they also said you do not need the DVD in the drive, which is most certainly true. You just need the key to play, which you can plug right into your trial which will change it into the full game.
I think it works well as I figured if it ever came to steam it would be some time.

I have to say, i'm not a racing game kind of guy for the most part but i'm really enjoying this. Partly it's at it's core just a kind of game i don't play often but not only is the core fun it layers lots of awesome stuff on top of it to make it even better. I like collecting the cars and how different the events are (wish there was more than just the 3 but can't have everything) and the road rage event is wonderful, when you've got heavy traffic and can cause awesome crashes it's just addictive. I've not even really taken it online yet. Just playing and learning the city. Which is a fun thing about the races not only do you have to out drive every one you have to pick a good root and the crashes with a speed car going full tilt are just beautiful to watch :D
axion

Make sure you try showtime crash if you haven't yet.
Edit: This game is just so much fun, I'm not sure exactly what it is, but even just looking for billboards/smashes/jumps is fun. Not to mention the plethora of vehicles and upgrades, races, online content, and future content to come. That Island expansion sounds awesome.

only problem is that you have to buy the code from the EA store just like you normally would. So long as you keep a back up of the trail (or can download it still from file sites) then EA's stupid download thingy shouldn't be a problem.
So what's every ones favourite car so far?
Mines the carson fastback special. It's the right balance for me, the more powerful speed cars are just too hard for me to control right just yet where as this thing i can drift, in boost, around bends with a grate deal of control. It's winning me races even if i'm not finding quicker roots even if it's starting to cut it fine that way. The carson annihilator also seems awesome, only just unlocked it and the phoenix version but in rode rage it handles well and packs a punch. They both also look rather cool.

You get a lot of the time road rules by just blasting around the city between events, I have all of those done. I have only done ten at most of the showtime road rules though, so that will take a while. I suppose you can stop when you reach a score high enough so you don't spend 15 minutes bouncing down the road for each one.

Hmmm. I have a 360 and a decent PC. However, I always prefer console controllers with racing games and my 360 is hooked up to my widescreen with surround. Is there really any reason for me to get the PC version besides to support PC gaming? This game is currently $20 for 360, and $40 for PC. I'm really leaning towards 360 here.
