Question 1: Mount and Blade for 75% off. Worth it?
Question 2: Penumbra complete for $18. Worth it?

Buy Mount and Blade now. The game itself is great, and there are a ton of amazing mods for it too. I never played Penumbra, though.

I've had the demo for Mount and Blade sitting on my laptops hard drive for the longest time now. I figured now was a good time to install it and give it a whirl, since if I liked it, I could pick it up on the cheap.

Played through the tutorial and could tell I would like this game. Am downloading from Steam now, along with some graphical mods. Sweet.

Yeah, I originally bought Mount & Blade for $11 in beta, and it was a steal.

I might actually throw $7.50 more at it, just because the game really deserves good sales numbers.

So yes, if the look of the game interests you at all, pick it up. It's really good.

Well I'll buy Mount and Blade, but I can't even download all the games I've bought on Steam since the post Christmass sale within the next moth (starting today) and next month's not looking like it will see them all either...

So I'll hold off on Penumbra for now.

Also DOW: Soulstorm is now $7.50 (down from $30.) Don't know if it's timed, but it seems to be for the sole purpose of pissing off those who bought it to get into the DOW II beta a week early.

M&B for 7.50 is a steal. Honestly, I love the game and still play it. Its fun, its great for long campaigns, or just to screw around with seeing how many people you can lance in a bowling style!

And yeah, the mods make it even better. There's a Star Wars Mod that throws in force Push, blasters, lightsabers. It's not the most polished, but it is awesome at times.

So I picked up M&B, and all I can say so far is whomeever came up with that mouselook scheme needs to be shot out of a cannon. At a brick wall.

Seriously, not having the mouse pointer lock to the window, makes a windowed option completely useless.

Also, the fact that you can't lock your view to your horse direction makes horsefighting a pain.

Honestly i cracked the demo of the game to see if it was worth buying and had a hell of a time with it. It's ended up on my "mean to buy" list but i didn't really feel it was worth the full price. When it first came on steam i was tempted beacuse steam makes everything better but i had other things to buy on my rather tight game budget.... so as soon as i saw the sale i picked it up. While i wasn't sure about the £30 price tag for £8 there is no question about buying the thing it's worth well more than that

Horse combat versus opponents on foot is all about holding your weapon to the side and swinging just as the enemy passes by. After the hit, ride away and swing wheel around for another pass. The harrying attack on horseback isn't very chivalrous, but it's effective. (Besides, I figure my lordly character wouldn't deign to fight foot peasants honorably anyway.)

Fuck honor.

Practicality all the way.

Before I got my horse (I had one, but lost it due to being captured) I was just shooting people from afar with my bow and now that I'm back in the game with horses, it's beheading people all the way. Unless they're riding away from me, then I shoot them in the back with arrows.

You really have to play the tutorial to help you get the hang of horse combat...while getting close, it helps (me, at least) to look down while riding past with my sword to the side.

Worst comes to worst, you can ram 'em with your horse ;)

In my opinion, the easiest horse combat is probably with a spear or lance. Don't click to attack, when you're going fast enough the point will dip like you're jousting. Just aim the point at someone's head as you go by and you'll hit for "couched lance damage." Keep going, swing around and repeat. It works extra well if you've got a horse that can charge well, and just knock over your target's buddies as you head through. It takes a little bit of practice, but it is really, really satisfying and packs a big punch.

Man I love this game. Just spent the last two or three hours playing. I competed in and won my first tournament which was a lot of fun...except the bugs where the other rider on a horse will run into a wall and stop completely. Then I'll do the same by accident and get stuck...that pisses me off.

Otherwise, love it.

I'm not sure WHAT to do though other than build up my renown. I've done a castle siege with a Khan, but accidentally ditched his army and now him AND his enemies hate me; so, I'm basically just hanging out with the Nords and hoping they'll accept me into their society and I can do some more castle sieging(?) with them.

I sucked at horse combat at first but at one point it just clicked and running people down with a sword is now the most effective form of fighting i can do. Next come lancing people but i normally use that for other people on horses.

I freaking LOOOOVE this game. This is the first game in a long time that's hitting me with that "itch". I just want to go home and play. haha.

Brass, I'm not sure how you're doing what you're doing, but that doesn't seem to work for me.
What DOES work for me is.. basically I use 2 different attach methods...
Horse to Infantry, i use my spear, and before I reach someone, I hold in the mouse button, then release right before my horse gets to them. Either I take thier head off, or the horse knocks them down.
Horse to Horse, I use my Bastard Sword to one side or another. So far, so good.
One thing I NEVER do on horseback is stop moving. You stop moving on a horse and you're dead.

Now... to get my army bigger than 45......

Brass, I'm not sure how you're doing what you're doing, but that doesn't seem to work for me.

It took me a while to get it down, but you just have to be going fast enough and keep the tip of the spear lined up on the guy you want to hit. Try to go straight at them until you're used to it, because the point goes out of line as you steer. Also, I've got a tournament jousting lance, so the extra reach might be making it easier (plus it's blunt, so I knock people out and make lots of extra money off of prisoners). Clicking to do a normal thrust attack certainly works fine.. but couched damage makes a really satisfying noise and takes people down quicker!

My army in my newest game is still only 9 strong.. all of them named characters. I think this is the most I can keep together without personality conflict. I've got them all outfitted and leveled up well enough at this point that we can consistently take down groups of sea raiders twice our size without anyone being silly and getting knocked out. A few more good sets of armor and level ups and I'll start recruiting arrow fodder, but the Band of Brothers approach has been a fun way to start. It's nice to have a solid core group that can't die.

