As January winds to a close, so too does this look back at the overlooked or underappreciated games of 2008.

This week, we take a look at the game that came out on the Xbox 360 (and PS3) that had great potential but was terribly marketed and overlooked by most gamers.

Get ready to get your pillaging on!

Viking: Battle For Asgard

Platform: 360/PS3
Year: 2008
Rating: Hel Yeah!
# of Players: 1

Viking: Battle For Asgard hacked and slashed its way onto the 360 and PS3 back in March of 2008. While it is multiplatform, I consider it a 360 if only because there are elements of the game that only make sense on the 360 in the form of items to search out that exist only for achievements. These items are on the PS3 version of the game but as there are no trophies associated with their procurement, they don't really have any reason to be there.

So now that that's out of the way, let's dig into the meat of the game.

Viking: Battle For Asgard puts you in the fur-lined boots of Skarin, a viking warrior so scary that viking moms tell their little vikinglets stories about him to scare them at night. The best description I've heard of Skarin is that he's essentially a ninja viking.

That's you on the left.

You spend a large part of Viking: Battle For Asgard doing rudimentary stealth missions in your quest to reclaim enemy territories and free your fellow viking warriors. These missions are rather varied, as you might be tasked with killing an enemy commander in one area to leading a small squad of rescued vikings into a skirmish against an enemy fort.

As you progress through each of the 3 island 'levels' of the game, you gain new abilities and tools which will open new paths through the world as well as aiding you in your ultimate goal of taking down the enemy strongholds.

One of the smaller sieges in the game.

Sieges and massive battles are the high point of the game as they can involve hundreds of units slugging it out on a massive battlefield. During these epic battles, Skarin can call down dragons to rain death and destruction on the battlefield, hunt down the shamans who summon enemy units and once all of that is over, he will wade into the fray and go toe-to-toe with enemy champions and giants. There is a rudimentary morale system at play during these seiges and every time you pull off a crippling blow against the enemy forces, your troops will gain a bonus. Skarin can also cast spells which give your troops an added elemental attack to their weapons, such as lightning or fire.

Given that Creative Assembly is responsible for the Total War games on PC, it's not surprising that they were able to get such a large number of units to work on screen with minimal slowdown.

Viking: Battle For Asgard is also a fairly gory game, as you will be decapitating and dismembering a fair number of the enemy troops as you try to stave off Ragnarok and reclaim the land from the forces of Hel and the evil Legion.

The biggest complaint against the game is that it does get repetitive by the time you're on the third island. While the open world aspect of the game does give you freedom to choose which objectives to complete as you liberate the islands, there isn't nearly enough variety in these tasks. That said, the visceral combat tends to alleviate any sense of boredom from setting in.

Here are a couple of videos to get your battlelust up!

You can find Viking: Battle For Asgard new for about $15-20 in most stores and online and used for even less.

You made it back upon the forum pages aka not in your blog anymore. I like this better :).

I remember when this game came out but it was real quiet. I thought about putting it on my Gamefly but I was just to bogged down in classes so I stuck with handheld games. But through the months, this game was one I would constantly hear about. This is one of my top gets from bargain bin buying I did at the end of last year.

Great pick.

I couldn't really get into this game. I don't know what it is, I've played worse games for longer but this one never really clicked with me.

You made it back upon the forum pages aka not in your blog anymore. I like this better :)Well, I still have this in my blog but I figured it makes for better comment management not to have things split all over the site.

I'm glad you liked the pick though. I had a really hard time trying to decide what game on the 360 got the shaft last year. Viking was the only one that I thought was both unplayed by a lot of people AND good enough to recommend with few reservations.

I find on the PS3 and 360 that the games that don't do very well usually deserve not to do very well. There might be the odd gem but it's usually more a matter of a game doing well despite being utterly frustrating (see: The Force Unleashed) than a game being really good but not selling a lot.

Does it have co-op or is it straight up single player?

Nevermind, I didn't read the description!

I bought this a few weeks back and played it only once. It was enjoyable, but I didn't really give it a fair chance. Your post has me pumped to give it some more playtime, however, as I seem to have only scratched the surface!

