That is really tempting! If it was a little cheaper I'd bite. I'm going to get the game eventually, but not yet.

Yes. Different publishers, but that still doesn't excuse the price difference IMHO. If anything, the PC version should be the cheaper of the two.

I'm folding my arms and pouting in the corner until they bring it down to the $20 it is on PSN. And then I'm waiting for another 25% sale, because I'm cheap. ;)
As for World at War...I should be more interested, but I dunno if it's because I already bought two game packages (DoW II and the indie pack) or if it's because I haven't played CoD 4 yet, but I've got enough on my plate that I can't be fussed. Besides, I'm sure it'll be $15 at EB come November when Modern Warfare 2 comes out.

But from what I understand the consoles have a top limit for the price. I don't think we've seen any XBLA games more than 1200 points ever (I could be wrong) or any PSN games for more than 20 unless they were full on games for the PS3 or PSP.

Problem solved. I simply setup a new computer and installed Steam there and it magically started working again. :)
I've always used the client for purchasing. When it starts screwing up, I go update IE and that always seems to fix it. This time, I wasn't sure if it was just me, though.

Yea, as long as it's in your account, you can download it anywhere and as many times as ya like.
So if I had a choice between original Half Life or Half Life Source which would be better?

So if I had a choice between original Half Life or Half Life Source which would be better?
Depends on if you want to play mods. Half Life Source won't allow you to play mods based on the HL1 engine. Also, Half Life Source was kinda a half-ass port, they didn't upgrade anything but the engine (so the only notable differences are really just physics and water), so don't expect a huge graphical improvement. I'm surprised they actually sell it separately.
I'd stick with the original myself, and for just around $1.50 more you can get Blue Shift and Opposing Force too, both of which are also great.

The client is basically IE though, all the error messages and sound effects match whatever version of it you have.
Handmade.Mercury
08-17-2009, 08:39 AM
Yeah, Steam uses IE because it's included on all Windows machines and is fairly easy to embed.
Did you guys know that for the in-game browser, all Steam does is take a snapshot of an IE page and convert it to a texture to display in-game? Weird, huh?
MagGnome
08-17-2009, 05:57 PM
I really wish they would redo the client and use something besides IE to power it. It's sluggish far more often than I think it should be. I'd like to see a hybrid between Steam and Impulse, as I think each has great features but is lacking in certain areas.

Do you have some source for that? Resizing the window dynamically alters page layout, and you can highlight text, each of which leads me to believe that the pages are being rendered live by an embedded browser... and that'd just be the most bassackwards method conceivable.
I'm not saying that what you're saying is impossible, but it's a tall enough claim that I'll need to see some sort of citation before I give it any credence.

Sure.
Here is a statement from a VALVe employee. (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?p=8464748#post8464748)
Also, I'm not sure I agree with what you said about resizing. So far in my experiences, I've always had to resize my window because the page DOESN'T dynamically change its layout to fit my screen. The page is always way oversized, and I have to resize my window to see all of it.

Interplay (http://store.steampowered.com/news/2741/) is now on Steam. Only a few titles for now but all of them are on GoG (http://www.gog.com/en/frontpage/) and cheaper with no DRM at all.
As much as I love Steam we all need to be buying these from GoG. Now if Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, and Torment come out then I'll bite.

As for the Fallout Games, it's 17.97 on GoG, and 19.99 on Steam for all three (Fallout, Fallout 2 and Tactics)
Personally, if it's only 2 bucks, I'm more inclined to go with Steam. Plus, I'll wait a bit and see if we don't get a sale sometime soon on them.

The nice thing about GoG is they give extra's that Steam doesn't. You get Soundtracks, manual, Wallpapers, in this case the "fallout bible". Plus they test it to be sure it works on the latest OS's. Steam does none of that. Plus with GoG you don't even need an internet connection once it's downloaded.
Don't get me wrong, I love Steam but I think for some of these older games GoG is probably the way to go.

They way you did it, there is no problem.
If, however, you own a game, and then buy a collection that includes that game, you are unable to transfer the rights of the new copy to anyone else.
Satertek

Go with GoG, you get extras, and it's DRM free. The only advantage of Steam is the 1 click download if you already have Steam installed. (With GoG you've 3 or 4 to click through the installer, which you can still download as many times as ya like)
tldr: Support the little guys. GoG is awesome.

It's been done before too but the point that was being made was that it can be done it's just that mostly publishers don't want to do it 'cus it removes a potential buyer from the market.
You don't have to put it in offline mode nor make sure it's updated any more, if you start steam with out the internet it will ask if you want to restart in offline mode, you click yes and carry on like normal :)

No, probably just a typo.
It's a good deal, but still dropping $75 all at once for any set of games - especially when you can't resell the ones you'd never play - is alot. Pass. (Not really interested in DoW 2, I'd go for it if there were a pack around $30, 35 without it.)

I find it odd how Steam claims that all Rebellion titles are fifty percent off, yet Rogue Trooper is not, and the same goes for Shellshock 2 (although I don't care about the latter). I would probably pick up Rogue Trooper for five bucks, and I will probably pick up the three games that are on sale as it is. Can't really go wrong for that price.
EDIT: Ah, just noticed that the sale covers games published by Rebellion and not exactly all developed. Still odd, though, considering that the deal doesn't specify.

I had a lot of fun with the retail box version. I love city/civ building games. I had one game running with about 5 different trade routes set on autopilot for best sale and purchase prices! The game had a lot of mechanisms in place for micromanagement if you want to do things that way.
However; it had a bug that would crash your game at a random point after about 5 hours into a scenario. Don't know if they fixed that. I'd check the forums, but still it's a pretty sweet game for $2.50.

