Anyone else getting one? I preordered on day one; rather, I should say, wife ordered me one for the b-day. I'm quite stoked. I've wanted an iPhone for a while, but T-Mobile has been so damned good to me I would feel bad switching. Finally, I get a badass phone.
Too bad T-Mo doesn't have 3G in Montgomery, and doesn't even have it on the drawing board at the moment. (I've got an inside source)

I'm going to get one of these when they come out in the UK "sometime this year". I just like the concept of no longer having to sync to the desktop like I have to do with my WinMo device - Activesync is the biggest pile of shit ever.

I would love to get one, but I'm a Sprint user. So I'll be using WinMo phones for a while still. Currently I've got the HTC Titan/Mogul which is kind of slow and I really need an upgrade. I'm looking at getting the newer HTC Touch Diamond Pro which should have Android ported to it by the homebrew community.
I'm not in love with Sprint's service or anything, but the deal I have through Sprint is just too good to walk away from.

You are correct. ActiveSync is quite an annoyance. It is the reason why I pay for a single user exchange server. Push email is a godsend. Also its amazing adding a new contact into outlook on my computer and having it just instantly show up in my phone. It gives me the warm fuzzies.

Sprint has their first Android handset coming by early 2009, just FYI.
I'm on the Android train, I'll have a G1 as soon as T-mo can get it to me.

I've still got another year on my Verizon contract, but when that's up, I'll definitely be picking up an Android phone. By then, the kinks will be mostly worked out, there will be multiple available handsets for me to choose from, and I won't have to go through the hassle of leaving a contract.
I want one but I get spotty coverage from T-Mobile. I bounce between their tower and the Cingular tower. It works fine for the most part but I do not get fast 'internet' speeds when it goes into Cingular coverage.

What part of the country are you in? I will admit that in a few places I've been station, service hasn't been great. But my home (Atlanta) and where I'm stationed now (Montgomery, AL) the service is fantastic.
The main reason I stay with t-mobile is the customer service; they've helped me through a lot, from correcting bill errors to telling me how I can abuse their system and get a free phone before my normal time. :) Plus, when there is a note on your account that says 6 year customer, that apparently means something.

No point in having a stupid Star Wars campout.

Ah yeah I remember now, pre-orders. Apple & AT&T didn't do that for the iPhone 3G...thus there were lines. I got to the store at 10pm the night before and was #2 in line.

It is on a truck and "out for delivery" at the moment; would be nice if they showed up in the next hour so I can snag it before work, but i doubt that. I'll certainly touch on it at the next show; I imagine I can weasel it in as being game related somehow. :)

Normally I just have stuff delivered to me at work, but T-Mo automatically ships it to your billing address.

That's something I was curious about. I've read conflicting reports regarding the G1 requiring 3G service in order to operate in any way or just suggesting it. I live in Vermont where 3G is nonexistant (and neither T-Mobile or AT&T are here), and I was considering ordering an unlocked G1 at some point, but don't know if I'll be able to use it. I'm using an unlocked iPhone here and don't have a data plan with it, I only grab data over WiFi.

Time will tell, I have not seen anything in depth on what sort of modem[s] are inside. I paid a rather high premium for my 8830 world to get every modem under the sun included, so I am never without a satellite to use. It would royally suck to get something like the G1, and not have access to the web.
I hope it works, these little buggers are a nerdgasm with a screen.

Bluetooth is only for headsets at the moment. It does do USB mass storage for file transfers, though.

This Wing must be a battery hog for you too. I think the main reason I jumped is cause I just know even more cooler stuff will be released in due time. And it still beats the Wing even if it isn't as feature laden hardware wise.
But I know it has the motion sensors and someone could possibly make a version that works the iphone does. Turn it way and bam. No sliding. Does the touch screen they have support multitouch? I mean in future updates could someone make that work as well?

No multitouch on the G1, which is probably its greatest shortcoming. The browser is surprisingly usable all the same, though. I'm actually finding the scrollball far more useful than I thought I would.