Heretic Machine

See, I use my spear for horse-to-horse combat because of it's reach; if nothing else, I can kill the horse my enemy is riding on, and then pick them off from the ground. When I'm on my horse and fighting infantry, I use a sword, slashing side-to-side. Then again, horse-to-horse combat gives me problems, especially when there are a lot of archers.

Still, I'm only like lvl 10 or so. I haven't been having much luck running a mercenary crew, as the dumb asses tend to get pwned while I take out the entire enemy force.

Panthera

I'm all about the command in this game. The vast majority of kills will be from my little army, as I massively increase my leadership skill to get as many as I can and training skill to get the new ones up to speed quickly. In battles, I take time to carefully manage the position of my infantry and archers, then have the cavalry follow me to counter-charge their cavalry, guard the flanks, or swing around and ride into their archers.

Tee Hee.

BrassGecko, I think the problem is the weapon I'm using. Apparently not all polearms do it. I was in a tournament and was given a tournament or training lance, and that was doing like 90 damage at full speed without me swinging.
My actual weapon right now is a spear, and it seems to only work when I "swing".

Also... apparently the Lord of a castle gets a bit pissed off when the King gives you a fiefdom in his territory. I'm permanently banned from that Lord's castle now. haha.

But anyway, how the hell do I capture Lords and the like? In an epic battle where I was outnumbered 73:250-some, I "slew" the King and a Lord and I didn't get to capture them. They always escape :( Do I need to stand over them when I kill them?

The combat in this game (out on a battlefield) is something special. It has a fluid, pure feeling to it that I really haven't seen anywhere outside of a simulator game. To go as far as to say this is the damn near the most perfect balance between an RPG and a simulator ever, would sell Mount and Blade short. It's simply outstanding.

Siege battles have much room for improvement still.

Khrymsyn
02-07-2009, 09:26 PM
yeah, speaking of sieges... any hints?

I can take on other lords with 2-1 odds, and be pretty successful... but when I outnumber the castle I'm trying to take, I get slaughtered. When I'm defending a base and outnumber the attackers... I get slaughtered...
just have no clue how to play either side of the siege.

My armies are usually pretty heavy on sharpshooter crossbowmen and nord infantry. On defense, I just stay to one side of the spot they have to pile in through and hack at people while my heavy infantry and well-armored named characters take the brunt of the attacks. That usually stops them right there, I've held my castle against 180-some guys with about 70 of my own. On offense, my guys seem to do just fine on their own. I don't usually issue any orders, I just follow the infantry up the ramp and they take care of a lot of it before I get there. I think well leveled up heavy infantry and some good archers are the important thing.

I also have some very high surgery, first aid and wound treatment skills within my party, so if there's a break in the fighting my army is back to good strength relatively fast.

My latest exploit proves that quality beats quantity hugely in this game. I'm allied with the Nords, and own a castle next to the Swadian city of Suno. All the other castles around Suno are also in non-Swadian hands. I decided to see how well 66 (my party size limit) of my best troops would do at taking the city.

My army:
1 Me, with very good armor, a good quality shield and an excellent sword
8 named characters with brigandines and assorted good swords
20 Nord Huscarls
7 Nord Veterans
11 Nord Warriors
1 Swadian Knight
1 Vaegir Guard
10 Rhodok Sharpshooters
2 Swadian Sharpshooters
5 Swadian Crossbowmen

Their army:
1 Lord
7 Swadian Men-at-Arms
1 Swadian Sergeant
17 Swadian Infantry
58 Swadian Footmen
36 Swadian Militia
10 Swadian Recruits
96 Swadian Crossbowmen
79 Swadian Skirmishers

The total: 66 vs 305.

Several fights later, I took the city, with 39 guys still standing. Outside the wall, I lost two guys and had one wounded, while killing 49 and wounding 4. The big fight for the wall saw me lose 25 dead and 28 wounded while killing 236. The fights in the street and for the keep were just cleanup after that, even though it was mostly just me and some of the named characters left on my side. It was a really brutal, really fun fight, and there were moments when I was surprised to find I was still standing.

As a bonus, I replenished my numbers entirely with freed prisoners from the Suno city cells.

The Moral of the Story: Level your units!

Update: The Nord king decided to give the city to someone else. I told him that it was mine, thank you, and I was no longer part of his kingdom. So now I've got a city, a castle, four towns and roughly 200 troops, located more or less at the border of three of the four kingdoms, and various people are pissed at me. This should be good.

Swadians are no match for those nords on foot...I'd know we just got wasted by them most of my garrison was Rhodok but with a stron swadian presence...I lost EVERYTHING..MY CASTLE..MY VILLAGE...everything. Well, except my primary party and my fabulous wealth I still have retained I guess. They struck with a force of 500+...there was nothing I could do I was only able to claim about 180 of them.

Up your rep with who you want to be a vasle for (do there quests kill the people they dislike and so on) and you can ask the king to take you on at which point you'll get a village... not sure if you just get given a castle at some point or you have to become well liked enough to be rewarded one when you take it for your king. The easiest way to up your rep i've found is to get taken on for a campaign (asking lords if you can do anything for them sometimes show this... i think) where you become in the paid employ of that nation but not a full vassel.

Honestly in my main game i just got so pissed off with never been given the castles i was taking that i opted to keep one and started my own nation!

Two ways:

1) Without being vassaled to any nation, take a castle. It'll be all yours, but the problem is, everyone will hate you, and you'll have no other nation to back you meaning you're on your own defending your holdings against hostile nations on all sides.

2) There's a mod that actually lets you create a proper nation of your own, but I don't really know much about it, a friend showed it to me.
