I had not seen anybody post about this yet, BUT, gMail is now available in offline mode!

...to use it, you must download Google Gears (http://gears.google.com/). Here are the steps outlined from the gmail blog (http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2009/01/new-in-labs-offline-gmail.html) page...
We're making offline Gmail available to everyone who uses Gmail in US or UK English over the next couple of days, so if you don't see it under the Labs tab yet, it should be there soon. Once you see it, just follow these steps to get started:
1] Click Settings and click the Labs tab.
2] Select Enable next to Offline Gmail.
3] Click Save Changes.
4] After your browser reloads, you'll see a new "Offline0.1" link in the upper righthand corner of your account, next to your username. Click this link to start the offline set up process and download Gears if you don't already have it.

The PCWorld write up seemed impressed with it, even the process.

Wow, thanks for the heads-up! I just downloaded all my mail, I think. Pretty cool!

Sweet, I've been waiting for this to show up in my Labs tab since they announced it the other day.

This is barely related but I'm wondering if there's anyway to send mail using GMail's own sendmail server (if there is one)? I ask, because lately my ISPs sendmail server is misbehaving a lot and it's annoying to have to copy and paste the email over to the web client to send it.

It might be a couple of months worth depending on volume.

Thanks man, I can't believe I couldn't find that extremely useful piece of information.

I think the hard number is 10,000 emails. Which for me is all of my useful email.

Plus, it says in the doc that any starred e-mails are available offline...assuming you don't have 10 001 starred e-mails; then you're fucked.

I think one write up mentioned it gets starred email first.
PC World (http://www.pcworld.com/article/158480/offline_gmail_is_almost_like_the_real_thing.html) get some info on it:
"We try to download your most recent conversations along with any conversations that seem to be important (regardless of their age). We also try not to dowload uninteresting conversations. This process is done heuristically and as with any heuristic can and will miss things. We'll continue to tune things up, but more importantly, we'll eventually provide a UI that will allow you to change the settings. Here's a sketch of how these messages are selected:
Synchronization is based on the date of conversations. The system estimates a period of time to cover (at least 1 week in length) that results in approximately 10,000 messages being downloaded. For an average user, this means Gmail will end up downloading several years of mail."
