View Full Version : Monday Blues - What did you play?

Monday again, which means time to round up the fond thoughts of what was the weekend. Let’s read your tales of triumphs of the games you played, defeated or games that just owned you for hours on end.

I meandered a bit off my scheduled games to play. I squeezed more game time in than I usually do, readying for another semester writing papers. I’ll miss you free time. My lost weekend was spent with:

Turok- If you want to play a FPS play GoW2. Watching grass sway so prettily isn’t much help when you can’t hide in that same grass when you trying for stealth kills. This title is barely worth the bargain basement price. It’s on it’s way back where it belongs…the basement of Gamefly.

God of War II- Trying to give my PS3 some love, I was in the mood for some action. This game still looks mighty sweet and has to have one of the finest openings I’ve experienced in a game.
Theresia- The title that almost no one has heard of; A point and click horror adventure that has most of my attention. Great music, over the top, “how did I get here/who am I” plot all the while “lost” in a maze like environment. Best of all so far, there are consequences for wrong decisions. As you search clues, much of the environment is booby trapped which suddenly you are reading about needles in your bleeding hand, losing some life points.

Castlevania Order of Ecclasia – Was getting my butt kicked in the mountains till I realized you can actually “climb” the mountain at one point. I must of died 10 times by spider bites before realizing there was an up and around way to finish the level. Some patience required with this game. The butt kicking is only getting worse as I proceed.

Persona 3- Gameplay = a lot of resting my team since they get tired so often. My pace with this game is as fast as watching paint dry. Luckily, it’s much more interesting to play than watching paint dry.
Guitar Hero II/III – Just trying for some achievements. GH II attempting to 5 star all songs on medium…with a controller. I get as far as 96% on all the songs in the first set list. Granted I haven’t touched GH II in some time but I expected success on at least ONE song. Nada. GH III, trying to 5 star all songs on Easy. Only two songs left but couldn’t finish the fight. I’ll be back…
That was my gaming weekend. What did YOU play?

Those spiders really annoyed the shit out of me, so I started to kill them from a distance with the 2 flying orbs glyphs. i really like how the weapons are suitable for different enemies. Keeps you on your toes. It is hard though, much butt kicking indeed. I need to pick it up again.

I played GRID, which I liked (most of it). I love how every race is different. But some are more fun than others. I really hated the Destruction Derby, mostly because the cars drive like a drunk monkey.

I also started up a Vampyre Story, which immediately became my current favorite game. Very funny and an old school return to form to the Monkey Island era.

Some FFIV DS as well, which I'm starting to enjoy more and more. Finished my second playthrough of Fable 2 (got greedy in the end this time). Now to round up some of the leftover quests.

Well the real embarrassing part was, after killing the spiders with that fire flying orbs I was finally ready to get to a very obvious new glyph and chest. Except...I can't go up there yet. So it seems it's not a readily available area...then I went out of the cave and tried going to "climb" the mountain. Sure enough...up and around...end of level. I don't want to say how long I was trying to get past those spiders just trying to "jump" up where I could see that glyph :o. And the next section is more fun. I eventually just ran past the enemies hoping for a save spot. I found a much needed weapon that seems to be more powerful...and needed to survive the area. So yes, intended butt kicking on game developer's part...yes.

I'm usually playing a few DS games at once so I take breaks from this game. I need to throw Chrono Trigger in the mix...

Played some Rock Band 2. Lots of WAR (picked that up on steam this weekend), it's damn good PvP. As well as some Peggle.

I finally started Overlord (bit of a Steam backlog) and put a few hours into that.

Also worked on some of the challenges in Defence Grid: The Awakening. The grinder, tower limit and resource limit aren't so bad, but the story challenges are brutal.

Revelations: Persona My intentions were to play through the Persona series straight, 1-4, but the archaic interface of this game pretty much put a stop to that. Navigating both the overworld and the 3/4 perspective was just a pain, not to mention the battles. Hopefully the rumored PSP remake is real and makes it over here, because I'd really like to play the game.

Persona 3 FES Rather than going for Persona 2 I just jumped straight into 3. Wow. Holy shit do I love this game. I'm about 2 1/2 hours in and I can see spending a lot of time with P3. I kinda wish my party members didn't get tired so quick in Tartarus, I really just want to explore more. And so far the battles are pretty damn fun, so that doesn't hurt. Oh, and I love the music. I think I've found my RPG fix for the next little while, and with P4 yet to play, that could go on for quite a while. :)

Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice I absolutely loved the first game, masochistic difficulty and all, and this is more of that, but more ridiculous. It's story is consciously stupid (the game starts with your wedding being interrupted by a gang called The Convicts, as you're getting married in your bright blue Police uniform) and you still jump from car to car like some man-frog, but it's just fun as all hell. I really must be a glutton for punishment, because I selected the Hardcore difficulty, but so far it doesn't seem to be much more difficult than the first game.

