Do a lot of people post from their phones? I at least read a ton from my BlackBerry which is tough with this message board system as you have to scroll left or right to see the names (unless you change the browser formatting to one of the crazy ones). Does someone involved in the technical details of the system know if they have a mobile version that is 100% text based for us that use the net on our phones constantly.

I know that I would post a heck of a lot more from the road if it was easier. Thoughts?

There are mobile styles that can be added to make a VB forum work nicely on a mobile, but there's a bit of a shortcut built into VB as standard.

Go to the forum archive:

Then select the [PDA] link in the top right. It's not perfect by any stretch, but it's better than a poke in the eye with a pointed stick. ;)

That's pretty damn fantastic. However looks like I can't post from there. Am I missing something? Also thanks for the tip.

I dono, getting poked in the eye would definitely make for an interesting day.

No, it's read-only I'm afraid.

I've been thinking about making a CSS override for my iPhone, I wonder if they'd be up for using it.

There are mobile styles for VB that the site admin can install. This is a good one:

There are screenies if you want to see what it would look like in action. Looks pretty good. :)

I'm using opera and the small screen view works to an extent, could try that meanwhile the site itself hasn't been changed.

I brought a similar issue up, and the art director seemed... less than excited about the prospect of accomodating the "less than 1%" of us who use mobile/TV/smaller resolutions.

Well, you can understand why the halfling doesn't want to get involved with VB hacks (that can potentially screw up your site) for less than 1% of his visitors.

We'll look into something in the future possibly - at least an iPhone friendly version. Right now it's towards the bottom of the list of priorities unfortunately.

Yeah, we could do something down the line, but as I said before, when I checked out the analytics, I could see there was only one person using 800 x 600. It's like asking me to code the site to work in IE 5.5.

Sometime down the line, we can institute a mobile style, but it's not a priority issue, especially since the vast majority of mobile users are on iPhones and can zoom/pan the site just fine.

Sorry to come off as harsh, but our "To Do" list is very long, and adjusting the site to meet the needs of a single user with an obscure setup (at least among the known userbase) isn't a priority issue.

Yeah I can dig that. I do think that even on an iPhone it is a pain in the ass to navigate a message board system. This however, is just my opinion so I can certainly see it as a low priority.

For now, reading the archive while on my phone works fine. Then I just post when I get to a PC.

Thanks for the feedback.