It has a capacitive touchscreen (same as the iPhone), so in theory someone could cook up something on the software side to do multitouch.

If someone were to make changes to the OS, I wouldn't mind someone bringing in some multitouch. I'm sure what android has now will suffice, but still pinch and stuff seems quicker. Also since the device has a accelerometer, someone can set up automatically when you rotate the phone the screen flips. I also heard it doesn't capture video out the back. If it's possible to get that working too it would be nice.
App wise though, it's just so much that could be done. I've seen some of the apps that were in the contest. A few of them are just pretty cool for day to day stuff. A lot of it was focused on google maps. I haven't taken the time to get my creative juices flowing on what would be cool. I can't develop so it would probably be a waste to focus on that. Although once I have it in hand who knows what I'll find or think up.

Wondering when the market place is going to get an update. From what I've been able to find online, pparently a few apps (like a video player) were using 'old' developer keys and had to be resigned for the official launch and haven't made their way back to the market yet. Only things that have gone live today are the T-Mo Hotspot Connect app and a Bank of America app.

Well, I mean, WiFi is going to be lower latency than a 3G network, so as far as the network connection itself goes, it's not going to be any snappier.

I think the 'Print' style one was very usable, at least from the look of it. Flowed nicely between segments etc... Does anyone know how Android connects to the UI? Is it an X-Windows style system, or is it more integrated between the UI and back end like MS's offerings?

It's definitely one of the cleanest, but it mistakes pretty for usable. It looks just like the name suggests - like a layed out, printed page. I don't see that as being a particularly useful computing metaphor, though.
Usable is something like Android's notification area. It's an omnipresent, consistent way of presenting information. I'm really of the opinion that it's probably the biggest usability win of the entire system.

The problem with Business is it probably is it would drain the battery. It's very busy. I think it's very usable however. Like instead of the ticker constantly, maybe a RSS Feed that just updates from time to time. Same for the pictures. Shrink the text. Make better use of space.

So far no real complaints, though (like has been said in all the reviews) an on-screen keyboard would have been nice, so that you don't HAVE to open to phone to reply "okay" when the wife asks you to pick something up on the way home. Ditto with the battery life; not terrible, but could stand some improvement.

I think my only complaint so far, is the battery life does suck ass. Also the sliding setup is crappy. Doesn't feel solid. My top screen makes a creaking noise when I touch it anywhere on the left hand side. In recent memory, the design has to be their biggest dud. It's not a brick but at least that brick was solid.

If i don't use data features, it gets about the same life as my old motorolla RIZR. data drains battery on any phone; the more i get used to the phone the less of an issue i have with the batttery. curious if a lot of early complaints are coming from people (like me) who haven't used a smartphone before. Also, dowloading apps is a real battery killer. Now that I'm not doing rampant downloading, and have learned to moderate my data, things are much better for me. Of course, I'm not on a 3G network yet. So there is that...
Also, rifter, let us know how sdcaring the GF goes. I highly recommend recording your voice as an mp3. Something like, Ksweetheart, the man about to walk in the door isn't me. It is a clone, and it is going to try to kill you. Don't let on that you know." And play it just before you walk in. That is what I should have done.

I mean, even when I use data fairly heavily on a night out, I haven't succeeded in burning more than about half the battery before I get somewhere I can charge it. I've taken to leaving the AC adapter plugged up at work and carrying the USB cable in my bag with my laptop.

My friend's does the same thing as mine. If Tmobile does send me another phone since I also ordered one online before picking one up at the store, I might check it before sending it back. Basically get a sense of if my phone IS problematic. I'm thinking about getting insurance, just in case down the line I need it replaced. Matter of fact, I might just stop by another T-Mobile and check the demo model. I didn't notice one way or another last time I was in the store.

