And meanwhile the price of games at the brick and mortar stores keeps climbing (to the point where they seriously expect me to pay $70 for X-Blades).
To be perfectly fair, that's only $35 per ass-cheek.

I went ahead and bought Sacred Gold for $5 (no tax? Wow!) since I've been curious about the game since playing the demo years and years ago. I'm not sure if it was a good purchase, maybe I need to give it time.
Actually, what I really need is to look up some way to change the resolution!
edit: The dumbest part of the game is it CHUGS when I zoom out to a more useful distance. Come on! How old is this game? What the fuck is it doing that's so hard to deal with?

I'm going to grab Sacred Gold as well. Target has it on sale for $7.50, and I nearly picked it up. $5 is a no brainer. I might toss in one of the Flatout games and Disciples as well, which I've always been curious to try out.

Let me know what you think of Ghost Master! It's a quirky, but fun game. I really need to play the full version - I've only tried the demo.

Ghost Master is pretty fun. I got several levels into it ages ago when I had the full retail version, which disappeared during a move or two. I haven't played it since I got it on Steam back during the sale, but it's a fun combination of a dungeon keeper-kind of strategy game mixed with The Sims and something else I can't quite peg down. And I'm probably not really right with the Dungeon Keeper comparison except in the humour department.
MagGnome
04-11-2009, 04:08 PM
I remember the game getting some comparison's to Dungeon Keeper back when it came out, but I think that has more to do with the two games being in more or less the same genre. From what I've seen they are pretty different.
It's too bad there has never been a good DK clone. Evil Genius and Master of the Monster Lair are similar, but neither one of them captures the magic of Dungeon Keeper.

Are sacred and ghost master permanently reduced in price, or are they some stealth weekend deal?
I already have ghost master from the new year sale but I don't have sacred gold. I also don't want to buy it right now if that's the permanent price as I have plenty of other things to play, but if it's temporary than I just might...

Strategy First is offering their entire Steam catalog at 50% off, which is why the games are as cheap as they are. The sale ends tomorrow (the 13th), so you might want to grab them today.
I decided to pick up Sacred Gold and Disciples 2 Gold, for $15 total.
Hopefully the Disciples 2 pack includes the original game and not just the expansions. The actual pack doesn't list the original game, but in the description it says that it is included.

There is now a single-player demo available for Dawn of War II on Steam.
The game is also 25% off until Monday, making the price $37.49.
I'll definitely be downloading the demo.

That's in good ol' American dollars. They just think I should pay more of them than someone who lives in America, because...I don't know why...
Ultimately it just guarantees I pay them nothing.
Especially when other high profile publishers aren't doing it (Valve, EA, Ubi, etc...) Well, Activision did try it, but the fact that they haven't released a game at a locally inflated price since CoD4 suggests it didn't work out too well.

I shared this with Lon Lon a while back, but don't think he ever got around to trying it. This article (http://lifehacker.com/394410/access-us+only-web-content-with-hotspot-shield) about Hot Spot Shield makes it sound like you could use it to temporarily pretend that you are in the US. Then, disable the shield and download game as normal.
Actually, I'd go with creating a separate Steam account and gifting it to your regular account. Though, I have no experience with this software since I live in the US and cannot say how effective it really would be in this instance. Still, figured I'd let you know about it.

Crap, totally forgot about this, I remember it looked awesome when you first linked me and I bookmarked it but then forgot to get back to it...
I just tried it now, but unfortunately I can't get it working at all. Once it's installed it breaks my internet and can't seem to connect to its server. I think that's probably cos I'm currently in Beijing, though... I was using a proxy to get to youtube and stuff when I first got here but they blocked that a couple weeks back, so they've probably found a way to block this program too.
Maybe it'll work for boratika.
The other problem, though, is that you need a matching credit card to make purchases. So that site would probably let you see the US steam store, but once you tried to buy a game it'd not let you.
I've tried to buy some steam sale games here (steam works fine thank god) but when I get to the purchase stage it tells me my credit card details to not match my address, as it's an Australian credit card, so I've had to get friends back home to gift me the games while I'm here.
If boratika doesn't give it a go I'll hopefully remember this time and try it when I get home in a couple months, as I'd love to use it for Hulu and such too which I normally can't get at home.