Sadly, I didn't get to any Final Fantasy XI, Chrono Trigger, Motorstorm, or Zelda: Twilight Princess. Time was pretty limited this weekend. :(

360:
Acme Arsenal - got it with gamerpass and it was terrible, camera was so bad at times I couldn't tell where I was, plus it was really dark on the first level.
Rockband2 - had to create a new band...again. this is the 2nd time my save was wiped from hdd.

Hitman Blood Money

Persona 2 is nowhere near as archaic as the original game, so give it a chance when you have the time. The strangest thing about Persona 2 is the way it defaults to auto-battle.

Just so you know, and for anyone else that's playing P3, your characters take longer to get tired as you gain levels. So the getting tired thing becomes less of an issue the further you get in the game, though it never quite goes away. It also gets better when you gain the ability to trade out the tired ones for the fresh ones. Just don't push it too far, or they won't be able to go to Tartarus for a few days.

As for me, I hit the level cap in Fallout 3, prompting me to focus on the main plot after all this time. I also played the very brief demo for LocoRoco 2. Even though the game will be just $20, I don't know if I'll be able to buy it. Stupid budget restrictions...

Please tell me more about these two titles and where I could procure copies, as I yearn for good point and click adventure games and the Strong Bad and Sam & Max games won't tide me over for much longer.

Let's see, what did I play this weekend?

Not a lot. It was my wife's birthday yesterday, so we were out of the house for most of the day. Saturday was pretty much the same, only we were shopping for home improvement stuff and unloading the storage unit for a chunk of the time. That said, I did manage to squeeze in a tiny bit of gaming over the weekend.

Castlevania: Order Of Ecclesia - I spent a while trying to get the windy glyph but gave up. Suffice it to say, I just want Albus to give me my glyph back right now, but he's being very greedy and selfish.

Katamari Damacy - Yup, that's right. The original and still champion. I fired it up when I got my TV and PS2 set up again in my basement and damn if the game isn't as fun as always. There's a reason I buy anything with Katamari slapped on it and it was a lot of fun to watch my kids laughing their heads off as I rolled up everything in sight.

Yakuza - Again on the basement TV, I decided to restart the game as I had no recollection of the plot or what was going on or who the characters are, which is a big problem when you're playing a game with as intricate a plot as Yakuza. I see from my previous save file that I was about 7 hours into the game and on chapter 6. I spent about 2 hours playing last night and am at the tail end of chapter 3 already. I'm almost at the part where the world opens up a bit more and I start doing quests and errands, so I expect my pace to slow a bit over the coming days, but man, is this game ever good. It's a nice change of pace from my Persona fetish and since it's had a bit of time to age, it's more wine than vinegar. I just can't wait to finish it so I can finally crack the plastic on Yakuza 2!

And last but not least -

Persona 4 - I didn't spend a lot of time with this over the weekend as it always seemed that by the time I got it fired up, I was barely conscious and I'd find myself fighting sleep after wandering about for 4-5 minutes. This is my week to work afternoons though, so that means I'll have a lot more free time during the day and can really sink some time into the game.

I also played a bit more Magic Ball and Cuboid (which hurts my brain more than Echochrome did!) but that was about the extent of my gaming for the weekend.

I probably spent more time this weekend reading comics and manga than I did actually gaming. And last night's Turning The Spigot took me a lot longer to write than I anticipated, but it's all good...

Beat Facebreaker a few more times (will eventually get the achievement for beating it with all characters). Awesome fun for a $10 game. The reviews were all wrong when they called it a button masher. It's definitely NOT. Makes me wonder if they played much of the title before giving their scores.

Also, a ton of Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway yesterday. That game is fantastic. I love the action-cam deaths. I can't recommend BiA enough, and I didn't play the second, and never beat the first. For some reason, the 3rd title just clicks with me (the more Halo-like health system doesn't hurt either). If you're looking for a FPS with some strategy, get this game.

Both games are fucking pretty as hell, too. I love the cartoony art of Facebreaker, and the environments (especially the indoor areas) of BiA.

@Spigot: Glad to help out the master of the obscure. Below some links to what you seek:

Theresia info #2 (http://www.gamingtrend.com/GameInfo/GameInfo.php?GameID=7384)

Official website of Vampyre story (http://www.vampyrestory-game.com/)

In the handheld forum there is a thread about Theresia. i'm trying to post my impressions as I go along. I suck at game "reviewing" but i'm trying. Theresia is definitely a good pick for your Turn the Spigot. All credit goes to Gorvi though for uncovering this gem.

I am hoping Steam picks up Vampyre Story although it's available online through Amazon and other places. Theresia you might have a harder time trying to find a copy.