If anyone is interested in some alternate G1 wallpapers, I have cropped and resized 12 pictures (so far) for use. I created a pictures/wallpaper directory to put them in, but quite honestly, you put a picture ANYWHERE on your SD card, and it will let you use it.
For some reason, these images are prompted to crop. If you drag it to the edge, it grabs the entire image. They are resized to 640x480, which I have read is the proper size for the wallpaper. So, it is ONE minor wrinkle when setting custom wallpapers.
Anyhow, go here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/ryfter/sets/72157608461405795/) to see my wallpapers. I have changed the copyright on them all, and moved them to non-commercial, creative commons. So, anyone can use them. :-)

I use one "pane" as a blank wallpaper pane, and keep my phone-related apps (messaging, contacts, dialer) on the middle pane, with the far right pane being my "data apps" pane. Though most stuff doesn't make it to shortcut status; i like tidy desktops.
However, my wallpaper is cropped so that it my cat only show up in the far left pane, my "wallpaper" pane. He vanishes if you slide to the other two. Landscape mode, of course, breaks this.
Also, the Orientation app is really nice. The detailed data you can get from GPS mode that way is interesting. Grab it if you want a neat toy. Plus, it has a compass that works without GPS being on.

I'm so out of the fancy phone loop; I bought an LG chocolate two years ago, and while not a dud, exactly, it's not a terribly impressive piece of machinery. Having this style of an "open source" phone would be awesome though - but I can't deny that in my area, Verizon's coverage is quite simply fantastic. Does anyone know if there are any rumblings of an Android phone coming for Verizon? Or does their tendency to be completely anal about their network make such a flexible phone unlikely?

Hell, I am a tmobile customer, and our last smartphone, was the friggin Wing. They give us 1 smart phone like every 3 or 4 years. :-(
As for Verizon, who knows. They have some decent stuff, but they seem to really like blackberries.
Just, don't call customer support. Verizon is jacking around their agents, so if you call, don't expect good service, unless it is simple.

The current G1, however, isn't compatible with CDMA networks (Verizon, Sprint), so even if you can unlock the thing it'll only be for GSM (AT&T, T-Mobile, my shitty Unicel network...).

Not just this. But Android and G-1 are the product of the Open Handset Alliance. If they keep things within there group, there are the only operators having native support.
* China Mobile
* KDDI Corporation
* NTT DoCoMo
* Sprint Nextel (Not really really loving android so says Dan Hesse.) (http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/10/25/dan-hesse-sez-android-not-yet-good-enough-for-sprint-brand/)
* T-Mobile
* Telecom Italia
* Telefónica
Unlocking is already happening but that doesn't get you into the store or a gmail account yet. The marriage with the gmail accounts is nice too.
Again based on the partners next handsets are coming different companies.
* HTC
* LG
* Motorola
* Samsung Electronics
I know Motorola is next but LG and Samsung say Q3 2009. I actually think I have the scoop on some of this. Just by noticing stuff. I'll share some screen shots and let you be the judge.
Also ebay is a software partner. I hope this includes half. I wish the savvy shopper scanners also price checked half. For books, it's almost always the best bet.
T-Mobile America probably feel like big shots for the first time. I can't think of having any product with any hype value that AT&T wasn't ready to step on. Feels like right now the only response is, "Well, we still have the Iphone."

In all honesty, I've been shocked at how good T-mo's EDGE network is. Having lived with somebody with an iPhone, EDGE is basically worthless on AT&T's network here. I just spent an hour and a half waiting in line to vote and EDGE was perfectly fine for browsing to keep myself occupied during that time.

I agree. I wouldn't be surprised to see the ability to install apps to the SD card in a future OS update, however. Google has said flat out that the OS is far from complete.

I've actually been using EDGE fairly heavily when I'm out around town. I have a neanderthal friend who has no Wifi at his house, so it gets used there as well as when riding in a car with others and the like. It's good enough that I can even watch Youtube videos and the like over EDGE with minimal wait. AT&T's EDGE network here is so bad that even simple web browsing is basically impossible.

