Anyone else interested in a Darkness 2 four pack? Played through the demo today and had a good, if not amazing, time. Figure this might be worth the $37.50.

Get Games has Deus Ex for $15, and it registers on Steam.

I didn't ask for this, but I'll sure as hell buy it anyway.

I had some extra cash burning a hole in my wallet, so I went ahead and got this. I've never played Deus Ex before, is it necessary to understand what's going on in this sequel?

Deal of the day: The Wonderful End of the World for $2.49 (http://store.steampowered.com/app/15500/)

Well worth the price for a fun Katamari-ish game. I had a ton of fun with it.

Agreed. The Wonderful End of the World was the first game I ever got on Steam, and it was a lot of fun to play.

Anybody else get the Mortal Kombat Kollection? It's an OK port, but you can tell it was rushed. Control customization is a bit lacking (it forces you to use the arrow keys for movement, and won't allow 2-players unless you have 2 USB controllers), and I had to go into the .ini settings to change the resolution. Otherwise, these were some of the games of my childhood, and I was always an MK fan more than a SF fan back then, so I thought this was a good purchase anyway.

I was going to say the same thing. It's all cutesy on the outside and pretty simple in what it wants you to do, but will twist your brain into tiny knots from which you will go slightly insane.

I think it hit me around level 10. So you've got a good 7 or 8 levels of cake walk there to feel like an accomplished gamer. After that, the equivalent of your gamer penis falls off leaving a tiny little vagina where other games will fuck you because this little $1.69 gem made you its bitch.

Easy recommendation.

Dinner Date is interesting. It will take about 20-30 minutes of your day but if you're a lonely person, it's probably the best game for you to play on Valentine's Day :)

It's an interactive experience moreso than a game. You just listen to a guy ruminate on his date and wonder if she's going to show up while you fidget.

Dear Esther is maybe less a game you can play and more a place you can go. If that description turns you off, I'd say stay away. If it intrigues you, know that it's an incredibly well-designed place with a haunting and beautiful aesthetic and story.

There's a fight to be had about what exactly constitutes a "game" and whether Dear Esther's lack of conflict or fail-able objectives disqualifies it, but that fight doesn't particularly interest me. It transported me into its world and story in a way no other medium could do, and it earned my $10.

But $10? ... Not so sure. Anyone have any impressions? You hated Dinner Date, didn't you? If you did, I don't think you'll be that impressed with Dear Esther, since it's essentially Dinner Date on an island with gorgeous graphics.

I'm pretty sure I played the mod of Dear Esther and while I thought it was quite interesting as something free, I can't ever see spending money on it. Maybe they've significantly expanded on what they had before, though? They have significantly improved the visuals over the mod. It's definitely not for everyone but if you're willing to pay $10 for what will likely amount to one walk around the island (since I don't know if anyone would go back unless you just want to show it off) then it's worth it. I had no problem paying the $10 but I also was aware of what the thing was before I went into it.

It's a very, VERY linear walk around an island with a fragmented narrative slowly coalescing around you. It's gorgeous (esp. the caves) and it sticks with you after you're done if you are willing to let it just wash over you instead of trying to play it like it's a game.

Hell, it's one of those things where the term game is really a disservice. It's like an interactive art exhibit.

SilentScreams

So basically, find a HD video of someone walking around the island and save yourself $10. :DEh... there's more to it than that, but yeah. It's like Amnesia where you should be in the dark with the lights off and headphones on to fully immerse yourself in the world it creates.

Like I said, it's most definitely not for everyone, at least not for $10, but if/when it goes on sale for $5 or less, I think everyone should pick it up if only to experience the caves, which are simply stunning. I want the guys who made Dear Esther to get hired by Bethesda or Bioware or somebody doing big RPGs so they can design their underground environments.

You can get some fun out of Magicka single player, but why? Each additional player you add exponentially increases the fun. This is a game about accidentally murdering your friends. Why would you even want to play it without any?

