So I bought a nice Macbook Pro on Craiglist (awesome freaking price) Three hours into using it I find that the right fan starts to make horrible amounts of noise. Two days later it stops working RPM=.. With a little research and 50 bucks I was able to order a new fan. I just finished installing it five minutes ago and it works great.

I ordered the fan from Ifixit.com and I got it in 2 days.

I'm not used to working on Macbooks and man was it crammed in there.

Feels good baby... feels good. Even with both fans on running at full brightness and full power there is no way anyone can have this sit on their "Lap Top". You could fry an egg on this mofo.

Yeah. Apple's laptops are pretty awesome, but one thing they are definitely not is cool.

Part of it's unfortunately a deliberate aesthetic choice. The fans are downrevved to reduce noise mainly, as well as further increase battery life.

Heh, the hdd just died in my iBook G4. I replaced it a few years ago and it was a b*tch. I looked around for better directions to replace the drive and I found them on Ifixit.com as well. Now just to buy a new hdd.

Grats on fixing it. I dislike working on Macs myself.

It wasn't a great experience. I have to admit though, Apple Engineering is quite great, I've messed with lots of PC Laptops.. it's almost as if Apple is ahead in terms of overall build quality. Much to my chagrin I've read that Macbook Pros seems to have faulty fans quite often.

Mac Pros are sweet as fuck to work on. Almost everything in the damn thing is pathetically easy, except changing out the CPUs.

FTFY.

I say this as a MBP owner and somebody whose job involves quite a lot of laptop repair.

Here's your list of best to worst engineered laptops in terms of construction:

Gateway
Acer
Dell/Apple/IBM-Lenovo
Toshiba
EVERYTHING ELSE IN THE FUCKING WORLD

HP/Compaq

Getting everything to snap back together was the hardest part. Darn those little metal tabs.

I love that gap. I hate everything hp/compaq (they are not even worthy of capital letters). ;) I really hate their older machines, such a pita to work on.

What an asshole, selling you a broken laptop! (Unless you knew at time of purchase)

Congrats on fixing it!

Well it was Craigslist and he tried to tell me that it was within spec and the people at Apple said it was okay. I ran the diag and it was a bad fan( it initially wasn't making noise until it was on for about 30 minutes.). To his credit he came back and said he would give me the 50 it cost to fix it and he seemed like a nice guy with integrity. He said he honestly didn't know it would go bad.

In the long run I still got a great deal. it's a 2.16 with everything maxed out for 1 grand.. On Ebay they are about 1400 before shipping so I figure I still got out on top.. The laptop is great.

Now that you've had that thing open, you might want to have a look at this thread about re-applying the thermal paste on your MBP (if you Google around a bit, you'll find a couple of how-tos.. this was just the first link I found with actual before/after temps posted)

http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=199840

Sounds like it can make a pretty substantial difference if you have one where the paste is applied badly.

Well, thats why they are "notebooks" and not "laptops" :p (same with most companies now)

Depends on what you're doing. If you're on the lap the heat isn't always so bad if you're not maxing out the CPU and you can set it to reduced power mode to keep it cooler.

But yeah, aluminum can get toasty.

Apparently if you disable the fan speed limiter they get a lot cooler. It was discovered by accident back on one of the earlier MacBooks when some idiots thought they'd "solved" the heat problem by redoing the thermal paste, when what they'd actually done was assembled it wrong in such a way as to fool the fan sensor into running at 100% speed.

I've got the same issue with my Thinkpad right now.

I've had it for about a year and the fan went out without me noticing (it was always really quite). Then it started locking up if I opened a game due to overheating, so I finally noticed. I ordered the heatsink/fan assembly on ebay used because to get it new everyone wanted more than 100 dollars....

Now i've got the new one in and the fans already going bad. It is loud as fuck... about to go out. Ugh.

Pretty happy with the MBP now that the fan is fixed and I found fan control software.
