So, anyone around here still play Classic BattleTech? I miss playing it regularly; just not much of a group for that sort of thing here in Montgomery. What an epic wargame, though. We should try and find a way to organize an online campaign.
BattleTech is awesome. Discuss.

I used to play a bit when I was in college, but I never had a big group to do so. I'd definitely be up for re-learning everything if we could get something together.
My group was more into 2nd Edition Shadowrun, but that's for a different thread...

I played it a lot in high school. Had a friend that loved it and we'd play at least one game every time we got together and we found a local comic shop that had a setup in the back with a huge sandbox in it for full-scale war.

That's why I love you, Ghost. No hello thread. No "Oh, this is what is happening!" post. Just a beeline for the mech thread. You're my hero.
That being said, know of a good way to accomplish online BTech goodness?

There needs to be some better documentation on that thing. Maybe I'll whip up a little how-to sometime, and see if we can get rolling with that.

I would love to play MegaMek if someone can explain it to me... I downloaded it, poked it, said "huh" and uninstalled it.
Also, somewhat unrelated... does anyone besides me have Steel Battalion?

I -want- Steel Battalion, does that help?
No! But if you guys ever make your pilgrimage to Austin, I'll make sure to hold a Steel Battalion Day. It's very tiring, like driving a big 18-wheeler I imagine, so it's pretty easy to take turns.

Awesome. It's too bad the campaign co-op servers went down, but if you're up for some giant mech vs mech love, we can make it happen.
Im intrested and i understand Megamek pretty well.
so if your intrested let me know here or on etg chat

I wonder if the co-op still works over LAN. Hrrm.
I don't know. I think the campaign (co-op) mode required dedicated servers. As far as I can tell you can only do regular deathmatch... which is still fun, but co-op was great. You have to have the Line of Contact expansion for either, though. See this site http://www.lineofcontact.net/ where apparently there are still people getting together every Sunday to play SB.
If anyone but you and I have this, we may need to start a Steel Battalion thread and stop hijacking this one :)

This is epic. I plan on doing a basic "how-to" next week. (This week has already cost too much of my gaming time with the site launch)
If someone wants to do one before then, by all means. But if no one else feels up to it, I'll hit it up next week.

Good idea, I've got it as well (along with Line of Contact) CoG Steel Batallion?
Oh yeah, Battletech... i haven't played since the days the Macross mechs were still in (Excalibur is the king!). Love me that Timber wolf/Mad Cat too though.
We actually played a fair bit of Mechwarrior PnP back in the day. Heavy Gear always had the best "purely RPG" system of the mech stuff though.
Good idea, I've got it as well (along with Line of Contact) CoG Steel Batallion? And then there were three! Once things settle down for me, I think we'll need our own SB thread and try to organize some Sunday meetups with the existing SB community. Since we're a dying breed, the people over at LineOfContact.net seem very friendly and open to all skill levels. I was OK at it but haven't played in awhile, and learning your SB cockpit is a huge learning curve.

Love me that Timber wolf/Mad Cat too though. No kidding, those were the best mech designs. None of the non-macross designs ever did it for me- too humanoid without that "cool" factor the Macross mechs had.
I played a lot of tabletop Battletech, a little of the Mechwarrior RPG (didn't do much for me) and a couple of the early Battletech PC games. I hope MegaMek scratches the itch. I'd also like to get whatever Battletech PC game Ghostbear was telling me was the best one (3 or 4, I can't remember) and fire that up, regardless of how outdated it may be.

In between missions you can equip and re arm. The problem with guns like the auto cannon is that sometimes ammo can be hard to find :)

I used to have tons of minis and play all the time in high school, though mostly I only played with my then girl-friend now wife, or my bud Ranger43. The day I sold those minis was a sad day for me, but a happy one for my wallet. I sometimes regret selling them, I spend so much time and even some blood into building my armies.
Anyone able to get the Megamek (http://megamek.sourceforge.net/idx.php?pg=links) site to work properly?
K nevermind, went to the scourceforge site and got the newest updated version from Sept 15, 2008. Got it to run fine in Vista, now just need to learn the UI and get someone to play.

Sure,it's cool but I watched it once on Youtube and I discovered a bit of a logic error on it-
The scene where the Thor "looks" down at the soldier as the foot crushes him...considering that the cockpit is immobile, the angle at which the pilot is looking down is just impossible. After I noticed it...it just bugged me...because the whole scene is just retarded to begin with, not to mention, if fitting with the game, the Mad Cat is using large lasers on...infantry men and already busted ass APC...and then uses...<,< machineguns and small pulse lasers on the Atlus...who proceeds to fire three large pulse lasers at it! and the IS guys just completely sacrifice the seemingly still fully combat ready Atlus (which doesn't appear in the game Mechwarrior 3 anyway)
Why does it have to be the Mad Cat that gets it's ass whooped anyway? Mech2? Mad cat. 3? Madcat and Thor. Mechcommander? another Mad Cat...suffers the indignity of being slain by a fucking Raven
it's late, I can't help but rant...

Cameras. If my mech knowledge is up there, you can get pretty much a full 360 degree view because it isn't a view from the cockpit you use, there are cameras that feed into the HUD. If you could only see out of the actual cockpit space, 90% of the mechs would be no threat because they would have massive blindspots.

First of all, they didn't sacrfice the Atlas, the mad cat went critical and he had to eject. In mechcommander the madcat was NOT killed by a raven, but by a Thug, and a couple other mechs. I can link the video if you want.

I know this is supposed to be about the P&P... but damn if I don't miss the Mechwarrior games. MechCommander was absolutely awesome too. Hell, I'll go so far as to say I miss CHROMEHOUNDS.
There just isn't enough Mech based tactical/strategy type gameplay out there in the video game sense. =(

no, the thug or hunchback or whatever gets owned the MadCat right away, the Centurion and commando run one way and the Raven "gets it's attention" and leads it in a chase so the other two can get a hit on it's rear armor, but then it's the same Raven that gets the finishing blow.

The model they used for the MadCat is just about perfect IMO.

we ll lets see 1 50 tonner 1 35 tonner, 1 25 tonner, all Is equip vs one of the best clan mechs. Im not counting the hunchie because it was outranged no matter what since its ac has one of the shortest ranges in the game. Id say it was a pretty fair fight from the board game standing. 1.35(is)to 1(clan) tonnage seems like pretty fair oddss.

The Hunchback and Hunchback 2c were always one of my favorite mechs.
personally for the hunchie serioes i like the Sway backs. Rip off the Ac/20 and put in as many med lasers and heat sinks as possible. I wasnt to happy with the newest Tro with new mechs in it the Word of blake was the only faction to get decent modern machines. The age of war stuff was real sweet though.

Goodness I loved reading this thread. I read a few of the Clan books when I was a kid and played Mechwarrior 2 as good as any 12 year old could (which was not very well, in retrospect, even if I could manage to beat TIE-Fighter). If there's any way for me to sit in on a game or something I'd love to.