Son of a gun! The one weekend I'm away from my computer and they put something up that I really would like to have :(
Time to install Steam on this laptop that isn't really mine:)
The 2009 edition has reviewed very well. This is another of those great games that you can play in the background while doing some work. Thankfully, it has caught up with the more advanced CPU's these days. Back in the old days, you really needed a beast of a machine to play it.

Did you ever try Eastside Hockey Manager? That was a great game. I'm sure there are still ways to get updates for it.

On the topic of these Steam deals, this reinforces my disappointment with XBLA deals and with the upward trend in XBLA title pricing in general. How in the world can I justify spending fifteen bucks on an XBLA title when compared with $10 for the Orange Box? I know it's an "older" game, but I think I'm going to continue swearing off almost all new releases for a while. Money is tight, and there are some great deals if you just wait.
Which is hard to do, but worth it.

I wish the gifting worked different. I would love to buy this for myself, as I don't have Half-Life 2 Episode 1 and Episode 2 and then gift the Team Fortress 2 to a new account for Kat so that we can play Team Fortress 2 together. Sadly, it doesn't appear that you can gift anything except for the Half-Life games 8-(.

I haven't bought a new release since last October. There are simply too many good, cheap games on Steam to justify spending $50 on a new release, let alone $60 for a console game.

The ending of Ep 2 is the best part. You get some nice open area combat with tons of striders. And you have to take them down without a rocket launcher! Very intense, and a ton of fun. I would highly recommend it. Also, the story gets very interesting, and has me waiting excitedly for the third.
I thought Ep 1 was nice, but they didn't really add much new. It was just a continuation of the original game. I actually gave up, and didn't get around to beating it until Ep 2 was about to come out. Ep 2 blew me away, and I would call it the best part of the Half Life story.

I think what is happening is devs are looking at sales and once they start to tail off they wait a bit then slash the price to the point that people who might have brought it end up doing so. Given that there's no physical stock to worry about it's an amazing idea. In other words we are going to see more devs slashing prices to weekend deal levels outside of the weekend deal as time goes on. This is a good thing in one way, and evil evil thing in another.

I think what is happening is devs are looking at sales and once they start to tail off they wait a bit then slash the price to the point that people who might have brought it end up doing so. Given that there's no physical stock to worry about it's an amazing idea. Yep. and it is going to suck to be the guy who buys a game full-price 2 days before it goes up for a deal.

The people who care about the deals, I think, will mostly hold out until there is a deal on the game he is interested in. I know that I wait for the Steam deal before I will purchase something, particularly because I have such a backlog of other Steam deal games that I rarely need a game right now. Although, there are the exceptions: I wanted L4D right away and my wife bought it for me as an early Xmas gift when it was brand new.

edit: that was a rambling mess.
If you brought something full price i'd presume you where happy buying it at full price. The value of the product to you isn't any less because a few later it goes on sale. You where just unlucky but only because there was a sale just then, if there hand't been a sale you wouldn't have been thinking 2 days later "man i wish i hadn't spent so much money on this game i should have waited until it came on sale" unless the game really really sucks or such.

No... I know what you mean.
But even if you're happy buying the product at its full price...unless you are Donald Trump you are going to be pissed that you didn't' wait.
I know I'm looking at the cost of Defense Grid now and wishing I had waited a few weeks and bought it now. The game is still a blast and I'm glad I purchased it...but still paying 5$ for a game to me is better than paying 10$ for the same game.
edit: Its why some stores offer price matching for sales. If you buy the game within a few days of a sale, and some stores will reimburse you the difference between the price you paid and the sale price.

I get ya but steam is unique if your buying it on steam at full price your likely paying more already than you'd be paying for a boxed copy. For almost any steam game you can find a box copy cheaper even with out factoring other site sales. But that extra money is worth it to have the game on steam. So yes you can be pissed that you didn't get it in the sale but given that you have no future site didn't know it was coming and where still happy when you first brought it and you are already buying it at an larger price then it's a bit silly to get too upset. Ya it would be nice to have those $20 back but you didn't bank on having them so you've not lost anything you've just not be lucky and gained something.
Having said that it would be nice if steam would give you some kind of store credit if you brought a game in the 2 days before it went on sale. Maybe not even the full difference but getting some of the money back in store credit would at lest ease the pain a little.

