I'm not seeing improvements in Jessica Alba's acting skills, and it's been how many years since she started acting? I'm normally not the guy who is all "it needs to be just like teh comix!!!" (I think changing the ending of Watchmen is fine, and dug the hell out of V for Vendetta), but it absolutely baffled me that they would hire someone to play Nancy who wouldn't get naked. It's not like the movie wouldn't have sold itself, anyway. They should have canned Alba's no-talent, fully-clothed ass and gotten someone in there who can act and who will actually play a stripper who gets, you know, naked.

I don't think Sin City suffered for Alba not popping her top, and I don't think that most moviegoers saw that expecting her to pop her top. I know for me I went to see it more for all of the (well-deserved) buzz surrounding Mickey Rourke's portrayal of Marv. I thought that was a pretty sweet little movie, though... all things considered. Rosario Dawson being in it didn't hurt either.

Plus they had That Yellow Bastard in it too, and that was pretty cool. I don't know, for someone who only read the first story in the series, I thought it was pretty cool.

Well, I'm sure that happens sometimes, but it's rare. I mean, when we shoot anything like this, there are about 6-8 people standing around out of frame. And our productions weren't well-funded. A Hollywood production has more, for sure.

So as an actor you have about 12 people watching you. You're nervous and the lights are getting hot. In between takes you and your co-actor have to lie there while the camera is moved or lights adjusted or other equipment (flags, cables, etc.) are moved.

Like I said, it's very unsexy.

Back on actual topic. Watched The Wrestler yesterday night, thought I'd give myself some time to think it over. Marisa is a very good actress, I wouldn't say her performance in The Wrestler was stunning exactly, but I couldn't imagine the part she played to have been played any better by anyone. She has the talent of being able to show a complex combination of emotions and motives at once that many "A list"ers lack and she's not bad eye-candy at the same time. It is absolutely one of the best movies I've seen in a while. I went into it because I was curious about Mickey Rourke's performance. I assumed I would hate the rest of the movie since, like you, I despise WWE antics. Despite that (or maybe because of it) I loved it.

There is some wrestling in the movie. In fact, there is a brutal couple of scenes featuring some "hardcore wrestling (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hardcore_Wrestling)" that is almost unbearable to watch, but those scenes are there to illustrate how seriously broken Randy "The Ram" really is at this point in his life. The film could've easily been about any entertainment venue. In fact, Tomei's character is a parallel to Rourke's because as a stripper, she is in the same business - giving cheap entertainment to a (mostly) pathetic and primal audience by selling her body and soul.

You just piqued my interested Telefrog. I'll definitely move the movie up to the top of my Netflix queue when it comes out. I might even go see it at the theatre if I can convince one of my friends to come along.

Do you guys recommend The Wrestler? The previews didn't interest me in the least, as I find wrestling (especially WWE style) to be really obnoxious. Obviously Marisa Tomei naked isn't an incentive for me either.

Thoughts?

I haven't seen it, but I'm sure I'd enjoy it if I did. It looks like a big time super-emotional character study, which is right up my alley. It's also winning awards left and right. I might give it a watch before it leaves theaters, but I've been spending so much on movies lately that I feel like I shouldn't.

Well, I know about on-set production norms from being on set and producing. I know about the differences between small, one-camera adult film production versus two-camera independent or larger budget film production by being on set for both.

By no means am I placing myself as an expert in the field, but it's naive to think that the environment is conduscive to erections just because it's Marisa Tomei. These actors are professionals doing their job. There's a lot more going on than simulated humping. Marisa Tomei - or any other actress - is not going to be pleased nor impressed if Hoffman starts poking her with his hard dick during a take. I'm being honest here.

It's easy for people to misunderstand this because 'ohmygodMarisaTomeisisohotiwannafuckher' but the reality is a lot less titillating. That's why it's called Hollywood Magic!

I agree completely. I saw this last night and really enjoyed it. I've never been a big fan od Mickey Rourke, but he was really good in this.