It's about 4 of us with G-1s and a few still waiting. I think Verizon is more so trying to pimp the Blackberry Storm. G-1 is being given marketing like the iphone almost. It's the biggest phone launch since then and Verizon probably thought they deserved that. Instead of smearing, they should actually get to marketing the Storm. To me, I just see another blackberry. Nothing special. <shrug>
3G and internal memory are about the only ones that can't be fixed by developers.
Couldn't the internal memory "issue" be rerouted to the SD card? I see no reason why the SD card can't run apps. Maybe I got it wrong but I thought it was possible with the wing and winmo. So it seems possible, just a software issue.
I'm still curious about turning the camera into one that can do more than stills, as in video. I'm sure the stills itself can also be handled better with proper software.
Someone ripped one up (http://androidcommunity.com/t-mobile-g1-gets-dissected-20081031/), so hopefully people can learn a little more about the hardware. I also expect an exchange program sooner than later. Sidenote, why aren't a picasa(photos) and google office apps made/linked to the gmail counter parts? What's up with that?!

I killed my Wing over 4th of July, and at that point, I didn't know of a way to put apps on the SD card, they used internal memory, but it had almost NO internal memory. The G1 is like a vista, compared to the Wing.

At work it found me to the parking space. :)
I can get 8m accuracy pretty damn quickly here, dropping to 3m if I hold still a second. While traveling, it usually stays within 3m-8m. (Traveling by car, that is)
In the apartment it sometimes has a little trouble, occasionally telling me I'm in the unit next door. But most of the time it will even be able to tell me which end of the apartment I'm at fairly quick.

Geocaching. Those are objects hidden in the real world. The basic premise is you go to Geocaching.com, search for your location, and find a nearby cache. Then, you program the cache in to the DPS device of your choice (your G1, for instance) and go find it. Sign the logbook and, if you would like, take a trinket from the cache and leave a new trinket. (Note: not all caches are big enough to support swag)
I know this requires going outdoors, but it is actually a lot of fun. I spent my saturday crawling in a storm drain under a Costco parking lot, tramping about in the woods of a local park, sulking around lightposts in a shopping center, and searching in treestumps. It thrives in both urban and rural areas. Best experienced with two or three friends who are just as crazy as you.
A better explanation can be found here (http://www.geocaching.com/about/history.aspx).
A handful of geocaching assistant apps are in development for Android. However, none of them are ready for beta yet. One is pretty close, though. Probably within a couple of weeks. Currently, I create a txt file with the GPS locations of a variety of nearby caches. Open the text file on the G1, copy the address, open maps, paste go to directions. Use "my location" for the start, and paste the cache location. Then get route. It works really well because it will map the quickest road route that leads you close to the cache, and then you're on your own on foot to get to the actual location.

Side note, I don't remember when the last time I had to charge those controllers. Well done Sony. And one in my laptop bags, that belongs to my external HDD. So.... you might be out of luck, iPhonians. I've been having a look at a smartphone/touchscreen phone, and to be honest I havent seen a phone that can convincingly out iPhone the iPhone. Right now, the iPhone pushes the boundrieds in what they do. Remember, an iPhone is not a smart phone, and Apple has done their best to avoid that monkier. I think they call it a multimedia phone or something like that.
So, right now, the G1 is playing catch up to the iPhone. I believe, that in the future, the Android platform will begin PUSHING features on the iPhone, as people realize Apple is retarded for not having them (Cut and Paste). You will also find them HAVING to loosen things up, or they will start loosing market share... Blocking flash, will end up being a BIG no-no. If they don't accept it, the Android platform will shut down the iPhone platform, for good. Just the nature of the iPhone, and how it has been established, means they must have Flash, and not allowing it is not a real option for them.
At least, that is MY opinion.

