Well after waiting all week, five major hl2 mods are now available directly through Steam.

The mods are as follows:

Insurgency (http://store.steampowered.com/app/17700/)

Grab your rifle, join your team mates, and enter the fight. Take to the modern battlefield and engage in intense, realistic battles. Choose your side between a highly organized conventional army or the partisan insurgents. Teamwork, tactics, bravery and discipline are the keys to your success in a deadly and treacherous modern war environment.

Age of Chivalry (http://store.steampowered.com/app/17510/)

Age of Chivalry is a total conversion for Half-Life 2 from Team Chivalry, a close group of friends dedicated to creating a fun, story-driven multiplayer experience set in a fantasy world in the medieval ages.

Age of Chivalry features a fast paced first person melee combat system that will take the player to a new level of immersion. Players will be able to take part in sieges, town raids and open war in a story driven game.

D.I.P.R.I.P (http://store.steampowered.com/app/17530/)

D.I.P.R.I.P. is a Half-Life 2 multiplayer total conversion. Gameplay is based on vehicle combat in various post-war environments. Vehicles use multiple weapon mounts which are activated by finding weapons scattered around the battlegrounds.

Key locations in the post-war world are rich in uncontaminated water and fuel. Most of the terrain has been left in a mechanically unchanged state. Abandoned city centers, malls, refineries, country food storages, old military bases and other such places are the scenery of raging battles.

Synergy (http://store.steampowered.com/app/17520/)

Synergy is a Half-Life 2 multiplayer modification with multiple gameplay modes, mainly focusing on cooperative play. Get together with friends and fight your way through individual levels or play through campaigns, including Half-Life 2.

If you prefer competition, play the Teamplay or Deathmatch game modes. In Teamplay games, you join the Combine or Rebel team and fight against the opposing team with friendly players and NPCs.

Zombie Panic (http://store.steampowered.com/app/17500/)

Zombie Panic: Source is a cooperative survival horror Half-Life 2 Modification, the sequel to the popular Half-Life Modification "Zombie Panic". As a member of a party of survivors you find yourself without provisions or any military support. Fending off the undead has never been more difficult, but with a large variety of fire arms, explosives, and unique items, the task is not impossible. This time through we introduce you to new characters that you can control, numerous weapons including a large list of melee weapons, and the Carrier zombie which can turn friend into foe. We started it all and are happily continuing the fight!

I've personally played Insurgency and while I thought it was a bit slow, it had a lot of potential. I'll probably give all of these mods a try over the next few weeks..perhaps we could get enough of us together to try em out on our own.

It is also worth mentioning that the Steam Weekend Deal is Half Life 2: Episode 1 for 4.99. So, if you are just getting started, all you have to do is plop down five dollars and you are good to go with these great source mods!

Insurgency sounds like fun, and Zombie Panic should tide over my undead urges until Left 4 Dead comes out.

Insurgency got a bit old after a single night of playing, but I think that was because I did the same thing, over and over again. That was also the night of the mod's release, so things could have gotten much better. In other words, don't take my word for it, try the mod. :)

I tried Insurgency some months ago and, while I had fun with it, it was more of a "Why don't I just play Counterstrike Source?" sort of thing. I will say that it wins just because it is a HL2 mod that you could actually find a game going on. Hopefully this new set up for mods will help give these things life, because most of them need it.

Man, I need to grab some of these and try 'em out.

Insurgency seemed really cool, but in play it was stupid hard. One of those games like Battlefield 1942 used to be on some maps, where you pretty much just randomly died from some cocksucker peeking out from god knows where and blasting a hole in your head before you have the slightest chance to react.

DIPRIP was REALLY DAMN COOL. Seriously, if you loved Twisted Metal 2, you'll love the hell out of this game. So much fun, so dead on.

Age of Chivalry was irritating as hell and had almost no players. IME melee tends to work poorly in FPS far more often than not, and this was no exception, and the fact that the archery was all but useless failed to make up for it.

I can't remember if Zombie Panic is the one I've played for source or not. There's so damn many zombie mods out there that it's hard to keep them all straight (except for Brainbread, which owns your face). I know there was one I played for Source that was terrible, but I can't recall what it was so I withhold any judgement.

Go buy Dark Messiah of Might & Magic for 9.99 off of Steam and you will see good melee in FP. Fo' reelz.

I played the demo. It did rather rock.

There was a very immersive feel to that game that actually reminded me of Butcher Bay in that respect.

After playing Dark Messiah, I think every first person game needs a kick button and shit to kick people into. So satisfying. Dark Messiah is still one of my all time favorite PC games.

The story sucks, though. Just so we are all aware.

I've played Zombie Panic and Zombie Master. I much prefer Zombie Master.

Anyone tried Synergy yet - it wants HL EP2/EP1 here, still on the downloads. Played Age of Chivalry for a bit and came to the same conclusions as J Arcane : combat feels slow and random, and with archery it's impossible to tell what you're aiming at or where the hell your last arrow went.

Hey a mod is a game made from another right? Not a modded game engine?:p

Sorry, couldn't resist.
