So I don't know if anyone remembers about a month ago but I had made a post on EvAv about asking for clarification or ideas for a speech I was doing in my new Speech class. It was for a simple 2 minute introductory speech explaining who I wanted to be for 24 hours and what I would do during those 24 hours. To make a long story short, I ended up picking Shigeru Miyamoto and I fucking rocked the speech. I got an A on it and the teacher is hella nit-picky when it comes to speeches, she used to teach at University of Florida which is no joke.

Well now we have another speech due. It's now 5 to 7 minutes long and it has to be an informative speech. It has be to based on something that you have to at least have a little knowledge on so you can be somewhat informative. My major is in Computers and I'm obviously huge into video games so I'm kind of torn between the two. On the one side, I have many ideas relating to video games. I could maybe inform my audience on the timeline of video games or maybe I could inform the controversies relating to video games such as sex and violence and addiction. On the other side with Computers, I could inform my audience of the lifestyles of PC gaming competition, which I've done before. I could also explain to them maybe the hardware inside a computer so they could be a wiser consumer in the future.

If you guys have any ideas that I haven't come up with, that would be awesome. Thanks to this class I really do not fear public speech as much so I have no worries about this speaking part of this speech but I want a topic that I can really sink my teeth into, much like I did with Shigeru Miyamoto, and get another amazing A.

Thanks in advance for your ideas.

I think the PC hardware one is a good idea, as long as you can keep it simple enough for those less knowledgable to understand. You don't want to pick anything too hardcore, or the teacher may get confused on the subject alone which is a detriment to them grading your actual performance.

Ya if I go into nanometers for processors and latencies for RAM I think peoples' heads would explode. Deep down I would feel more comfortable doing something Video game related but I'm afraid that if I do another speech related to VG's, that I would lose my audience and my audience is also something I need to take into consideration for this speech.

Even though there are about 4 people other than me in the class that either play WoW or are console gamers.

Bump for good measure.

I think your suggestion of competitive gaming is a great idea. You could talk a little about where competitive gaming came from, how popular it is, televised competitions, and Korean Starcraft tournaments, working in some of your own experiences.

Be sure to emphasize the human element: the people who compete and why they do it. It's always better to get a point across through anecdotes than by saying it outright, so find some good stories. I caught a little of King of Kong on G4 today and those people are nuts.

That's definitely something not a lot of people hear about, and it's kind of strange to think that there are video game equivalents to LeBron James and Joe Montana.

I was also thinking about how those Koreans have an equivalent status of Brad Pitt to us Americans. It's quite an amazing feat.

I think I've found my topic, I just need to do some research on it.