My thing is that so long as these data plans are so limited, and going over your bandwidth cap is so costly, I do not want flash. Flash is why it is not uncommon to fine sites that load with as much as 10 MB of content. You also need to take into account viewing optimization, youtube is 640x480, most phone screens are 320X240, generous at 480 X 320. Tiny, barely recognizeable video when compressed like that.

But not all carriers offer unlimited plans, let alone affordable ones. The T Mobile G1 is on a 1 Gig cap I beleive. Even so called unlimited plans have effective caps. I have seen articles where testers have seen AT&T's near the 9 Gig mark. Double check what their use of unlimited means as well. I cannot think of one that is unlimited with 3G speeds for example, you will get throttled.

Nope. They said 1GB and rescinded that decision almost the next day. They are looking into during the process. So most likely they are looking into how bad people get with it first I assume.

I just played with two point touch. You can do it by putting a icon on the screen. Then holding down on it as to trash. Then you can use another finger on the screen to move it. Both fingers will act like a magnet pushing and pulling the icon.
Two way touch shouldn't be held back like this. It's like someone having a patent on the screens themselves.
Then there is this (http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/11/22/g1-multi-touch-a-reality-integrated-headphone-jack-still-just-a/).

I think the phone itself is doing really well; however, I think (in the end) Android will fail. Or, at least, be crippled. The average "Joe User" doesn't get what makes Android special. They don't want an open marketplace. They want a heavily moderated market with hand-picked, high quality apps so they don't have to sort through the trash. Reading app reviews on the android market is like reading the worst internet message boards. Really, really frustrating. The star rating system is completely broken by this.
Also, in the defense of Joe User, there are a lot of devs out there putting loads and loads of shit on the market. A "weekly wallpaper" app that the dev puts out EVERY WEEK and is just a link to his page in the browser is not valid, and there really needs to be a way to shut that kind of crap down. Some real gems out there (picsay, compass, solitare, pictoral, fbook) that I use every day, but a lot of crap. And while I don't mind sifting the gems from the crap, I don't think Joe User wants to or has the time, and in the end it might kill the platform.
However, in defense of Android, this is the first handset. I think it might give devs the push to start developing stuff that might not be ready for the G1, but will be by the time other handsets get out there. I see a lot of potential in a few things (Barcode Beasties and Parallel Kingdom, in particular) that just need a lot more time in development.
All in all, being a tech-savvy person it is the phone to have. But it isn't for Joe User, yet. And Joe User is the guy you need to sell it to if you want to make a profit.

I generally follow Android Community (http://androidcommunity.com/) off and on.
I subscribe to that rss.

I disagree. Tmobile for one is marketing it pretty good. HTC has recently raised their shipped expectations.

I agree with many of your statements but they are all revolving around the app marketplace. People get bored, they like toying with their phone when they have down time (like a boring ass meeting) and the people that I've seen with the G1 and that I've talked to are in absolutely love with the phone.
I'm pretty involved with T-Mobile here in Florida and they are making bank on the G1. Availability of it was even expanded to Wal-Mart, where it continues to sell out. I don't believe there will be a near-end to Android.
This is especially so when the Samsung version comes out, because I know a great # of people that won't get the G1 because of its slide out screen & the keyboard it has.

After rereading my last post, I was a bit harsh. My frustration with the app store just needed an outlet, I suppose. However, they really need to beef up the store. Continually downrated app makers need some kind of measure to prevent them from flooding the market with useless, buggy apps. A comment rating system needs to go in place to help negate the useless comments. The app market is the reason for this phone; the stock features alone do no warrent the price tag, in my book.
I do love my G1, and am quite happy to be a day-one user. There are just key features (google docs, mymaps) that I think are foolish to have left out, and some design decisions (crappy, non adjustable camera and no audio jack) that are mistakes that will probably be fixed elsewhere. Looking forward to the next version of this phone, will certainly pick it up.

