See, that's why I used to play the THQ Wrestling Games, mainly back in the n64 era. No memorization, just decision making and ass-kicking.

Holy threadjack batman.
OK. for the EEE:
Full screen mode is what's craping out. Doubled framerate by playing in windowed mode. Is that a normal thing?
Anyway, I really like that eee. and boom.. T91 announced, same specs but with a flippable touchscreen. Bastards.

I was told that the game runs much worse in fullscreen than it does it windowed mode. I'm not sure if this is true or not, but I've been playing in windowed mode regardless.

Started my own game and just happened to pick a spot with magma, without asking it to find it for me. One problem it was open to the surface which meant fire imps and other fire being on the surface. All was fine until the fall when immigrants arrived right near the magma, agroed them and got themselves mostly killed. Which then sucked out my people inside cause to pick up their equipment.
Total chaos and I don't think it is salvageable with everyone now sad and I think I lost all my food producers.
Still love this crazy game though. I started up the more dangerous one as I have one going that is too easy. The worst thing is monkeys that have been trying to steal my items so I though I wanted more of a challenge. I have over 100 dwarfs, plenty of food etc. The new one, I may have bitten off more then I could chew.

I've been away from DF for too long. We use a program at work that has a DOS interface, and today I started imagining that I was watching my dwarfs run around the screen.

Soooo....either you've been away from DF too long, or not long enough? :p

To my knowledge it will fill the whole level of that material. If it changes from a soil to a rock I don't know if the aquifer will continue. You can fight your way through aquifers but it requires pumps to pump the water out. I think they have to be running continuously so if you can get them water or wind powered is the best way. I've never done it but I am sure it is possible. Lots of the engineering challenges you can think of are possible in the game.

I guess it could go either way. It has been a few weeks, so I'm going with too long. :p

I'm rebuilding my computer this weekend, or sooner, depending on when the last part comes in, then World of Oracles, ho!

Be sure to OC your video card so you can turn on the 8xAA, it's amazing! ;)

You laugh, but Dwarf Fortress is my #1 motivation for upgrading my CPU. I'm not even kidding.

well through some testing it appears that an aquifer only fills an entire land type NOT an entire Z level on a map.
on the bright side it does allow me to have unlimited fresh water to my dining room well.

Aquifers are only in clay or sand.
Things you can do:
1. Look for stone on the surface. That is probably stone all the way down past the aquifer, so you can dig there.
2. Channel a bunch of test bores all over the aquifer layer in hopes that there is a stone outcrop that tops out right there.
3. Wait for winter if you're in a cold climate. Expose the area, it will freeze, dig through then and build walls around your shaft through the aquifer.
4. Build screw pumps. 4-6 screw pumps are usually enough to drain an area large enough to tunnel down and wall up from the water. You can power them with spare dwarves, windmills, or waterwheels.
I'm getting the urge to get back to my fort. I haven't played since I let the demons out and they killed my framerate due to their invisibility.

30 Spirits of Fire and 1 Demon came out of the Demon Pits!
That is about 6x as bad as I've had it before. I got a bit impatient and it cost me two champion swordsdwarves, a bull, and a child. Probably be some fallout from the deaths as well.

Explains your framerate hit.

Yeah, they were all invisible and invisible mobs put a huge load on the pathing code. Simply closing two doors between the demons---even though demons can destroy doors---made it run like normal. Open the doors and I'm down to a few FPS.
