And that’s a wrap for another week in the no longer new year. Some battled the snow, others battled giant bugs in the dead of summer while others began with pens and notebooks in hand for another semester of classes. Time to leave the real world responsibilities behind or pretend to as, we begin to dream about what we want to do with our gaming weekend that is now within reach once again.
I’m going to continue my recluse ways, taking advantage of the last weekend before classes begin not worrying yet about the horrors of writing more papers. So I plan on escaping the dreary weather with my last full time gaming weekend until May with the following:
Tomb Raider:Underworld- This title is in the game news recently due to the lack of sales and how to once again reinvigorate the franchise. It’s sad that the best yet in the series wasn’t appreciated enough. Although I am not against a relook at the gameplay since it will mean a fresher look with the possibility of new fans to the series, I think if this is the last TR of it’s kind, it went out with a spectacular goodbye.
Turok- Every gamer has their favorite genres they will play and enjoy almost all from said genre. FPS are not mine. But I’m giving this title some attention to play some MP this weekend with other tortured CoGers for the Game of the Month. Once the weekend is over, this ships back to Gamefly.
Persona 3- All the talk of the “man-caves” had me assessing my little mini-cave. My PS3 hooked up to my monitor was conducive to playing enough. But with the great help from ADDGirl, I’m now optimized for gaming with my PS3. Now I have less excuses for not playing this.
God of War II- A Xmas present from ADDGirl, I’m itching to play something “actiony”. I need to slice and dice some enemies. This will do nicely. And I need to work on my PS2 backlog of games.
Theresia – A DS title Gorvi got me interested in when it came out a few months ago. It took a while to get from Gamefly, so going to give this a try. This snippet of a description from Gamefly: The frightening adventure thrusts you into a maze that holds you prisoner.
Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia- Hopefully I’ll do more than just leveling up in the giant underground cave.
Still on vacation with: Fallout3
So when not shoveling out your driveway, watching football or tuned into the presidential inauguration how are you escaping this weekend in your game library? What are YOU playing?

Valkyria Chronicles: Is in there for single player.
Too Human: Most likely going to do some Co-op.
Company of Heroes: I've been getting back into the online scene. Not playing for a few months has killed my micro though. I feel so slow.
Final Fantasy 9: Melbatoast got me thinking about it recently... so I think I might actually play through it again.

That actually sounds like a plan.
I'm probably going to take Rogue Galaxy for a spin, or I might try and finish Tales of Vesperia before Street Fighter IV is released and takes ownership of my free time.

Valkyria Chronicles has been my main standby for the last month or so, but I finished that this week, so it's on to something else to get in to. So.....
Chrono Trigger I should be finishing up CT this weekend. Overall, it's a solid game, but I'm not quite getting why it was held in such high regard. It's good, but even in it's day FFVI was much better. Still, it's very enjoyable.
Motorstorm Love the game. I can really see why it was a pack in for a while, it's just great, simple fun. I think I'm about half way through the tickets at this point, and it's starting to get a bit more challenging.
Zelda: Twilight Princess I need to start playing this again, I put it down once I'd gotten to the first real dungeon to concentrate more on Valkyria Chronicles. Now, without that, I should be good to get deeper into the game.
Revelations: Persona Finally! After all these years of not having played any Shin Megami games, I should be starting the first Persona game this weekend. I'm really looking forward to finally getting into the series.
Final Fantasy XI Maybe. I really want to play, but damn it if I'm just having a hard time finding the time to play (more than an hour at a time). I really want to get some merits on Scholar for when I can eventually play on a more regular basis as the kids get a bit older.

Dead Space (360)- I started this game last weekend and was really drawn in by the overall quality and presentation of it. However, I have yet to have a single second of fear or tenseness from the game. I was expecting to get the same feeling I got when I played Fatal Frame, FEAR or Condemned, but nothing has made me jump or feel ackward about entering a new area.
Wipeout HD (PS3)- Having discovered last night that you get an initial speed boost by timing the gas button press with the signal to go (off the starting line), I suddenly was not having trouble at all with any of the events. Before, I was always holding down the gas while waiting to go. That extra 2-3 seconds that is made up really changes the entire aspect of the game. I was having trouble getting up to 6th place by holding the X button. Since last night, I am usually in 1st place by the end of the second lap and got like 20 gold medals last night.

