New deals, just as expected. Nothing I can recommend though. I do want to say EU3 but just fuck Paradox and their shitty patching. If you don't expect the game to work properly it's great.

I'll second that. Quirky, creative strategy game that also looks great.

Section 8: Prejudice is also a really solid, fun shooter, though I don't know how many people are still playing it online and for me, Tribes: Ascend is probably what I'd boot up instead. Still, for the price you could do worse. It's got a half-decent single player too.
I keep trying to get into Divinity II, but honestly I just never can. I'm sure I'll try again eventually. Some people really love it, though.
Honestly, Driver San Francisco is a good buy at $25, except for the fucked UbiDRM. If you can swallow that, I recommend it. Very solid, creative driving game.
Pretty decent arrangement today, honestly, I just happen to own it all. :P Still not gonna bite on MW2, though, even at $15. I just don't need to know that badly.
EDIT: The trailer for Demolition, Inc (http://store.steampowered.com/app/98600/?snr=1_4_4__617) looks pretty fun. Has anybody tried it? I mean, $2.50.

I went ahead and bought Dungeon Defenders and all but one of it's DLC packs (the Warp Challenge pack, or whatever) as that one wasn't on sale. Something like $12 for all of that doesn't seem too bad. I thought about getting Deadspace 2, but honestly... I didn't like the first one all that much on my PS3.
I spent most of the night playing Mass Effect, and have nearly wrapped up the Citadel. I have like one quest I was really working on there, and had some kind of video card crash that forced me to stop. The game seems pretty buggy. I had to update my video card drivers to get rid of some kind of weird glitch where chairs were appearing to be entirely blue. Had to turn off hardware sound because it was making the sound effects about 500% louder than they should be, so background noise was drowning out all of the voices. Even still, the music in Flux doesn't play properly for me. Still, I'm really enjoying it quite a bit, maybe it just clicks better for me on the PC?

Wow, for me Culcept saga was one of the three worst games of the generation, at least of the ones I purchased. The others being Enchanted Arms and Blazing Aces 2.

I was running into the issue with it removing item from my cart yesterday. Try again in a little bit was what worked for me.
Grabbed Dead Space 2, for after whenever I get around to the first.
I agree with Greed Corp being a fun game and wort the price.
Considered Section 8, but I have enough shooters that I haven't played yet.
Magic is tempting, but I think I'll pass.
Demolition, Inc. is one I think I need to grab, since it is only $2.50.
Europa might be fun, but I don't have time to play all my games as it is, I don't need a huge time sink.

Mags, I grabbed Magic 2012. I came THIS close to grabbing that Ultimate pack with all of the DLC, but decided that $4 was fine and I can always grab the DLC when it's on sale in a month if I'm playing it regularly :)
I looked over my purchases for this sale and I think I dropped a total of $15. There were a lot of things that I'd like to buy but knowing that there will be a week or two of sales in about a month made it easy to resist anything that wasn't under $5 and a daily deal.

Thief 3 is not a bad deal. Funny though, if you look just below the sys requirements, says it is not made to be playable on laptops!
Still hoping to grab thief 1 and 2 sometime, if and when they show up, I think on GOG preferably.

I think that it wouldn't work on certain laptops running specific chipsets.
If only Thief 1 & 2 could be made to work on modern systems without basically rewriting the entire code...

Were you playing it for the single player? Because I will readily admit that the "story line" mode is kind of bad. The only reason to play it is to get used to the game/get new cards (the later of which you can do just by playing it multiplayer).
It's at its heart a multiplayer game. Judging it by the single player is kind of like saying Monopoly sucks to play by yourself (and this is essentially a fancy, RPG's up version of Monopoly complete with the "pass go collect xxx of dollars).

$10 for those five games is a great deal. I've heard that they are fantastic RPGs. I'm probably going to hold off for now as well, considering how many games I already have on my plate. For fans of old-school RPGs though, that is a hell of a deal.

You only need the "Deck Pack 1" and the Expansion. The rest of the DLC just unlocks content that you can earn by actually playing the game. Only the two I mentioned actually add new content.

I've only seen them purchasable in the 5 pack (it was $15 when it launched) but you can't put it on your wishlist as a bundle.
I'll be getting those eventually, but I'm hoping for an even bigger sale come Christmas.

After having played some Burnout: Crash recently, it's very similar to Demolition Inc. in that you don't do a lot of the destruction directly. You're trying to influence the traffic to wreak havoc.
Definately worth $2.50 for a fun afternoon's worth of destruction.

Really enjoying Dungeon Defenders. I've gotten through two bosses on the Adept. I'm emphasizing my buildings rather than my own damage, as I heard that is what you should do (someone said you should have like 19 stat points for your character and the rest should go into buildings). Working out really well so far, my buildings kick-ass! Plus, using the Pyro pet, I get nearly double the damage stat on my buildings.

Bastion is well, well worth $5. They did well with it, of course, so "support the devs" is a less urgent message with it maybe, but if you haven't played it yet, I can't recommend it highly enough. One of my favorite games of the year on any system, and among the best contextual storytelling I've ever seen.
Also the music is just unbelievably good. Bought the soundtrack on day one.

Is there a way to turn off both the Steam client auto-update and game patch auto-update? Or either? I didn't see a way in the Steam settings section.
Thanks!
EternalGamer
12-08-2011, 09:24 AM
I don't know the answer, but I'm curious as to why you would ever want to do that. The auto-update is one of the best things about Steam. It's seriously one of the reasons I am able to enjoy PC gaming now. I don't have to go fucking hunt for patches and updates all the time.
Spectre-7
12-08-2011, 09:31 AM
As far as I'm aware, you can only disable the auto-update on a game by game basis. In the Library, right-click on a game, go to Properties, and somewhere in there you'll find an option to disable updating. Don't remember which tab it's under and I'm not at my computer right now, but it shouldn't be too hard to find.