Well, that was my question, if it's even worth it at that point. I rarely have the time to coordinate playing a game with others, so most of my time with it would be spent single player.

crazyD
02-17-2012, 07:07 AM
I had some fun tooling around with single player, but completely lost interest in it after playing with friends. Doesn't Steam make coordinating with friends kind of incidental? Just message some people til you have a partner. In any case, there is some fun to be had single player, but I would recommend at least trying the multi.

I wouldn't bother if you are only planning on playing by yourself. I bought the game hoping for a fun single player experience, and I found it to be rather frustrating. It's fun with friends, but by yourself it's just rather tedious, IMHO.

You hated Dinner Date, didn't you? If you did, I don't think you'll be that impressed with Dear Esther, since it's essentially Dinner Date on an island with gorgeous graphics.

I was afraid of that. I like the exploration. But just walking around... eh. I think I need a demo.

I wrote up a big post about how I disagree with it being called one of the most original games of this generation, but when I read it, I realized it was really pretentious, and I was just picking a fight for no reason.

That said, I'd agree that it's a game that steals from a lot of places, to make something that is fairly unique as a whole. Definitely worth trying.

Also, the Alpha Funding bundle (http://www.indieroyale.com) contains some interesting games. Did you like Deathspank? Or Deathspank 2? Because The Baconing is just Deathspank 3.

I personally loved all three games. They're not perfect, but they scratched that loot-fest/hacky-slashy kind of gameplay itch that I'd get from time to time and the story and VO was silly and funny and poked holes at RPG tropes in a pitch-perfect manner.

And for $3.74, you'd be doing yourself a disservice for not getting it.

PoxNora is in the middle of a huge revamp at the moment. They're nerfing a lot of stuff hard to try and counteract the expansion power creep that happened under the last designer. So far it's working pretty well, even if they do seemingly hate Ironfist (making our Northern Cross Templar and our Crusader terrible? WHY?!)

The game is less about who can one-round the other guys powerful units first now. Damage as a whole has gone way down.

Protip: If you take advantage of the Cradle of Civilization pack, you can get all the DLC for about 50 cents cheaper than buying them individually.

Civ 5 is a great game, however I don't see the DLC as adding too much to the game. When you can start from scratch and have the game play out in almost an infinate number of ways. It's going to be a hella long time before you're going to be bored with the default set.

I have been able to get refunds when warranted, even though it is not their official policy. Open a help ticket and explain exactly what your issue is while keeping it professional.

To begin with, it would crash after the initial loading screen. There are at least four things that can cause this, one of which no one understands and thus cannot fix. For me it was easy enough: I had to run it in compatibility mode for Windows XP. Then I get in the game, and have to watch this long-ass, unskippable cut-scene. Then it crashed again. Guess what I had to watch again? On the second try, fortunately, it worked and I was quick to save it. Still, that was a lot more work than it should have been. I thought not being able to access the store was a bug too, but I guess that's just EA being shitty and taking down the DLC store (brilliant).

I still want to know what I'm supposed to be getting with this "Ultimate Box." Apparently it's not any of the DLC.

Odd, I played about 10 minutes of Myst and thought "Hmmm, this is about as fun as picking out a new desktop wallpaper" and quit.

Perhaps I need to give the series a closer look, although I am not really sure what it is to these games that makes people love them.

Damn...now I wanna track down Myth and give it a shot.

Yes, it's an amazing, epic adventure. I've gotten a few COGers to play it now, including LordDon and Purple Santa. That's another game I'd love to play through again.

I've gone as far as shoving the discs off on people to get them to play it, since I own it on GoG now.

Myth 2 is such an incredible game. I have The Total Codex (includes Myth 1 and 2 and all expansions), but I'm not sure if it works well on modern machines.

I can't find my box copy of MYST 4: Revelations and totally forgot to include my CD copies of the soundtracks for MYST, Riven, Exile, and URU (but that was a digital download anyway).