I'm probably going to take Rogue Galaxy for a spin.
I loved FFIX.
Rogue Galaxy is in my queue after I finish up Persona 4 and the two Yakuza games. I loved what I played of it but it got lost in the shuffle after I got my 360.
Anyway...
My main game is Persona 4 this weekend. I've been somewhat tempted by other games over the past couple of days but I keep coming back to P4 and once I fire it up, I don't want to stop. I'm about 45 hours in and I'm hoping to finish it in the next week or so, esp. now that my basement is done and I can start playing games downstairs on the PS2 while my wife watches figure skating (blech).
I want to play Valkyria Chronicles or a bit of LittleBigPlanet, but I'm trying to resist the temptation to put another game in my PS3's drive until I beat P4.
Other than that, I might get some WoW time in over the weekend, or one of my various Steam games (go Peggle Nights!) or maybe even some X-Com or something. Who knows!?
Oh, I'll probably play more Castlevania: Order Of Ecclesia this weekend too. I've been motoring through the game this week and it is incredibly satisfying to beat the bosses, no matter how badly they might kick my butt. I'm at the Giant's House right now and those cat girls are pissing me off!
And Magic Ball will probably get a few rounds played.
I need to fire up my 360 again. I turned it on briefly for a quick GeoWars2 play session yesterday but that has been the only time I've touched it in about a week. Naruto: Rise Of A Ninja is itching to be played...
It's my wife's birthday on Sunday but we're stupidly busy that day, so we'll probably spend tomorrow emptying some of the stuff in the storage unit into our basement and then having a nice dinner or something. Nothing says, "Happy birthday!" like moving furniture!

Well if you fire up the 360 tonight, ADDGirl is looking for Uno partners. I might be on afterward looking for some L4D or GoW2 play. I am becoming addicted to being horde or zombie bait :D
And I just got the green light for Magic Ball to purchase :D:D

Almost certainly all Fallout 3, though I did just download the LocoRoco 2 demo. Need to try that out. I'm getting close to the level cap in Fallout (accidentally hit 17 over breakfast), so I may try to wrap it up soon, even though I know I'm nowhere close to seeing all of it. I just need to move on to other things.

I'm horribly, terribly, addicted to Rise of the Argonauts, which i think is going to keep me slavishly devoted until i cross the finish line. I always begrudgingly liked the game, but goddamn does it ever get amazingly good once you finish up the opening chapter. One of the most unique and engaging RPG's i've played in a long time - and it's DEFINITELY action-RPG material, it's a much deeper game than initially presented. In the five or six hours i've played, i've really only had two bouts of combat, the rest has been dialog. Amazingly well written, wonderfully acted dialog.

Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia: My girlfriend and I had a fight on my birthday, and she felt bad, so she bought me this game. Greatest way to get a game ever. I shall start it this weekend.
Here's a piece of advice. Be fully prepared for a brutal challenge. This is the kind of game that will sends kids (and some teenagers) crying to Mommy after they get killed by a boss 10 times in a row. I'm the kind of guy who can finish most games in three weeks. This game took me three months, and I still haven't beat it on the harder difficulties. Great game, but quite the challenge. Beware.
Anyway, here's what in my queue.
Doom 3: A friend of mine downloaded this game off of the Internet, and I asked if he would kick it over to my computer. Yeah, I know it's a few years old, but it's still scary as hell (no pun intended). When I last left off, I was just past the Communications Center, trying to send a distress signal to the orbital fleet. I also found my first Rage Mode power-up. Fun.
Quake 4: Just beat this game, but on the easiest difficulty. I'm going to start over on a harder difficulty.
Pokemon Diamond: I finally got my Dragonite on my quest to run a 100-win streak in the Battle Tower. Now, I'm working on getting my Tyranitar, but Pupitar is weaksauce, and I'm having a hard time finding a good place to train it.
Tomb Raider: Anniversery: I took a bit of a vacation on Lara Croft last week, but I'd really like to beat this game. I can't recall where I'm at right now, though.
Currently on vacation from: Fallout 3 and Need For Speed: Carbon.

