View Full Version : Extreme Latency Issues

Alright. So I've decided to post this here to see if maybe someone has an idea.

Lately I've been getting ridiculos Latency in WoW.. I'm normally at 100 to 150ms. Now I never go below 190. I also really feel the lag.

My machine is basically a Intel Q6600 with 4 GB of DDR 2 800. Nvidia 8800 GTX. MSI P35 Platiumn mobo. The Nic card is onboard.

I'm running a fresh install of Windows XP 64 bit. In three days I've tried Windows 7 Beta and Windows Vista Home Premium. I lagged on WoW on all operating systems. My drivers are all up to date. I'm running SP 2 for XP 64 bit. Not sure If there's a SP 3 for XP 64bit. If so, would it make a difference?

Anyways. I spent a week with Blizzard Techsupport. They say it's my Modem.. Which I find weird. I have Cable from Videotron. I got 1 router which is a D-Link DIR-655 Router. I've tried opening the wow ports and closed them. No difference. Anyways guys...any ideas?

Thanks

Could always see if you can get a replacement modem from your ISP. Tell them it's having problems. Whether or not that really is the case, it would let you eliminate it from the possibilities, anyways.

Do you have latency in other games? What we need to do is eliminate all possibilities.

Can you ping www.google.com?

Try this site: http://www.speedtest.net/

Choose a city near you (Montreal) and see what the results are?

This is what I get from Vancouver to Montreal with a Shaw Cable modem, so your results should be similar:

If your ping is quite a bit larger, then it's an ISP issue...Are you paying for the high speed version of their cable internet or the "low speed"?

Can you test any other games? Like Quake or Counterstrike? Or any other game that provides a server list with latency listings?

Can you possible turn on Windows Firewall and remove the router out of the equation?

It's worth pointing out that since the last couple of patches, WoW has been having a lot of problems like this (at least I've felt it, and I've noticed other players commenting on it). Tuesday's patch was a pretty bad one as far as quality goes. Lots of instability and bugs.

So, basically, check some other games to make sure it's not just WoW 8-P.

Lots of people have been having latency issues in WoW lately.

My brother has been complaining about lots of latency as well.

I know Modems do eventually get old, so replacing it might do the trick as well.

You're noticing lag at 190, that seems really weird. I moved right around the time the expansion came out so I can't tell if it's my new location or something that came in with the patch but I used to run at 80-100ms and now I'm consistently between 200 and 250 and I have to say I can't really notice a difference. But yes, latency seems to be higher than normal for everyone now.

Might seem like an obvious idea, but have you tried connecting directly to your modem? And depending on your router you might be able to you QoS to at least test what would happen.

Good luck.

Yeah, ensure it is not only WoW before doing other troubleshooting. I have been experiencing more lag over the past few weeks, and as was mentioned, the latest patch has introduced even more stability problems.

My roommate has been having all sorts of connection and latency issues in WoW lately as well so it's probably that.

On the other hand do you download a lot of things (torrents, online videos, porn, whatever, I don't judge nor care)? A lot of ISPs are putting bandwidth caps so if you go over something like 250GB downloaded in a month, they drop you down to a lower speed. If I remember right Comcast started doing this about 6 months back or so. If you are a heavy downloader you may want to call your ISP and find out if they have anything like that in effect.

A modem swap could be a good idea but try plugging the modem straight into your computer first to rule out any router issues. These have all been said above but they are good pieces of advice. I hope this helps.

lately, hitting up to 200-300 Latency is almost normal for me right now. At night i've noticed my latency drops to double digits.

Thanks for all the responses guys. Basically. I'm running a fresh OS install. I have nothing downloaded except wow. All my other games work perfectly fine. The Techie at blizzard said that wouldn't matter, though I take that with a grain of salt. What baffled him was the trace route I did and the reverse one they did showed no problems. I am constantly lagging.

This is my net test

I'm going to call Videotron about getting a new modem. I'll keep you guys posted.

Oh after running wow on the 4 other PCs in my house. They all experience the same lag. I get this lag on any server I go to. So I'm starting to consider the main problem is the Modem.

As for the Lag caused by blizzard.. Yeah good luck getting them to admit it. Everytime after 6pm server time when Wintergrasp went into battle I'd red ping until 1am where it would finally go into yellow.

As for downloading. Our internet has a 100gb combined limit. After going over that you're charged 1.50$ per gig over the limit.

Update.

I spent 25 minutes on the phone with a Tech Support from my Provider. They flat out told me the only way to get a replacement Modem is to have a Field techie come and run tests. I told my Tech support guy at blizzard and eve he said the guy will half-ass the job and not find anything.

Man this sucks

Eh, kind of happy I still do not play over dial up, I average over 600 and now it would be 10x worse.

Yeah, but I'm on cable and it feels like dial up.

I'd feel bad for ya...but lately I've been having frequent (ie. every 2 or 3 minutes) spikes in my ping. It sucked hearing on vent how I was swinging away at nothing in Left 4 dead, and then the no...NO Jackel...DON'T walk off the ledge!!! Damn it.

Maybe it's time to take matters into your own hands and make the router suddenly stop working completely.

Sabotage is the name of the game my friend. Not sure what you can do to it so they would replace it for free, that's up to you to figure out. :)

Yeah, but I'm on cable and it feels like dial up.

Seems like it's only in WoW, though, that this manifests?

I've had latency problems in WoW ever since WotLK. I always thought it maybe had something to do with that.

To Hi-Jack this thread:

My ping is usually around 100-150 in games, and I have a Fiber Optic 7.5 mb line.

That seems terrible.

Am I right?

Really depends on your down AND up speed. A lot of residential lines have a poor up speed. If that's not the case, it could also have to do with the servers you're connecting to not "serving" enough bandwidth.

Other options, if it's a business class fibre optic, you may want to check settings for your NIC or router...full duplex/half duplex, etc...

Who are you getting fiber optic from? I didn't realize there were any providers in Eugene. Comcast is actually quite good here (surprisingly); they recently increased speeds at no cost, and now I get this:

You might also check your router. I wasn't getting near those speeds until I got a new router, because my old one was a real piece of shit.

1. I get my internet from Qwest. The FiOs is cheap ($35 a month) for a 7.5k line

2. I would try testing my connection at speedtest.net, but lately I have been having this problem that I REALLY HOPE someone can help me with. When I go to http://speedtest.net/ all it loads is the bar at the top that says:

MY RESULTS | MY SUMMARY | GLOBAL STATS

But the actual site doesn't load.

It is REALLY strange, because as recently as about a month ago, I never had this problem.

And also, when you linked to that website (This happens often when someone does the [url ] [/ url]) instead of showing text that I can click, it shows: "op_stop(); ;op_start(); "

It still takes me to the site, but yeah.

Anyone have any clue about wtf is going on?

Try updating or reinstalling Java, as I'm pretty sure that's what Speedtest.net uses.