Crackdown-Finally getting around to beating this. Damn Shai-Gen hit squads are brutal when you are on the ground. I only have the two bosses left on their island and the last Volk guy. At the moment, I am trying to max out driving and guns instead of finishing, since I maxed out the rest awhile ago. Vehicles get useful after you level up your driving skill.

The World Ends with You - This game has devoured any and all time I might have spent playing other, far less significant, games. I'm currently trying to slowly turn all of Shibuya into Jupiter of the Monkey zones so that my Masamune and Muramasa pins are limitless in power and potential. :D

Ooo... That Theresia sounds really neat. It also sounds very vaguely familiar after I read the description. Probably something I came across back in the early part of the year and then totally forgot about.

Is it good though? If so, I might see if I can track down a copy somewhere. Or else you can send me your copy when you're finished :)

I did play the Fable II downloadable content. and got my dog back :o It's the main thing that's been keeping me from playing more of this game Then, yesterday I played about 8 hours of pen and paper Shadowrun for the first time. I didn't have as much time to game this weekend as I would have liked.

I played at least 5 hours of Uno on Friday night, both before and after going out for some drinks. I had a blast playing with many of the great people here on COG.

Saturday and Sunday I played more UNO and Puzzle Arcade with my buddy Josh.

Other than that I didn't do any other gaming, which is too bad.

However, I have today off from work, so I'm planning on playing Puzzle Arcade with Josh, as well as Fable 2, Sins of a Solar Empire, Defense Grid, Turok, and the newly installed (from Steam) Company of Heroes.

Edit - I also picked up Two Worlds and The Darkness for $10 each at Best Buy yesterday, so I might crack one of those open, but I'm going to try not to.

I stopped at the Volk Boss that you have to lure outside and to the top of a building. Kept getting nailed by exploding barrels and snipers. Shame too as I was really enjoying the game. Should probably get back to it someday.

As for this weekend, played Fallout 3 a fair bit and got owned by a bunch of fireants right after being confronted by 3 Mercs. I hate fireants so much. The weekend continues, sort of, as I'm at home sick. Good new is that I can play some more. Hurray!

I was in Dallas on business all weekend, so not a ton of gaming. But my DS was with me...

Professor Layton: Made some great progress with this wonderful game.

I finally made it into the tower, so things are starting to come together finally!

Chrono Trigger: I made the mistake of putting this game on the backburner over the last few weeks and now I'm lost as to what to do next. I have access to that place outside of Time, but I have no idea where I need to go to further the storyline. So I basically trudged all over the place, in different times, without really getting anywhere. Time to take a peek at the walkthrough, I suppose.

Finally got around to finishing Gears 2 this weekend...so assuming there may be some fellow members of the procrastinators club out there...

Lots of fun! Particularly the Brumak ride...but the ending was...well...confusing. What happened to the Queen? Why all the hints that the COG wasn't all it was set up to be...and the vague hints that humanity created the Locust...but then no follow up? I actually sat through the credits for the radio message from Fenix's dad...but what did that mean? Very confusing.

Another note/mild whine-fest - what is with Microsoft and collector's editions? First, my "collectors" Halo 3 disc was scratched. Then my Fable 2 got gutted...plus the download content didn't work. Finally, my gold-plated lancer won't bloody download. They're trying to teach me to never buy collectors, I guess. *sniff* I really wanted a flashy, pimped out rifle too...

Just fired it up for a few minutes tonight at work and suffice it to say that my curiosity is piqued. You know what it reminds me of?

Penumbra meets Etrian Odyssey. And that's a very happy marriage.

My only gripe so far is that things just fly out of nowhere to hurt you. WTF?!

And they had a decent stack of them at my local hive of scum and villainy.

I never played Penumbra, and of course I had to go search it. Now I have another PC game to add to the backlog. Thanks for that Spigot ;). I definitely can see the EO vibe, since it's the FP maze walk around. All we are missing are the nasty monsters...oh wait, the environment itself will do that if you guess wrong :). Which I find hilarious and I love. This totally makes the game for me. It just strikes me as something from the old text adventure days.

Glad you found so many copies at your Gamestop :). Hopefully this will be a Turn the Spigot subject and others will be able to find it.

I did a marathon of Persona 3 yesterday. I finally hit the sweet spot of the game, which for me is when a game grabs you hostage and you never realize it. Until you look for the time and it's 5 hours later. I made it past midterms, and now have more peeps in my party. And they do seem to get tired less now. Thankfully.

Yeah, the crew in P3 eventually learn how to stay awake longer than 12 minutes at a stretch later in the game.

I'm hoping to spend a chunk of today really plowing away at P4 after I go sit in my kid's kindergarten class for a bit this morning. That should be interesting. I wonder if I'll bump my social link up a rank by spending time with him and his teacher...