Grand Theft Auto 4 on the PC, which is not nearly so bad as I was led to believe. In fact, after some tweaking (which was admittedly a pain but still doable), it runs buttery smooth on my rig (2.6Ghz Intel Core Duo, 2GB RAM, Vista32, GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB) at 1280x1024 with much better view distance and detail level than the defaults. Shadows look kinda crappy, but everything else is great and I'm having a blast with it, not having a 360 to have already played it on. I know H.Bogard and some others really hate the PC version and all (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/showpost.php?p=107451&postcount=14), but I've been playing it all week (both offline and online) and I'm quite happy. I've always preferred the PC ports of GTA to the console versions (gunfights are soooo much better with a mouse), and this is no exception. Bap and I had a good time with the co-op on Tuesday.
So that'll probably take most of my gaming time this weekend, though I'm also get in some Animal Crossing: City Folk, maybe some Fallout 3, and hopefully a little Prince of Persia.
And Chrono Trigger DS if I find myself away from keyboard and console.

Not really. I honestly feel that FF7 didn't age particularly well. The graphics are bad, not in a Low poly bad, but in a "I can't fucking tell what's on screen" bad. Then there's the wonderfully long Summon animations. As well as a lot of other nit picks. So don't feel alone.

Just got back from a 2 day stay in the hospital, not myself but my baby mama, after she came down with a severe bacterial lung infection (like bronchitis). I slept the night with her in the maternity ward, which felt like a hotel (only more expensive) and with far less sleep--nebulizer treatments every so many hours so we were woken up a lot. I've missed so much work in the last month or so that I forgot what my job entails (and with no vacation/sick time on the books anymore, I am not getting paid). I hope we stay AWAY from the hospital until the baby is born in July. Good lord.
But I'm glad we're home, she is very happy, and I just hooked up my new linksys GL router, so we're even happier. After my Netgear died last month, I felt like I was living in the stone age without Wi-Fi in this place.
This weekend I'll be playing plenty of Facebreaker and Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway. Liking them both a lot. And sleeping.

Well I tried playing it years ago when I think they were up to FF X by then. So the graphics didn't look to hot for me but I don't need over the top graphics. However, I felt the characters were awful stereotypes and the movement of the characters was awkward. Yet, it's one of those games everyone seems to talk about so it feels as if I need to play it. Sometime this year I might pop it in the PS3.
I also need to play some more Turok so I can tear it apart in the Game of the Month thread.
You don't need to play much of it to tear it apart. Don't subject yourself to such ill ways to yourself. Unless you are playing MP which i'm hoping to find someone in the afternoon to play.
As ADD was on her Uno marathon last night, I got to play as planned more Persona 3 and God of War 2. Damn these characters get "tired" fast. I think i'm going to carry around espresso drinks to keep their energy levels up.
As for GoW2...holy shit, I know this title is a few years old but that opening was mighty fine. I can't wait for GoW 3.

Yeah, the best thing about Persona 4 is that the characters don't get tired or sick. Man, I hated that.
I played a bit more P4 last night but most of my night was taken up by watching BSG (I can't believe X is a Cylon!) and playing Order of Ecclesia. I'm getting pretty far in it now. There are some hard bosses but usually it takes a death or two to figure out what glyphs do the most damage and then bammo...
As for FF7, I can sympathize. I played through it on the PC back in, what, 1999 or so. I never did beat it, but I did get to the final boss. I've tried to play it again since then but it has aged so poorly...
Which is why, when I finished Crisis Core, I was ready to write in and demand a remake of FFVII. It's definately one of my least favourite Final Fantasy games but if it were redone even to a level of Crisis Core, I'd probably be able to play through it and really enjoy it.

I thought when I was reading the P4 thread and other comments about P3 everyone mentioning how P4 was different and better for it. However, I wasn't playing P3 yet so it didn't make any sense. It certainly does now. Not a deal breaker, just the fear of all my characters collapsing, dying and I lose all my progress.
I don't understand why they haven't redone FFVII by now. Maybe they are working their way through the order of all the games. It's just a money maker I would think to re-do it. Makes me wonder why NOT this game after all this time.

Trust me. Not having to deal with that mechanic really helps the game in the long run!

Ah well. I have enough other classic (and not so classic) games to work on in the meantime. I'll survive.