Not Steam, but since a) there's a bunch of PC bargain hunters (presumably) subscribed to this thread, and b) I didn't get an email this week, so perhaps others also didn't, I thought it may be worth pointing out that Impulse has a pretty good sale line up this weekend.
Includes World of Goo for $10, SoaSE + Entrenchment for $20, Demigod for $20, Sacred 2 for $20 and some other stuff.
If you don't have World of Goo, I suggest you buy it.

Impulse can be great, but just like to point out that you can get the collectors edition of Sacred 2 for 19.99 from Amazon at the moment, so that's a better deal, as long as you've got something else to bump it over $25 for free shipping.

Huh? Just because you are a gamer doesn't mean you are a crazy socially impaired pyromaniac stalker.
That's just it.
Basically, you play though this beautifully presented game, thinking you've got a mission. Until you find out that Tim was in fact the bad guy throughout the game. The twist isn't original, but it was clever. However, going through the AFTER levels of the game, it's basically thrust on you that you're as bad as Tim is. If that's not a slap to the face, I dunno what is.

The horribly pretentious books were a hint though, if you bothered to even look at them. It was a commentary on simple minded gamers doing whatever is put in front of them, regardless of consequences.
Anyone else it would just been clever and artistic or whatever, but Blow is so god damn hostile towards anyone he doesn't believe to be on his level, it was nothing short of a slap in the face. Hell, go collect the super secret stars, gets even worse.

Huh, I didn't really pick up on anything derogatory toward gamers, even in the books. I just took it as part of the story.
I actually really liked the ending.
The way it looks like you are working together to get to the end, only to rewind and see her running I thought was brilliant. I also liked that the star ending showed that it was a good thing that she was being so evasive in trying to not be caught by Tim.
At any rate, I thought the gameplay, music, artwork and style was awesome. The books were... well, I was mostly too impatient to bother analyzing the books. They were not quite straightforward, let's just say that. And, I didn't see how the books and assembled puzzles fit with the game or with each other.
Meh, fun game. Not worth getting upset about. Definitely worth $5.

Problem is that it's a vastly interesting idea, it really is, but he uses it a bit to much to beat you around the head. It could have been done in a much more subtle manner and he would have lorded for it. Of course we've already seen this exact same idea done in that subtle manner that blows blow's attempt out of the water.
I'm of course talking about bioshock, the "would you kindly" programming was a masterpiece. It was a much more subtle and interesting comment on the behaviour of people who are playing the games and it makes blows more... blatant... ending seem a bit childish. Don't get me wrong it's still good and the idea and ending are still fantastic but he let his own self important views on what games are get in the way... it ends up overwrought even when put up agains bioshocks reveal. I mean blow beats you around the head with the concept, bioshock has YOU beat some one around the head with the concept.

I think the revelation would of been greater if you then could make a choice or two afterwards but it just become Tanunbaum (probably spelt wrong) giving you the orders which you blindly follow. However, on top of that it would have been even better if the game just ended there after the realization and Atlas gets you killed and there was nothing you could do about it. I really enjoyed the ending to Mafia when I know many people hated so what do I know.

Unfortunately, you can't. Your location has to match your credit card's issue location.
Bit of a bitch if you are travelling. A few here were bitten by this, I believe.
However, you could just ask someone here to gift it to you and paypal them the money or whatever. I mean, your not supposed to reimburse people for gifted games. However, if you both happened to just incidentally be giving each other gifts at the same time....

Are you sure? It looks like the Bundle price is $10, regularly $20. Each game individually looks to be $5, $10 regularly. I know the problem you are referring to, but I don't see it here. Or, maybe I shouldn't be up doing math at 2 in the morning. :D
Edit: Nevermind, I guess you were looking at this:
Individual price $14.97
Package price $19.99

But, are the games normally $10? Or is that slash just something that is always there?
JRR006
10-09-2009, 12:54 AM
The games are usually $10. They don't adjust the bundle price when the individual games go on sale. That's the error, or ambiguity, or whatever. Buying them in the bundle means they're *really* only 33% off, but in practice it's still five bucks cheaper than buying all three games individually at 50% off but in a perfect world we'd be getting the bundle for ~7 dollars. Whatever the exact math is. It's late and I'm tired.

You can only be logged on to your Steam account from 1 PC at a time. You can have it installed on as many as you like but only run 1 at a time.
This is not entirely true, if you don't mind engaging in a bit of cleverness.
You can still LAN play locally with multiple people using the same account and copy. You'd just log into one machine, start game, then the other, start game. Or the easier, more likely to work way, is to set both to run in offline mode, and then start the game on each machine and just run a LAN game.
This'll work for any Steam game, however, with L4D, since it doesn't seem to support listen servers normally, getting it working means you either have to use some annoying console commands to get the server started, or run the dedicated server in the background, IIRC.
It's tricky, and it's been a while so I'm probably not getting the details right, but it is possible.

I would never do something like that. It's okay to look at my collection as long as I keep in mind that I've purchased them over the course of 15 to 20 years; a majority of them at less than half the retail price.
However; If I were to see the total full retail sum of all the games that I've purchased over the years, mostly at a heavily discounted price, It would probably give me second thoughts about buying the Civ4 package today!

I'm really interested in the Civ IV deal since I only have the original but I'm not ready to commit. Steam would have to be running for you to play them, you can have it set to startup in offline mod if you do not want it connecting to the intrenet. Either way you would have to start up steam to play them if you buy it through steam.

What's the problem with running Steam?
I just don't think that because I bought a game through Steam it deserves to run in the background while I play it. I guess it stems from the fact I ran on a severely outdated computer for a long time and I'd close absolutely every process except the game so I could get those extra FPS. Now I just can't stand to have programs running in the background if they're not directly helping me.
Irrational? Maybe. But dammit irrationality is what makes us human. :p