And I definately think Theresia will be a subject of much discussion on TTS in the future. It definately has a sort of low-rent, B-grade game feel to it, but it works. And the needles... THE NEEDLES! I mean, come on girly...

I need to do that. I was going to last night, but I ended up playing through Portal (for the first time) from beginning to end last night. Great game, even if I still want to brutally murder the next person who says or types that incredibly annoying "The cake is a lie." phrase. That wasn't even funny in the game. Still, it was clever as hell, both in the writing and the gameplay.

Didn't get too much gaming in on the weekend, like many others here...

PS3: Burnout Paradise.

DS: More DQIV...loving every moment of it.

360: COD5 co-op. Okay, it sucks not being able to save your co-op campaign, but level select works just as well for jumping into the action for some couch co-op :)

PC: Discovered GameTap...so, spent a lot of time playing everything I could download. Most of my time ended up with Railroad Tycoon 2 :)

I completed Tales of the Abyss. The entire thing felt "meh" to me, even if the plot picks up in the later part of the game. What really kept me hooked to Abyss was the "FR-LiMBS" battle system. Loved the deep customization.

And I definately think Theresia will be a subject of much discussion on TTS in the future. It definately has a sort of low-rent, B-grade game feel to it, but it works. And the needles... THE NEEDLES! I mean, come on girly...
I can't wait to see this on TTS. I hope someone does this game for GOTM :). Now that would be a blast... And if those needles are bothering you, then you have gone soft. I know you played text adventures. Those damn games had parts that were unforgivable.
I played mostly Doom 3 over the weekend. I made it through Hell and got the Soul Cube, but that's about it. I also got started on Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia again. I'm trying to go through and beat all of the bosses without taking a hit. (Do that, and you get a medal) I've gotten them all, except Dracula's.
No hits from bosses? Damn.
What version did you play? PS3? I wondered how it played on a console. Been meaning to download it. I played it on my laptop but with a 360 controller. I had lag issues with the controller though. I blame my underwhelming specs on this laptop...

And Persona 3 just keeps getting better. Find some marathon time soon :).

I'll most likely be up for playing tonight if you (or anyone) is available. Joey's out of town for tonight and tomorrow morning, so I need to keep busy so I don't get scared being home alone. Yes, I get scared really easily. Horde? Campaign? Name it, and we'll do it.
I'm envious. Wish I could be there with you guys...next time i'm hoping...

I'll definately be firing up the 360 tomorrow to take The Maw for a spin. Not sure if I'll play much on it otherwise. I'm really on a roll in P4 right now. I am able to take down the second end bosses in the dungeons rather handily nowadays (I took down one today despite having a party that was at half SP and health when I went into the fight).

One more blip and I'll max out the Nanako social link. WOo! I love maxing out links because it means I don't have to worry about them later!

PS3 version. I'd picked it up to quiet a friend at work's constant badgering that he wanted me to play TF2, despite the fact that it's really not my kind of game. I got it for $12 though, so not much risk there. I haven't played HL2 yet, so that'll just be an added bonus, Portal was the real draw for me. It played just fine for me.

Get online now! Horde with Shodan and me! We need more people!

Thanks for playing with us...oh wait! :p

I had a great time in Gears 2 tonight! It was my second time playing, and I was on top for several rounds, I actually did really well. :)

I had so much fun that I went to Gamefly and hit the "keep it" button. $40.80 later, I now own Gears 2. Thanks a lot guys. :p

Ugh, my internet is such shit sometimes. I was really excited about playing with you guys (especially since Joey's out of town and I'm lonely), and it kept crapping out on me! So annoying! Oh well, I'm glad you had fun!

And at least you own it now, so we can play together more later on. :)

I also might be able to play some time this weekend. Not yet sure though. I'll look for you guys if I do get online. Otherwise, I'll be playing on Tuesday for sure.

I played a couple of hours of Infinite Undiscovery tonight. I'm probably 3/4ths the way through the game now. The narrative hasn't gotten any better, but the combat is still fun and I like traversing the dungeons thanks to the real time combat.

I also played a few games of Culdcept Saga with my brother and a friend earlier this week. We are finding that the game has a huge disadvantage for new players that haven't played the single player game, though. My brother hasn't invested any time in the single player while me and the other player had. He lost every game pretty handily, which meant he got few new cards to improve his deck (the lower your placement in a match the less new cards you get to add to your deck).

Eventually he will probably catch up but it will take far too long unless he plays the singe player. They really should have just made it so that you get the same number of new cards whether you win or lose a match. But i guess they wanted to put forth extra incentive.

What they should have done is made it so that you could trade and/or wager cards on matches. That would have made it a lot more interesting.