I have a three day weekend, so I'm hoping to do quite a bit of gaming.
Uno - Played this last night for 3.5 hours with ADDGirl. Rini, Rock Bandit, and Slip joined us as well. We all had a good time, although ADDGirl got a little mad at me for being a jerk. Later on that night I played with Rini, Ondo, Joey, and Riley for another hour or so.
Turok - I was hoping to play some of this today, but no one was on. I'm having a hard time motivating myself to play much of anything at the moment, unfortunately, so I was disappointed that I couldn't find anyone on to play. :/
I'm also hoping to play Defense Grid, Fable 2, Sins of a Solar Empire, Company of Heroes, and Sam & Max: Culture Shock.

I've beat Facebreaker for the second time today. I even got the achievement for going through without losing a fight. Pulled that one off at the very last boss in Sudden Death. Phew. Anyway, great game, worth the $10 I spent on it. I thought it would be MUCH worse, or with terribly broken gameplay, the way I read some reviews. Once again, I disagree with reviewers. But then again, I didn't spend $60 on it. It's like a very fast-paced Punchout, trying to figure out how to beat each fighter. It can be really tough until you figure out some of them. I know my first time through I thought I'd toss it aside because I was frustrated, but I'm glad I stuck with it and learned that a good Offense needs a good Defense, and vice versa, instead of relying on one or the other too much.
I think now I might pop in Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway. I'm debating what I should play next. Probably more Facebreaker, but I want to try something else as well.

I'd suggest when you do, start with Portal. Then try to keep the song out of your head when you finish :). AC is an awesome game as well. You might find it repetitive (I didn't) but you should have fun with it.

Played some GRID today. borrowed it from a friend. Surprisingly good racing game.
Also borrowed a load of DS games.
FFIV DS is pretty good presentation wise, that must have been the very first JRPG I finished and boy does this bring back memory's. Shame that the battles fucking suck visually. They should have been 2D, not 3.

I'm really liking Iji, despite its slow style of gameplay and weak animations. The stat system and the reactive nature of the dialog open the way to different styles of play, which is cool. There are even some cool dialog-based Easter Eggs that can only be earned by completing specific actions. All in all, I'd recommend the game to anyone who has ever enjoyed a Metroid game, as long as they aren't expecting a comparable level of polish on the controls and animations.

I'm really liking Iji...
I had a good bit of fun with Iji but didn't care for some of the character art, indie aspect aside. It had a little bit of an Out of This World feel. I got bored and deleted it but it had some cool aspects (i liked the hacking). I actually felt kind of bad as I was putting it in the Recycle Bin but I would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes Metroid type games, as you said or maybe even Out of This World (from what little I played/watched as a kid).

I was in the mood for some tunes before bed so put in GH III. I still like GH II better but trying to 5 star all the songs. Came close to doing that but the last two songs I need are just not doable tonight. The level of difficulty even on easy gets a bit much. Then played one song on GH II and realized playing on medium before sleep isn't a good combination. Now i'm thinking about going back and doing Hard and Expert but with the controller. My dexterity barely allows me to hold a pen let alone playing GH on hard or expert.

I played UNO for an hour or so with my buddy Josh tonight, bringing my total UNO time this week to at least 6 hours.
I also bought Puzzle Arcade so he and I could play it together. We did a puzzle together, which was a lot of fun. We are planning on doing some more of them tomorrow, and I can't wait! I'm digging the game so far.
I played around with Auditorium. I really like the aesthetic of it, and the simple puzzle mechanic is intriguing. It was fun to play around with it, and I beat most of the levels.

I'd love to have RB. Scratch that...I'm still dying to play the game that I wished so hard for Xmas :D. Unfortunately I envision RB with the drum set and there is no room for it in our crawlspace. I thought about getting RB 1 and just do the guitar but just defeats the purpose to me. So yes, it kills me slowly that I don't have RB.

