View Full Version : The Egregiously Late Episode

An unpardonably late episode of In-Game Chat is now available (http://ingamechat.net/audio/IGC20090130.mp3).
It’s my sacred duty following each episode to string together some of my own thoughts and pin them to the show file that Scott and Jeremy (and formerly Daniel) have made available before dumping the whole mess onto the webs. This episode should have been ready for consumption many days ago, but catastrophic modem failure sent me to a dark hell of no internet for the entire weekend. Other things also happened and so here we are.
In any case, what I’d have normally written in this space is irrelevant now, so I’d simply like to apologize for the delay, and for the bumper to bumper show delivery you’ll get this week thanks to the snafu. That said, we hope you enjoy what we brung you - a second shot at Mike Wilford, zombies of all sorts and a lot more attention for things that mattered last week.

Is there any reason this is titled "The Half Naked Episode" on ingamechat.net?

Loved the LAN party reminiscing. My friends have been having those a couple times a year for over a decade on convenient 3-4 day weekends. Our longest was a Thanksgiving LAN party that went from Wednesday afternoon to Sunday evening, with a break for Turkey Day dinner on Thursday. Our next is only two weeks away. It's definitely a lot easier to get computers together since most of us have gaming laptops and wifi. Left 4 Dead will be dominating the weekend, most likely.

Ha! That's my fault. We always stand around after an episode tossing show names back and forth, and it's my job to remember what that name was agreed to be before posting the content.
After the long weekend delay I couldn't for the life of me remember what we'd decided, and I couldn't get in contact with the other guys, so I just made some shit up.

On when you guys were talking about the date like that...
I understand you guys try to talk like it's the date you try to post the show (the show for Monday the xx), but as this post illustrates it doesn't always work well ('cause hey, shit happens). Personally, I'd rather just have you say the day/date you're actually recording so I have a better frame of reference as to what was available for you to play as well as news-wise. But that's just me. :)
Nice show as always, but I'm more with Scott on the Halo parties having never had a true LAN party. Man, those were fun.

Yeah, they were. And while we were all having fun and stuff we kept hoping for the day we wouldn't have to lug all that shit over to someone's house and set everything up.
LIVE came along and gave us that....except, I think in a way, it took away a bit of the fun. There's something about being in the same room or building with everyone you are playing against.
At PAX, they set up the PC gaming room, but honestly, I'd like them to set up rooms like that for consoles. It'd be great to play some COD4 with the CoG team against a 1UP team or CheapAssGamer team, but all of us in the same room doing that.

That's true. There's a certain social aspect I miss about a group of people there in person. I still remember walking down the hall of my dorm and seeing a group of people in one room cheering then simultaneously hearing a group of people in another room moaning (dorm was hardwired througout), I think that was with Halo 2, though (and the first attempt at college).

I use CRT by choice
I used to be really serious about CS (1.6) and TFTs don't have performance that's comparable to CRTs.
@ EVE, in case you (james) don't know they're going to introduce wormholes in march, and T3 + walking in stations sometime this year
You should stick with it :d it gets really good when you get back into it

The MP3 ended up in the right section of my iRiver this time. So whatever mumbo jumbo you pulled worked.

Great episode! The LAN reminiscing was especially enjoyable for me. I always wanted to go to a LAN but didn't really have the means to when I was younger. My buddy and I did our own little two man LAN from time to time, and those were always a blast.
I think that online gaming has taken out a lot of the social aspect of it that I used to enjoy so much.

I agree 100%. Just say the date you're recording on at the start of the show (your "now"), and from then you can just talk naturally without having to second guess all the time. You're right, most of us realise it takes time to get up a podcast :).
Enjoyed the LAN gaming chat. Was an avid LAN gamer in the day originally with my university friends. Then I met a bunch of people online playing competitive Warcraft 2 via Kali. From then, for about the next 6 or 7 years, we got together semi regularly for LANs. Some LANs would literally go from Friday night, around 6, to Sunday afternoon, around 2. Short breaks for sleep, about 4-5 hours, although some folks literally wouldn't sleep. Glorious fun with games such as Warcraft 3 (a lot of TD too), Starcraft, CS, UT 2k4, and C&C Renegade (yeah this was actually pretty fun!).

I'd echo the "just say the recording date, and make all references from there" feelings. Mostly because I never get to listen to the show on the "release date" anyway. Normally is it one or two day later depending on how many pod-casts I'm behind and the state of my commute (the only time I can listen to my stuff). (But I could have sworn I said that at least one time before.. Hrm.)
I still have a CRT at home. Then again, it's because I'm broke and my last job replaced all of the CRT's with flat-screens. :) I've been trying to save up for a good flat-screen that also has video inputs of some state.. so I can play a console even when the "main" TV is tied up.
Oh.. BTW: "I just wish I knew which of my friends have Worms!" I'm sure you do, but I think that violates some health, safety and/or privacy laws somewhere. Plus, it would be a little invasive of Microsoft. :)

I have Worms.
The Halo party talk reminded me a little of when we used to have GoldenEye tournaments. We didn't have system link back then, but we still had a dozen guys taking turns! Those were the days...

Another great episode. You guys rock.
You went totally the opposite way I thought you would on the PoP DLC topic, though. It seems to me like another limp attempt at a cash-grab, like saying "Hey, give us another $10 and you can have the real ending."
This DLC stuff is a dangerous line for a publisher/developer to walk, as evidenced by your interview with the producer of The Maw. But you know, with Horse Armor still apparently selling daily, maybe they just don't give a fuck what us, the hardcore 3% on the fringe of gaming, think.

Don't worry. We did just that on last night's recording. We totally appreciate the feedback.

Oh yeah, I totally forgot about GoldenEye. Thursdays or so were always spent in a crowded apartment with a bunch of people playing GoldenEye on one system while other waited their turns playing either Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo on PS1 or Smash Brothers on the other N64.
Another great episode. You guys rock.
Hey thanks! We appreciate you listening and taking the time to come tell us this.

Oh, man, GoldenEye! That was the game that got me into "hardcore!" It still claims my all-time favorite moment.
We were in a multiplayer session on one of the maps with multiple levels and ramps (indoors), and I was up on what I deemed a 'sniper perch' since it was a ramp that dead-ended into a wall opening with a railing. All I had was an AK, though, and I was spraying my buddy down when he threw a mine at me. Through shear luck, I hit it in midair and it blew up right in front of me. I still love that moment.

A favorite GoldenEye memory: either declaring "no Oddjob!" or fighting over who gets to be him.
