What do you think about an "OS/Software" or "OS/App" to cover topics like Gmail offline, Photo Synth, IE/Firefox/Chrome, Open Office, etc. ?
I do not care which one you go with (I like OS/software better than OS/apps) but you have incredible timing. I came to CoG to ask a question related to googles new This site may harm your computer feature that is basically rendering google useless for me.... ...I will save it for the new forum... ..so hurry up. :D

The idea's credit goes to Fitty. He asked me about it last night and I nor Ten19 had an opinion either way. So I thought it best to ask the community if you felt it was needed.

I'd be against adding more non-gaming related forums. My suggestion instead would be to widen the scope of the existing PC building forum by renaming it to something more general purpose.

If this were anywhere but here I would say that OS could be misleading into thinking they were operating system apps and software. I think something that actually says Open Source would be a better title to avoid confusion with Operating System.

I agree with Dangerous Daze, expand the PC Building section to include Software. There is already quite a few forums here, and it isn't like we have an overwhelming number of OS / App discussions that might warrant a separate forum.

Eh, I'd be more in favor of just making a non-gaming related software forum. OS and apps don't need individual forums; I think they'd be kind of bare on their own.

I like the idea of specific locations for certain threads. While a lot of the software stuff could indeed go into the building forum, a majority of it probably wouldn't. Especially when it comes to troubleshooting.

A Software/Os would be great, I love our desktop thread, so that'd be a great start!

That's why I recommended changing the name to make it more inclusive. Too many forums just clutters the place up and makes it difficult to browse.

I think the question here is what precisely needs separation. Thing is that if software turns out to be a popular subject then by not separating it would clutter up the PC building section. Though if it were not too popular, it could coexist without issue and thus making a secondary forum rather unnecessary. I think the decision should come down to just how much material do we forecast this new subject to generate?

There could be a software and a separate hardware forum...I've had plenty of issue with both, but I don't think there's necessarily enough traffic to warrant two separate forums.

I would've figured this would've already fallen under the purview of Technology Station, that's where I've posted similar questions before.
Barring that, simply expanding the System Building and Troubleshooting nomenclature and description to a more inclusive category for general non-gaming PC discussion.

It would probably make sense to turn "PC and MMO Sanctuary" into a general PC gaming forum and the system building forum into a general PC non-gaming forum. That way you cover both angles without cluttering up the place with unpopulated boards.
You also remove the potential for confusion if and when console-based MMO's hit the streets. ;)

I believe your suggestion makes the most sense. How would you name the two forums?

PC Games, Entertainment, and Distractions.
PC Hardware, Apps, and Operating Systems.

We are going to rename both of them...
PC and MMO Sanctuary -> PC Gaming
System Building and Troubleshooting -> PC Hardware & Software

Seems like a pretty elegant solution.

Sorry for not answering. I'm on a business trip all this week (trying to catch up during lunch without anyone seeing what's on my screen!)
