View Full Version : PC games forum suggestion

First off, congrats to the IM guys and the cool new forum. I'd like to point out that we have two forums for the same thing right now since this has happened... and we don't need two forums for the same subject dividing talk between the PC Sanctuary forum and the IM one. So perhaps it'd be better to merge them and come up with a hybrid name (Or just IM with PC games in the description?) to avoid confusions.
I've heard this suggestion from some other people as well and thought I'd let it out here in the open.

I want to start off by saying that I really like the way IM was integrated into the existing forum design.
I agree with Bogard
I noticed that we still have the PC Gaming / MMO section as well. It seems to me like this will divide up the PC Gaming News posts between this section, and the IM part of the site.
I think we'd be better off having one unified PC Gaming forum under the IM title. We could probably keep the existing link, and just have it redirect.
I don't know the coding so I don't know how difficult but we could probably move all the existing PC Gaming posts there as well.
The other thing is that if IM is going to be doing hardware reviews and such, maybe we should move the PC related hardware threads from the "Technology" thread, over to the IM portion of the site.
Those are just a few of my thoughts. I'd love to hear what the community has to say about it.

I certainly agree that there should only be one. If CoG is really taking in IM as part of the site, it might be best to allow PC control to them.

So wait IM should have control over ALL of PC gaming stuff?! OMGWTFBBQ!!!
Okay, sounds good. ;)
Even though I don't spend much time in the PC section of things as i don't own one, I still agree with the fine people above me. I could easily see the PC/MMO stuff heading to IM.

It's being discussed in the upper echelons of CoG HQ! :)

Alright... Do you suggest having the current PC Gaming discussion forum as a sub forum inside of the Immortal Machines section? It would make it list just like the other three subforums...
Or, would you like the current PC Gaming discussion forum to become the standard Immortal Machines forum? This would replace the one that is currently setup?
Also, what section in the forums should we retain Immortal Machines? Shall it remain in the "News and Feature" section or be moved to the "Gaming the CoG Way" section?
We won't make any movement until there is a consensus on what the colony feels would be best. Thanks.

The standard forum. I think that, should you list PC Gaming as a subforum, the IM parent forum serves little purpose, does it not? We already have a Lounge for general discussions, a news forum, and a hardware forum.
Just my $0.02.

I think have the current PC Gaming discussion forum become the default Immortal Machines forum. Else it would feel like PC gaming wasn't part of CoG, just IM.

Here's my suggestion, although I'm willing to bet it will be a lot of work...
Instead of the current setup with the 3 "Headers" of News and Features, Gaming the CoG Way, and Life Off Colony.... we change it up to a 4 "Header" forum, and re-arrange slightly to as follows (changes in Bold)
News and Features
--- Gaming News
--- CoG Features
--- In Game Chat
Gaming the CoG Way
--- Console Heaven
--- Handheld and Mobile Gaming
--- General Gaming
--- Matchmaking Square
--- Analog Gaming
Immortal Machines
--- PC and MMO Sanctuary
--- Podcast
--- Evaluations
--- Guides
--- System Building and Troubleshooting
Life Off Colony
--- The Lounge
--- Deals and Trading
--- Screen Page and Song
--- Home Theater and Electronics
--- Creative Arts
--- Maintenance Bay
--- PiRi Politics and Religion Forums
Like I said, may definitely be a bunch of work, but for some reason I think this would be a good organizational way.

That's not a lot of work at all. It is very easy, actually... I do like this proposition. Do others care to share their opinion of this idea?
I worked out a potential setup as follows...
Main Forum: Immortal Machines (news forum about the site specifically. Will contain annoucements and stickys)
Sub-Forum 1 : PC and MMO Sanctuary (open discussion)
Sub-Forum 2 : System Building and Troubleshooting (open discussion)
Sub-Forum 3 : Podcast (news forum about the podcast)
Sub-Forum 4 : Features (news forum containing guides and evaluations)
Sub-Forum 5 : News (news forum containing industry news about PC Gaming)

I like it, seems pretty commonsensical.

ummm... you guys might want to take "PC Hardware" out of the Technology Discussion description... just a head's up if you didn't notice it. I know you're not done... Please don't hurt me.

Take a look now and see if it is better. I'm adjusting all sorts of knobs and wheels...

Anyway I could use one of the standard CoG themes in the IM forums? Not that I don't like the IM design, I just want consistency. Switching between them is a bit hard on the eyes.

As soon as I'm done adjusting all the forums I'll turn off forced theme in IM. :)
Edit : Completed.

Just a suggestion for the sub-forums, most of the current members are aware that IM is PC centric, however new members will not be aware of this. You should make it a bit more obvious that IM, or at least the descriptions for the sub-forums, are PC related.
ie. System Building and Troubleshooting
Evaluations and Guides

Well it was coming up in the recent threads module as just "News" so I wanted to be sure it was apart from the "Gaming News" of CoG. So, I put an IM in the front of our three front page content forums. :)
Adjusted it a bit so it made more sense.

Ya, that makes more sense. I agree to keep IM for the features and the podcast. Looks great.

I have mixed feelings on this. On the one hand, I know that PC gaming will be in great hands. On the other, it now feels like its separate from the rest of the gaming sub forums. I imagine its all a work in progress though.

I don't see it as being separate, to be honest. I look at it more of being expanded, and it makes sense to not break up the flow of the "Gaming the CoG Way" forum with all the sub-forums. We're on the same forums, and on the same site, still feels cohesive to me :D

WOW. I just clicked on my first PC thread, and let me be the first to say that one does not just walk into Immortal Machines.
Now I feel like I need more cred to even look at PC-related topics.
So...I downloaded Spelunky as a start. =)