Voodoo is about right with the fun of the phone is being able to play with so much. I know people who want android for the sake of it being Google. It's new and fresh. HTC just put it on a shabby hardware. The G1 doesn't seem to fit all the Touch phones they released this gen. Motorola, when ever they get back on there feet, plans to release a full line up of phones. Samsung and LG are also coming out sometime this year.
I understand about the store though. It's a little too lenient. But the more I read about Iphone's app store, theirs seems to rigid. I'm hoping that Google do a little bit more in the way of quality. I know soon the app store will start putting a price on some apps, and I'd like to think that's what some of the real developers are waiting for. Hopefully they do fix the rating system. I saw this somewhere, "Write something smart." Tell them to not be idiots and hope they conform on there own. I'm expecting that exchange support everyone wants to hit soon. Help it be the smart phone is should be.
Google themselves need to put the Google Office on phones already. It seems like a big flaw. I mean they didn't even bother to put Google Notebook on the phone. What is up with that.

Another note: the call quality on this phone is amazing. Maybe my old phone was shitty or something, but I am really impressed with how nice and clear the calls are.

Seriously, this is a HUGE flaw. Not having any office apps is just foolish.

Call quality seems to be about the same as my Motorola RIZR. I do like that (unlike the RIZR) the loud ringer setting is actually loud. I pretty much had to sleep with the RIZR on my ear to be able to have the alarm on it wake me. Speaker phone quality is also pretty good. Needs to output a little louder to the headset, though.
Looking forward to getting my audio adapter. My friend just got her G1 today (white, the bitch) and it came with the audio adapter. She says it works great, so that's a good sign.

The preorder site that went live a week or two before launch on tmobile.com
Wasn't that the only place to get it at launch?

Hm... can't decide how I feel about Opera. Navigation is kinda clumsy compared to Google's browser, but god is it FAST.

Anyone thinking about writing apps for this puppy? I'm not terribly familiar with java, but I just download Eclipse and went through the Hello, World tutorial. Might be alright; not terribly hard. I guess we'll see. Trying to come up with a simple, useful app to try for my first.

It would be nice if it was an app that let you see your friendlist. who's on and what not.

Negative. Unfortunately. This is a big drawbag; would be super helpful when geocaching. Rumor is that this is coming in a future update.

Anyone use AndNav yet? I tried it out the other day, and when it works, it's nice. I haven't tried the new update yet, but hopefully that fixes the random 'force close' bug. The only thing I didn't like (or couldn't get working correctly) was that the directions didn't auto-refresh. If I selected 'Auto-follow' I can't search for a location. I'm probably doing it wrong. I really like this phone.
EDIT: Or maybe I need AndNav2 :)

I am not familiar with that app.
The only apps on my front page, or aSettings and QSearch. Oh, and Opera Mini, in case it can open something, that browser can not. I also got K-9 email last night. Lots of good reviews, on it.

Alien Blood Bath is an interesting proof of concept; the controls need to be tightened up, as do graphics. But it showed me that a side-scroller could really steal some time if done right.
Bartender is great when friday night rolls around, and the wife and I are trying to figure out what drinks to make for the weekend. Great app, great interface. Essential.
I think Bender is the best file-management app out there. Simple, useful, and awesome.
Bubble is perfect. Everyone should have Bubble.
Coloroid gets a fair bit of play time for me; the larger sizes boards are pretty interesting.
fBook works well for Facebook users; far better than their normal page.
Gmote I can't stress enough. Simply great.
Picsay and Pictorial are in my most-used apps, period. Great, great programs.
Scrambled Net provided a bit of fun, but it is probably about to vanish to make room for new stuff.
Sky Map is nerd-tastic; sadly it has been pretty cloudy in my area as of late and so I can't put it to enough use.
Slide Puzzle = Win.
Solitaire is very well put together, and often used to kill time at work.
WeatherBug is my weather app of choice; though I find it all boils down to preference on this one, they're all similar.
Yeah, that's my rundown.

Yikes. Well, I'm not a developer. I think in January or February, the market will be open to priced items.
