How is staying ON TOPIC in a thread whining?

Whining about staying on topic != staying on topic

Im a baby huh? Well the next time you make a thread about a specific thing I'll remember to post the opposite of what the threads is about.

I'm not going to petition this thread, but since it was brought up (not by me) I figured I'd throw my opinion out there. It annoys me... plain and simple.

I find it quite amusing that the people bitching about Impulse deals being "off topic" have taken the thread off topic for far longer than any Impulse deal ever has.

What kind of crap do you mean? The information relevant to the still young business model of Steam or the bitching of the information relevant to the still young business model of Steam?
What I'm saying is, if the subject didn't have enough traction to survive it's own topical thread, what makes people think it's anymore welcome or desired to just dump the same subjects in an existing unrelated thread instead?

If I made a bunch of threads about my naked bum, and no one was interested and they promptly dropped off the page with few if any posts, would it become somehow more acceptable if I just started posting my naked bum giant posterior in the cosplay thread instead? Should I expect legions of people suddenly defending my right to dump pictures of my brown eye in another thread, even though they hadn't the slightest interest in seeing it the first time?

It's just that the perspective seems skewed here.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed that. I've posted about maybe 10-15 or so Impulse deals in this entire thread. Altogether a tiny fraction of the posts in this thread. Yet the last several pages are almost entirely off topic.

I understand your point, I really do. The difference here is that the off topic information that sometimes fills this thread is still relevant. It's not one of those threads where people reply just to fill the pages. While it is not abiding by the specified topic, it is still both relevant and factual.

Compared to other threads, when someone posts about how they like pancakes, its validity is quickly lost to comments of waffles, sexuality and attempts at humor. That kind of mess offers no more than a high school notebook shared amongst teenagers.

The problem with this thread on the other hand, would be completely justified with a minor edit of the topic title.

Hey Mags, have you checked this (http://store.steampowered.com/app/40350/) out? I've seen the Secret Files Tunguska game around before but never tried it. The little trailer for Lost Horizon makes me want to check them out.

I need a bit more time to get into an Adventure Game mood again. It usually strikes in the winter but I've got a bunch just begging to be played if I can tear myself away from Etrian Odyssey and a bunch of other RPGs.

Nah, there is no game to Garry's Mod. It's more of a tech demo then anything.

Used to have a bunch of stuff ... now it doesn't, costs money, and the "game" is to essentially spawn things to shoot or that will kill your friends until the server dies on you.

From what I understand it's sort of a creation tool to play around in. There's no "game", per se.

This is such crap. There are lots of custom game modes available to play, and I've played quite a few fun ones. Garry updates the "mod" frequently, and it is always getting better and more accessible to programmers/designers. One of his most recent projects has been being able to download player-made models, effects, weapons and more while playing on the server.

You get a lot for your money; $5 is a steal.

edit: just look at Steam's stats! (http://store.steampowered.com/stats/) It's consistently one of the most played games on all of Steam.

Oh, OK. Here I was thinking you were just unfamiliar with how Garry's Mod works, since, to be fair, there's nothing quite like it; Little Big Planet is the nearest analogue. Now I know you're lying to fellow CoGers, or, at best, deliberately misinforming them about the nature of the game to dissuade them from purchasing it. That's awful nice of you! :)

I bought the game in 2006, when it first came out. There was nothing to do but pose characters. If people have created LBP type games with it that's great. It's just not how I'd want to spend my time.

The Midweek Madness sale is Cities XL (http://store.steampowered.com/app/35510/) for $4.99, down from $19.99. I've heard good things about this one.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light (http://store.steampowered.com/app/35130/) is out on Steam today for $14.99.

Finally, Tropico 3 Gold (http://store.steampowered.com/sub/6253/) just hit Steam for $29.99. I cannot recommend this game enough!

I know that two of these aren't sales, but at least they aren't links to Impulse, either. :p

Oh, and does anyone else get slightly annoyed when Steam changes the size of the banner on the main page of the store? I don't like having to resize the window every time they decide to enlarge the image.

What pissed me off were the weapons. Five-seveNs that shot 9mm, Glocks that shot 5.7, shotguns in".60 caliber".

It well exceeded my limit for blatant inaccuracy.

Combine that with rubbish performance and an irritating dialogue system, and it had a quick death for me.

I don't know if this is an option or not (or if it will even help), but that's happened to me before on a few games randomly and when it asks if I want to allow Steam to make changes to my computer, if I hit "no", it then will load. Not sure if that'll even help, but still.

You know, maybe it's all the Zombie Escape I've been playing, or maybe it's not just a very good campaign, but I tried the new L4D campaign today and just found myself fucking bored.

It's so plodding, and lacks any sense of immediacy. It's just marching through the shooting gallery until the next scripted wave of zombies pours in. Woo.

Despite the poor design on some of the maps, I really like the sense of emergency and tension the Zombie Escape mod for CSS has, and that just isn't present here anymore.

It's not just you Arcane, I missed L4D entirely, and found the sequel to be lacking the awesome I was led to believe. It's an ok game, but a far far cry from the 'different everytime you play!' I was led to believe (maybe wrongly).

Well, I was playing the L4D1 version.

I never picked up L4D2 because I never felt any of the games were worth more than $20, let alone $50, but I was thinking of finally nabbing it for the $6.

But after my playtime last night, well, it just didn't do it for me. And with knowing already how bad the AI is in L4D2, than sort of puts the nail in the coffin. It just feels rote, and predictable. All the "AI director" really means is that if you've not shot anything for X amount of time, it will throw a special at you.

If you're playing by yourself, you're not really playing L4D. Trust me on this. I love the game to death but I'll be the first to admit that the survivor AI is some of the worst. Half of that game is to vocally strategize with your team and even if the survivor AI was great, that would still be impossible. The director AI on the other hand, works quite well.