Everything is eventually cheaper, you pay full price to get it earlier. You have already played for several weeks. You payed extra for the ability to play it earlier and longer than the rest of us. Don't let it bother you and regret the fun you've already had.

I played the demo of Universe at War a while back and didn't think it was all that great. It's basically just a generic RTS IMHO. I've already got dozens of Steam games to play, so I can safely pass on this deal.
Plants VS Zombies, however, is very tempting.
Also, did anyone check out the new Global Steam Achievements feature? You can see what percentage of players have unlocked an achievement in any game that has them. I was surprised to see that only 1.9% of players have launched the gnome in Episode 2. Of course I'm not one of them. :o

Not including steam sales (and valve specific products), steam typically maintains slightly higher prices that retail stores, as they tend to offer the games for slightly below recommended pricing. This occurs mainly after a games initial release date as B&M want to diminish leftover stock.
Europe especially, because of how steam does conversions has higher than most retail store costs.
This is generally because publishers other than valve do not want to alienate their B&M stores by giving cheaper prices to DD.
For example: Fallout 3 on Amazon : 40$ (http://www.amazon.com/Fallout-3-Pc/dp/B000UU5T7E/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=software&qid=1241848156&sr=8-2)
Fallout 3 on Steam: 49.99 (http://store.steampowered.com/app/22300/)

Cheaper when those retailers import from the UK or US taking advantage of favorable exchange rates.
Under normal circumstances they pay the same as us:
http://www.amazon.de/Ubisoft-Fallout-3/dp/B000VJF0I2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1241860620&sr=8-1
But you're right in that retail is (almost) always going to be cheaper, except on weekend deals. They have to clear shelf space, Amazon does too, but to a lesser extent as they've got whole warehouses to stash stuff in. Steam doesn't have either problem, so they can leave prices at retail to ensure box copies don't go to waste.

Ok i'll just jump down the list of steam games and pick out some of the big titles. The guildwars stuff is £2 or so more than you can find it boxed, The Last Remnant i can find for £18 (not a sale) rather than £30, Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor £15 rather than £30 at play.com, wheelman £17 rather than £30, hawx £17 rather than £34, Drakensang £18 rather than £30.... in fact the only game i've checked on that hasn't been less somewhere online from a major retailer (not counting sales) has been empire total war and that's mainly because it has steamworks.
I very much doubt that it's much different in the US either. It is, as has been pointed out, to do with publishers having to be weary of brick and mortar stores. Even valve had this problem with the orange box for example. Stores hate being undercut by DD and at the moment they still count for to many sales to risk them shunning your game. So games on steam tend to be sold at the RRP where as stores get the games at a much lower price and compete with each other at how far below RRP they can go.
I buy game on steam because to me games on steam have more value and are more useful to me. So i don't mind spending the extra money.

Gah, 50% off the Sam and Max titles is tempting. Been waiting to pick them up on sale for a long time, but I think I might hold out a while longer and see if they ever make it to the golden 75% at which I buy pretty much anything.
Also, I decided at the last minute that I want to get killing floor while it's got the preorder discount.
Again, the stupid Aus store is a little bit cheaper than the US store so does anyone want to be friendly and gift it to me and let me paypal them the funds?

Hey, it was just brought to Steam... what's the hurry? If you miss the sale you are out of $0.75. It isn't the weekend deal... maybe it will be? Although, $6.74 for two quality games really is pretty good...
What is annoying about the way Steam does business is that I purchased the Indie pack a while back and already have Trials 2, so purchasing their Bone-breaking pack that includes it isn't as good a deal since I don't get the rights to another copy. That has to be illegal somehow.

What is annoying about the way Steam does business is that I purchased the Indie pack a while back and already have Trials 2, so purchasing their Bone-breaking pack that includes it isn't as good a deal since I don't get the rights to another copy. That has to be illegal somehow.
With how Orange Box worked, I figured they all worked that way.
When I ended up buying a duplicate X-Com TFTD and it didn't give me an extra one... appalled is one way of putting it.