I forgot about that.
Yeah, just do this:
1) Right Click on any game.
2) Go to Properties
3) Go to "Updates"
4) Select "Never Update this game."

Yeah, I got Homefront on OnLive for $1 or $free or something in a promotion at some point. Definitely not something you should throw $7.50 at unless you have literally no other shooters to play and really, really need to shoot dudes in a sub-par game immediately.
The multiplayer is tolerable, but it's just another modern military shooter with rank-ups and won't be nearly as populated as your Battlefields, your Modern Warfares, etc.

Some stuff I can play, like Torchlight, Defense Grid, SpaceChem, VVVVVVV, older 3D games. But other games, for example Magicka are just a slide show. It's a bit hit and miss, even for indie 2D games, but my guess is that Bastion would be one of the later.

It makes me wonder how players will be douches in the upcoming PS3 game Journey. Characters won't be able to communicate at all, either through speech or text. There's a wordless shout, which might be spammable, but if they're smart they'll limit how often you can use it.

Which is reasonable from an informed consumer standpoint, but I don't give the developers a pass on it. If they chose to put it in their game (and advertise it as such), then they chose to put it in their game. It doesn't get a pass on being low quality IMO just because that isn't what "most" people come to the game for.
Which is increasingly unfair, unfortunately, since more and more often a completely different team of people is making the single player and the multiplayer experience. I really do believe more and more they ought to be separate products (or at least ought to receive separate reviews).

Not really. It was stupidly short, the powers didn't have the same cool effect as in the first, the story was a mess, and overall it was a tremendous meh of a game. I bought that for my PS3, and did not enjoy it... The multiplayer may as well be broken, as 90% of the time people will leave before the level is over, completely fucking you out of unlock points. Beyond that, the mechanics are just kind of weak and unpolished. I also felt that there wasn't a lot of feedback for my actions, especially against larger foes like the daddy longlegs. You'll never know if you're actually hurting it until it's dead, which can take a very long time.

Demigod was good, but I think they shot themselves in the foot with the detailed graphics.
There's a good reason that games like League of Legends, HoN and DotA 2 have simple graphics...because if you want to be able to release new champions frequently enough to keep the game fresh, you can't afford to include so much detail.
I had fun with Demigod, but after a while, playing with and against the same 8 champions all the time gets dull and to my knowledge they only ever released two new ones. I quit long before then though.

God dammit people, go see your family other times of the year. Y'know, when the airports and roads aren't clogged. This god damn obsession with social rituals, stay in your basements like proper virgins.

It's because he is Australian. His anger stems from the disparity in game prices. Look how angry we get over just a few dollars on CDN/US pricing...

Hey if you want to sit in airports for 12 hours because of delays... could be at home, doing (if the rumours and bits of harvested information are correct) the craziest god damn Christmas sale yet.

Isn't Steam a "social ritual" just one about buying stuff...
As much as I dig the event that Valve makes out of these sales (which really is terrific) weighing that as more valuable than time with friends and family seems a bit... skewed.

The social ritual is buying shit for other people while they buy you shit desperately hoping they didn't over/under-spend. It becomes obligation losing all meaning in the process.

He didn't say that at all. He's saying there are easier times of the year to see your loved ones. Why is it more important to see your family in december than say March?

Because sharing ritual is an important part of culture and a form of social bonding.

I'm saying you can do that any time of the year. Christmas is swapping gifts (for adults anyway), rest of the year you can give them.

Never mind. The pricing for that was all fucked up and of course I didn't notice until it was too late. It was $19.99 for the full game. $20.83 for the four pack and $10 for the game and strategy guide

The interface is riddled with bugs so far. Metro 2033 is listed as 0% off, Fable 3 is shown as being 75% off...of an original price of $80. When I went to my Inventory to see my "free gift", there was nothing there.
Hopefully that all gets fixed soon, although the Fable thing is obviously not a big deal, it's just funny.

Now I can't even open the store. Every time I click on the Store it goes back to my inventory, which sits there loading forever. It says I have 15 TF2 items and 3 Steam items in my inventory, but after loading for a couple minutes it says that both are empty.
I'm just going to close Steam and check back later.

Do you have a PS3? I can send you my copy. I'm not going to be able to get back to it for a while.
Nah, I've got an Xbox, which presently has no tv to be connected to. My roommates GF has a copy for Xbox but it's been lent to someone else who has since become difficult to contact apparently. I think they said he might've moved.
I'd like to own it though, because I anticipate massive challenge addiction, especially if there's an endless mode like Totally Insane. If it comes up for a cheap enough price I would be happy to pay back someone on the 20th next month when I get my financial aid.

I love Arkham Asylum so much I've beaten it at least twice. I've logged more hours in the challenges than most MMOs save maybe WoW, and at one point was #40 or so on the PC leader board for Totally Insane.
Arkham City was my most anticipated game this year but then I got sick and that money went elsewhere. Should've preordered on Steam when I had the chance.

Anyone ever played Bunch of Heroes (http://store.steampowered.com/app/111400/)? It's part of the Gift Pile event and a co-op game available as a 4-pack for $7.49. That's $1.88 each.
Looks like a top-down arcade-style shooter. Probably simplistic, but could be worth $2 for some co-op play and an achievement toward the sale event.

Oh, and Just Cause 2: the picture of him riding on the outside of the jet is not just fancy coverart -- you can really do this, easily, in-game. In the picture, the most likely scenario is that you jump off your jet, toward the enemies chasing you. You then use your grappling hook to attach to one of the other vehicles, climb on top, throw the pilot out, and take it for yourself.
This game is pure fun. Get it.