Those first two Myst books were awesome! I didn't like the third one so much. Never been a fan of the games, either. I had part of the comic series, and they were good too.

Man, I would kill for GoG to make the Myth games work well on modern systems. Myth 1 was great but Myth 2 is right up there in my top 10, heck, probably top 5 when it comes to the story.

Which is why I got so mad when they went and did Halo and never looked back at the Myth series. Grr...

Myst fascinates me. I remember reading about the game back in the day and taking away two things: that it was immensely popular with non-gamers and that it was absolute shite. Then a few years ago I started hearing about people who genuinely adore it. I reckon it may be the most divisive game of all time.

For my part, I've never played it. I've often thought about picking it up, but then I think it may taint the enjoyment I get from observing people's opinions of the game by getting too close.

The lore of Myst is really quite fascinating and at the time of its release, it was pretty groundbreaking in terms of using the CD-Rom format and video clips, etc.

That said, I'm one of those people who hate it in principle because of what it did to the traditional point & click adventure genre once all of the clones flooded the market and the first-person slideshows became the defacto 'adventure' game.

Now that both styles of adventure games have pretty good representation in the market and my anger has cooled, I'd really like to give Myst and its ilk a fair shot. I've read a lot of the lore online but I don't think I ever actually finished the first game...

The world of MYST has a very rich, fascinating lore. As I said earlier, it's a shame that it wasn't appreciated and expanded upon more. Sure there were five games and three books, but it's never gotten the respect that many other popular universes get.

I don't think that a first-time player of the series could fully grasp the impact that the games had when they were new. The earlier games are really dated now, and it might be hard to appreciate how lush the worlds seemed at the time. I highly recommend the books though, if you can find them, and giving the games a go might be worth it, but could also be frustrating for someone who hasn't played them until now.

Oh really? Even though MYST "ruined" point and click adventure games? :p

Never mind that Grim Fandango and The Longest Journey came out after MYST, and they were both incredible. Also Syberia, which was pretty good.

MYST also gave us Amber: Journey's Beyond. Watch out for those bees!

Yes... we had the odd point and click adventure that came out but nothing like it was back prior to Myst. I know now that it likely was more due to the rise of FPSs than Myst that killed point & clickers, but I've laboured under the false impression that Myst killed my favourite genre (aside from the random gem) for far too long to forgive it gracefully :)

Speaking of Steam, is anyone else having issues with it tonight? It did some downloads of updates for a couple of my games tonight, but now it won't sign me into my account via the client. I can see my library and it says my account name in the top right corner, but if I try to buy anything in the store (I'm tempted by the Spellforce collection and Waveform) it takes me to a log-in screen and doesn't actually do anything :P

It did update when I shut it down and restarted... but still no log-in.

Edit: Never mind. It seems to be working now :)

God, I loved that game. The skyhook-thingy rollercoaster sections of Bioshock Infinite keep reminding me of Riven's travel system. Never before had a game done that so seemlessly. It blew my freaking mind. It blew me until completion when I saw it on a friend's computer with a 6x CD-ROM and saw the game without delays every time you clicked on things. My Power Macintosh 7500 (http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powermac/stats/powermac_7500_100.html) was probably THE minimum specs.

Haha, I was just in my housemate's room and she was playing Myst on Steam and I commented how I had never played it but I did get Riven one year for my birthday. On the PS1. Every time you changed to a different island? Had to change to a different disc. I doubt this was as big a deal on the PC, where the tower is likely right beside you, but I was playing in my room and had to get out of bed to change discs. Again, not TOO big of a deal. Until you get to the end of the game and are changing islands all the damn time.

I remember my first custom-order PC that I bought with my own money back in 2001/2 or so, just in time to play Morrowind. I remember trying to decide if I wanted to bother putting a floppy disk drive in it or not. In the end I decided against one.