I've played L4D with other people. It's really not as different as you'd like to posit here. The gameplay issues are the same, the only difference is when you play it online, you run into the groups that treat it like it's a WoW raid.

I could see it being a part of roleplaying if it actually had any impact whatsoever in the game, but it doesn't. No one calls you by the name, you don't have a locker with the name on it... nothing. You only ever see it on the save file. You could still think of the character as having whatever name you want. If you wanted to roleplay the character as Gaylord Shepard, a man who spent his entire life bullied because of his name, so now he is emotionally scarred, and would literally kill anyone who called him by his first name, fucking go for it. Who cares if the save file says "John Shepard" on it?

You do answer a set of questions and can approximate some of the major decisions from the first but there are a lot of smaller variables that don't carry over.

I could have put more effort into trying to rebuild my 360 Shepherd but I'm lazy :)
I have a hang up about replaying games as it is, but replaying a game just to do exactly the same shit over again bores me to extra bitter tears.

I tried just going back and playing as something totally different, but it just felt wrong. Jennifer Hale's voice was still there but now my Shepherd looked all weird, and I don't care for guy Shep, he's boring.

Heh, it's strange that. I'm terrible with sliders and simply went with "good enough" in ME1. I've improved with the damned things a little more these days, but even if I make a technically "better" Shep, it's just wrong to me.

There is a save game editor (http://mod.gib.me/masseffect2/saveedit_rev25.zip) for ME2 that lets you change ME1 flags around. Also Shepard's first name among other things.

Disciples 2 Gold for $5 is pretty much a no-brainer. From what I recall, a great game along the lines of Age of Wonders and HoMM.

Also...Railworks 2 is %50 off week ;)

Question: I already own Disciples 2 Gold (Even though I don't know what it is, someone just recommended it. A symptom of my Steam sale addiction.) but I don't know which game I am meant to play first: Gallean's Return or Rise of the Elves?

From what I've googled, Gallean's is the original release plus the first two expansions and Rise is the subsequent expansion, but it contains the original game and then follows on. So... does Elves contain the original in its original form, or with additions form the expansion?

contain the original in its original form, or with additions form the expansion?

No idea...what I read as well showed that there were a ton of expansions. I would assume that starting Gallean's Return would give a separate campaign that Elves...so I would just start with Gallean's.

Edit: Start with Gallean's. It is the same executable, so it's fully updated.

To get it to run:

1) If you do not have Steam installed to the default directory, then add the \Steam directory to your Path environment variable.

2) Find the exe for Disciples and right-click change compatibility to XP SP3 (you'll find it in the 1st party Steam directory under your username and not the usual 3rd party install directory)

3) Right click on the game in your Steam Library and disable the Steam Overlay.

UAC will trigger on start-up, but other than that, it will work fine.

Playing in windowed mode doesn't seem to play either.

Does anyone actually understand what's going on in Disciples 2? The tutorial might as well be non-existent, as it explains NOTHING. The interface is clunky, to say the least, and the graphics are dated enough that I really have no idea what I'm doing.

It looks like a game I'd enjoy if I could only figure out what the heck is going on.

I have played much Disciples 2. It's actually one of my favorite games. Any specific questions or just general?

One thing that's a bit different from other games of the genre: The land you control "creeps" out every turn. You push out during your turn, the other players during theirs. Each race has a unit that plants "flags". Planting these flags next to resources such as gold or red crystals for example will cause the resources to be under your control. Flags can be removed by the other player as well.

Thieves are wicked. Especially with poison. You can soften up an enemy unit for a turn or two with your thief before attacking.

If the leader of a party dies, the group limps back home so you can bring him/her back to life.

I'm quite surprised Mags is having a hard time. He plays a lot of these types of games. If memory serves, it's all mouse clicks and fairly basic. I didn't go through a tutorial to learn how to play. Maybe it's just me and Disciples. We click.

No Joker is kind of a bummer, but then I never quite liked the Joker levels, especially the stealth ones.

What's weirder is just how much brighter everything is. It doesn't seem quite as dark and brooding somehow, the colors are more intense and so is the lighting.

Might turn down the brightness, see what that does.

Arkham Asylum is one of the few games I've bought for more than one platform. I've sunken in so many hours into the combat challenges, the fighting system is deeper than it seems. There's nothing quite like finishing an entire round with just one continuous combo and not get hit.

My roommate likes to call Batman's combat system "Press Square to win."

I think it's a great game, but I'm kind of inclined to agree with him when all of the combat situations in the game can be handled with two buttons. I felt like there needed to be more rooms full of armed thugs.

J Arcane
10-22-2010, 12:09 PM
The combat in game seldom really requires of the player the level of aptitude required to really get into it.

Try the challenges, or going for streaks in the infinite mode.

Yeah, it's only two buttons (technically, there are other commands and moves in the game), but the timing and strategy required to keep going on up to a x200 combo is not as simple as it seems.

Superman's Dead
10-22-2010, 12:14 PM
Yeah, to really feel like Batman you have to do quite a bit more than just use two buttons, especially if you're playing on a harder mode. I loved the combat system, because you had to think a few steps ahead for the harder encounters.

That it needed so few buttons, and could do so much is an indication of its excellence. That's proper design, it's about simplifying the controls while maintaining perfect function, not memorizing obnoxious 10 button combos. The depth is in the mechanics.

Too many games fall in the Ninja Gaiden 'dial-a-combo' rap. Just because its a two-button combat system, doesn't mean its easy.

It's called The Polynomial (http://store.steampowered.com/app/67000/), and it's a spaceflight game wherein the universe is made of music...or something like that. It looks intriguing, and at only $10 it might be worth a shot.