The problem with this game is it's so. freaking. repetitive! Almost all enemies are identical, even the bosses. The sound people seem to have given up halfway as well, since you hardly hear anything. It's bizarre.

I will admit watching people getting dismembered, in cinematic angles with super slow-mo no less!, was pretty cool. But that was the best part, really.

Just though I'd post a link to this (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/showthread.php?p=159134) for anyone interested in picking up this game.

yes yes yes. i bought this game when it came out and though it had a couple camera issues it was one of the few great games I played last year. A descent story, solid controls and tons of limb chopping gore. If you can't bring yourself to buy it at least rent it.. its worth it.

Yes. I got this on day one and loved every second of it. I couldn't put it down.

Funny thing, because the problems are obvious...but it's so fun they don't matter. Think about how awesome the game could be if everything was tweaked to perfection.

Funny enough - i just finished this one today. That final siege was really amazing, but the final boss sucked incredibly bad, and the ending was weak as hell. It's a another game (much like Farcry 2) where the pre-launch trailers do a MUCH better job of setting up the narrative than the game itself does. Those Brian Blessed narrated trailers from just before launch, where he was a grizzled warrior talking about marching into battle with Skarin, were awesome. In the actual game you get a small chunk at the beginning, and a small chunk at the end, and neither really gels well or makes a hell of a lot of sense within the context of the game.

Also there's the sound bugs - though to be fair i recall reading somewhere that there was some kind of snafu during the replication process and the disc that wound up getting pressed wasn't the final sound mix (the audio wasn't complete and the mix wasn't sweetened or something).

I thought this wasn't that much overlooked or under appreciated. But the reviews gave this 5 to 7's, which coupled with talk of repetition and some other issues put me off.

Ditto, I'm on the 2nd siege and stopped there, just got busy and never made time for it. Fun romp of a game though.

It was far from the most perfect game, but I had a lot of fun playing it and completed it in a good weekend romp. Solid rental.

It wasn't a 'great' game, but it was good mindless fun.

I played through this game and really enjoyed it. There were a few times I felt that it was somewhat repetitive but for the most part it was a fun play through. It was one of those games that you basically know what your going to get and you just go with it because it is fun. Sorta like a popcorn movie.

The final boss battle on the Hard level is utter crap...fun game until that final fight. Its like they dont want to give you the achievement even though you made it all the way to the end. Check my 360 profile and see...I played the hell out of it. Im not sure you can change difficulty either mid game.....

I was really looking forward to this, I love hack 'em ups, but it left me cold. Just couldn't find the desire to keep playing. Conan, on the other hand, was awesome, despite being a much more linear and traditional experience.

Hahaha this has been done to DEATH now:)
We have like maybe 3 threads of love for this and uncountable mentions. Hahahaha. No one can escape the Viking now!
Repeated from the hundreds of other posts and many threads.
Most excellent game, especially if you did not expect much...which is now impossible because of the hundreds of threads I already mentioned.
Viking...most loved game of Cog.

There's a reason Viking was the singular game that popped into my brain when I tried to think of an overlooked 360 title. Aside from maybe Lost Odyssey or one of the other JRPGs that came out from Square last year, I can't think of anything that flopped as hard as Viking yet was so fun to play, despite its obvious limitations.

Hmm. This write up sold one more Viking game!

For the PS3, though.

EDIT: Found it for the 360, and for a total of $3.71. Woo hoo!

Well I have finally gotten into the game and I like it so far. Definitely not a game you want to listen to reviewers on. I'm not even sure which game they played. Too bad reviews are not based on simply having fun.

Well I have finally gotten into the game and I like it so far. Definitely not a game you want to listen to reviewers on. I'm not even sure which game they played. Too bad reviews are not based on simply having fun.Exactly. It does tend to get mired down in some repetition by the latter stages of the game but who cares when what you're doing is so fun!

And that's why I rarely go by review scores these days. Sometimes the reviews themselves are fine, sometimes they're not, but review scores alone are an awful barometer of games these days. I mean, that's why hearing what the community is playing is so important to me as I trust the reactions of common folk like me (even if it's a matter of 'this is a $20 game being sold for $60' kind of argument) over most reviewers in their lofty ivory peaks any day.