You have to understand that Valve themselves published the Orange Box, whereas the other titles they'd have to get permission of the publisher to allow gifting like that.
It does suck not being able to gift them away, but thats one of the downsides of digital distribution. Thankfully (at least for me) the sales and convenience make up for it.

Actually, for five bucks, why the hell not?Yeah. I had a copy of Overture that I dropped $25 on digitally directly from the company, but I have no idea where I stashed the installs so for $2.50, why not? And I had picked up the Black Plague/Requiem pack on Steam a while back, despite having the box copy of Black Plague. It's worth it for the convenience of being able to install it whenever I upgrade my systems without having to hunt for the boxes.

As I do with all horror games, I am going to turn off the light, throw on some headphones and play this at night. So the darkness will be just fine for me.
I actually couldn't finish Clive Barker's Undying because of playing horror games this way. I had to turn the lights on. That game freaked me right the fuck out.

Yeah. The Penumbra games are some of the few 'horror' games that give me a true feeling of dread and, dare I say it, fear. They're the kind of games that have you checking over your shoulder if you make the mistake of playing them late at night after everyone else has gone to bed.

You know, I tried the first game on GameTap a while back. It was very creepy, very sneaky and scary. You'd creep along, and... nothing would happen. You'd creep along some more... and nothing would happen. OK, suspense is good, but keeping it up for so long bored me and I stopped playing.
But, $5? That is hard to beat. So many here are so gung ho, maybe I'll try again and go a little further.

They localized the currency so that we pay in pounds, not in dollars, and then suddenly decided to charge brick and mortar prices instead of internet prices. Yeah, the sad thing is, aside from the DLC, the Mods and such -really- make the game not only more enjoyable, they add so damn much. Like right now I've got one that completely revamps the Frostcrag spire, and another that completely replaces the stock music (It's not all 100% the best, but a lot of it is better than Vanilla)...they can really add a lot to the game that it's lacking originally, like balance issues as well.

Pretty sure it would support mods. Other Steam games do. As long as the mod doesn't affect the executable, there shouldn't be an issue.
I've modded STALKER without issue on Steam.

The monster-leveling in Oblivion is ineed annoying. I need to download a mod to fix that before I start playing the game again.

As I recall, there is a mod for that very complaint. Heck, there is a mod for every aspect you can imagine. For instance, there is a mod the gives a unique (beautiful) cover to every book in the game.
$25 for 3 and 4, plus all the expansions? How could I NOT get this? I mean, I have 3 already, plus the expansions, but not having to have the discs is worth the ~$10 extra.

Although their policy states otherwise, if you open a ticket with Steam and work with them and are still unable to start the game, you might have success getting a refund.
I bought Stubbs the Zombie during a weekend deal ages ago and it just would not work. Tried all of their suggestions, but eventually had to give up. They are reasonable people and not robots: they sometimes make an exception to the rule.

I'm still trying some different things. I'll definitely be opening a ticket up with them, though. It does generate a crash report that is pretty readable, so I'm sure they'll sort it out.

Holy shit! Tachyon: The Fringe (http://store.steampowered.com/app/32760/) is up for $9. Guess what I'll be buying tonight?
I bought this game a long time ago, and never gave it enough of my time. Makes me wish I brought my flight stick with me when I moved to the other coast, though...

Eh, only a dollar off. Not in any hurry. Waiting on the weekend deal to see if I waste another $5-10 bucks this weekend ;)
Edit: Oh, nice NovaLogic put all their games on Steam. Wish it would take my old Delta Force cd-key :p

Empire: Total War (http://store.steampowered.com/app/10500/) is $24.99 which is 50% off.
The Special edition is also on sale for $34.99. I'll have to pass, not my kind of game.

Woot. I have found it a few times at $20-25 on Amazon, never picked it up though. Wonder whether to buy the box version of Amazon or the digital off Steam for the same price. Basically, it'll boil down to how impatient I am heh.

Not everywhere. In fact, as far as I know Steam is the only place that is selling it for $10. It's even $20 straight from Popcap.
Don't be too upset Boratika, although that does kind of suck.

That's happened to me many a time. I try to just shrug it off, but sometimes you can't help but feel miffed.
Still, you're enjoying the game....right? :D