I saw you playing that and wondered how it played. It was something I really wanted to download when it appeared but due to budget restrictions...I like the idea you can have two people playing helping with the puzzle. Not sure how that would pan out for ADD and I. I see us "discussing" vigorously where the pieces should go or how we should work it and end up hitting each other with the controllers :p

I got a couple of hours in with Persona 1 and it was just moving two slow for me. That, and the controls were just plain awkward. So, hopefully the remake of P1 for the PSP makes it over here later this year or early next year.
So, with that done for now, when I get some time today I'll be starting Persona 3: FES. I look forward to seeing what everyone's been raving about. :)
EDIT: I also started Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice on the PSP, which is just as much dumb fun as the first game. I may be asking for trouble, though, the first game had a bad rap for being far too hard (but it was totally beatable) and I started this one on the Hardcore setting. :p

It's a lot of fun! You guys should definitely download it.
There's co-op and competitive play, both local and over Live.
Even the co-op has a bit of a competitive angle to it since you receive individual scores. We were tied until the last piece, which I grabbed before he could. In retaliation the bastard picked up the ENTIRE puzzle, which prevented me from placing the last piece. He eventually dropped it once he realized that I wasn't going to give in. :p
Still, it was mostly relaxing, being co-op, and we just bantered while putting the puzzle together. You can change the number of pieces in a puzzle to make it more challenging. There's even a Turbo mode that makes putting a puzzle together ridiculously easy by putting an overlay of the puzzle on the screen - you just put the pieces on top of it.

P3 is great. I wish I played more this weekend. I seem to have gaming ADD with my PS3. I fixed my "mini-man cave" again, so I have a longer table with PS3 and monitor. Which now holds more junk...so I have at least 6 game discs laying around. Oh look my Yakuza disc unopened...ooooo...no, must play P3...

The liquidators at Circuit City jack the prices all back up to full MSRP and then give you a 10% discount. They call that "liquidating" and it fools a LOT of people. Doesn't matter if the game was $20 yesterday on clearance or sale, it's now $60 w/ 10% off. In a few weeks or a month, the real deals will be there.
And congrats on the two great games. I liked TW a lot, and need to get back into it, but remember to stick with it for an hour or two, level up and find yourself not dying against random wildlife easily. At first it's a bit hard, but after a little bit you start to kick serious ass.
The Darkness is a gem, of course.
Man, I might need to swing by Best Buy tomorrow. I bought Facebreaker last week for $10 and I loved it so much I've beaten it like 4 or 5 times, got about 600 achievements. I had to get a raincheck on Ninja Gaiden II, so hopefully they do wind up getting that in stock.

I don't think CC has been in the game for awhile now. I know they existed but as a serious competitor to Best Buy? It's been a while for that. I think BB will keep the sales you seek since it gets rid of old inventory. Only so much room and new stuff coming in...what better way to rid yourself of old inventory than with sales that will lure in customers.

Yeah, I've found that any game $10 or less (or slightly more) is pretty much worth the chance. Facebreaker had all those terrible to middling reviews but I've been really digging it, as I've mentioned countless times in this thread. I wasn't expecting much and almost didn't bother. But I'm glad I did. The $10 price point has let me play a ton of great games this generation that I NEVER would have. Fuck reviews, for a cheap sub-$20 game I'm hard pressed to be disappointed. I am playing Brothers in Arms: HH this weekend as well and I'm loving it so much. It's another cheap game I bought on Black Friday that I probably never would have bothered with.
Funny thing is, I know Facebreaker will probably never see a sequel, but I'm really wishing it does. I blame the terrible box-art for the rough sales. :)

Yeah, I noticed that a lot of stuff had gone up before it came back down. 10% wasn't enough off of anything to make me bite. I considered Fallout 3, but I'd rather just wait and get it on Steam instead of saving five measly dollars. I looked at external hard drives, but they were pretty picked over, and some guy was there with his little kids digging though them. The children sent me screaming out of the store. :p
I'll take your advice on Two Worlds. That sounds a lot like Gothic 2, which got a lot of flak from the gaming community and the media. I absolutely loved the game once I could wander around without getting my ass kicked. Even at the end of the game there were big monsters that you lay you flat in one hit, but that was part of the fun. Hopefully I experience the same thing in Two Worlds.

Oh, I'm in complete agreement of how review scores tend to go out the window when you get a game for less than $20. Unless it's an utterly, utterly broken game, you just don't feel the same kind of buyer's remorse as you do at a $60 price point.
That isn't to say that every game you get for $20 or less suddenly becomes great, but it's a lot easier to overlook the faults when you didn't pay $60+ for a turd.

Well I understand. There are some games that no matter how cheap, I just won't buy. Like Kelegacy is talking about Brothers in Arms. I just don't have an interest in a WWII shooter. I don't even play CoD. Cheap games are great but it still has to be within the realm of something you have an interest in or at least possible interest.
