Wall of text - Skip to bottom for 1 sentence version =/

So, I've had hot water problems at my apartment since December 24. People have come out numerous times to replace parts / replace a few leaky pipes, etc. My hot water has been fluctuating between hot / cold. I can wake up in the morning and the water will be cold / warm.. I have to run the hot water until the hot water heater kicks in and then wait 15 mins until it warms it up (50 gallon tank). Tonight, I did that, let it all warm up before hand, because I felt like taking a bath. I turned on the water and get in while its filling, before it even gets half way full the water turns ice cold.. awesome.

I sat there half warm / cold for a while until it warmed up again and managed to squeeze in a 5 min scorching hot shower..?

My damn gas bill for this thing has been $45-50 since June. I run no other gas appliance other than the hot water heater.. that is waaay too high for a hot water heater. My heat does run on gas, but I do not use it... in fact its somehow routed through the hot water heater, I turned it on tonight to test it and it blows cold air anyways.

I looked at the hot water heater tonight and I read all of the details / fine print posted on it, and it says the average / estimated gas bill for the hot water heater is $170 yearly.. I just hit that in like 3 months. I mean really.. I take like 5 showers a week, sometimes less because its so damn cold now, and I sit at a desk all day, I don't really perspire... details

That hot water heater is fucked.

Anyways, I put all of this in the maintenance online request form for my apartment complex people and yelled at them saying it was unacceptable in much better wording.. and it made me feel better, so I thought I would share this with the internets of CoG ;)

shortened: my hot water heater is fucked / has been for 3 weeks / since June and I bitched at my apartment management people and it felt good... now lets see how long it takes for them to respond.

Anyone else have any ranting stories they want to share?

Ranting threads are my favorite (thought I'd add some positive energy before I start).

Why the fuck did I just have to pay $1000 for vaccinations? I'm traveling to South East Asia and need a lot of vaccinations to keep from getting sick with weird, already cured diseases. I also have traveler's insurance. What the hell is wrong with them?

What's so awful about preventative medicine? Why do I have to pay extra to keep from getting sick? Don't you assholes at Providence have to pay more when I do get Japanese Encephalitis or when some parasite is eating my liver or whatever? If I had bigger balls I would just coat myself in honey and wade into a swamp in Thailand and fuck your asses over with my medical bills.

I thought I lived in an industrial nation, in the 21st century. So what the fuck? I can't get a few shots without paying a thousand dollars???

Woah, now that's seriously fucked up. I've travelled extensively and had many rounds of vaccinations in my lifetime, and I've never paid more than $80 - $90 at the travel clinic.. and that's usually because I opt to get the 'recommended but not mandatory' shots that you have to pay for.

You thought my first rant was bad? Get a load of this: my thermodynamics professor, who puts emphasis on English<->metric conversions, doesn't know how to convert pound mass to pound force.

On Wednesday she spent a fair portion of the lecture explaining how to convert pound mass to pound force. She was completely wrong. The point of lbm is that, with standard Earth gravity, 1 pound of mass weighs 1 pound. She told the class that you have to multiply by the acceleration due to gravity, so that 1 lbm weighs 32.2 pounds. If she had been talking about *slugs*, sure. 1 slug weighs 32.2 pounds. Pretty big fucking slugs, I know.

So I corrected her on this in class, but she dodged an admission of being wrong by explaining she was just telling the class how to convert mass to weight. It is important to note that this conversion is one of our HOMEWORK PROBLEMS. We turned it in this morning and she posted the solution. Naturally, her solution for that problem is completely wrong.

So I just wrote her a three paragraph email describing what was wrong, another way to solve the problem that derives the correct answer, and why there might be cause for confusion.

Actually more than that I hate the use of the word "weigh". God dammit, it should only be used to describe WEIGHT, not mass. Both English and metric units screw this up, and it bothers me to no end. Pound force and newtons are the only ones to get it right, but nobody uses newtons in common dialogue. I actually just recently discovered that a ton is a unit of mass, not weight, and feel betrayed.

What?! Pound force is fine.

Pound mass, though? Fuck that.

Well I guess pound mass is responsible for pound force, but I'm not really sure why one pounds so much though? Explanation?

Anywise, my objection to pound force is that it is a unit of force that is useful for calculating weight, but cumbersome for every other type of force. So you need to throw a constant into any other force calculation. It's all arse-backwards - gravity is where you should need to multiply by a constant (for a given altitude) because gravity is what you are calculating the effect of. Your units of measurement should be able to accept the measurements you have and not require being multiplied by an arbitrary constant. But I was raised metric and was using SI years before I ever learnt any imperial, so maybe it's just a perspective thing.

But aside from that, it is solely responsible for people using the word "weight" when they mean "mass".

Mass and weight are completely different in metric/SI. They don't have the same numerical value, which was the whole point of pound force.

From the sounds of things, life would have been easier for you if you'd just never had to deal with imperial.

Lint of Death

From your explanation I am convinced you are thinking of pound mass. Slugs and pound force work together exactly like kilograms and newtons, respectively.

But aside from that, it is solely responsible for people using the word "weight" when they mean "mass".
Really? I mean, I guess "weighing a ton" fits into that problem, but when I hear the word 'weigh' in conjunction with a mass, it is invariably with metric. Just look at nearly any produce item, the 'net weight' will be in grams; any English-speaking person who prefers metric will say they 'weigh x kilograms'. How could an imperial unit be responsible for all of that?

boratika
01-17-2009, 11:34 AM
How could an imperial unit be responsible for all of that?

Because they have the same numerical value. So something with a mass of 1lb also weighs 1lb. So in imperial they are interchangeable and still accurate. It's how the interchaneability of the terms came about. My parent's generation grew up with this, where weight was measured in pounds and when metric rolled around, pounds changed to kilos so it seemed natural that you weighed a number of kilos. Only it wasn't that sort of pound, just another completely different thing with the same name and numerical value.

Of course another problem is that you have the verb "weigh", but no equivalent for finding a mass. So it seems that the process is to determine its weight on account of the name. (Of course it is for measuring its weight, which in turn gives you it's mass.)

I figured I would go off topic with a rant.

So, last Sunday night, my girlfriend gets a call that her mother in law has passed away. So she flew out to NY The next day to help her dad attend to things. She is gone the week and she flies back into town tomorrow around 3. So I email my direct boss and ask for a bit of time off so I can go get her and bring her home since I work sunday (1:30-Midnight).

Got told no, we were short to many people for me to have part of the afternoon off to go get her.

I am ever so pleased by this. Truly.

Last month we had our annual reviews, which occurred right after a reorganization, and I was moved into a new department. My new boss had worked with me for all of two months before she had to evaluate my performance. She ranked me very low. Despite every one I worked with prior to the re-org giving me great feedback. I was rated low because I can't be moved into any other position in the new lab I'm part of largely because I'm fairly narrow in my scope of tasks. Never mind that I could move to any position with a modicum of training. And of course, no one else in the lab could move into my position without some training as well. I was pretty upset by this.

Fast forward one month when I finally get to add my inputs to my evaluation. I laid all the above out, and said that I didn't feel that my efforts for the prior 10 months had been recognized and that the rating was less than fair and that I think that management is not going to support my efforts. I was honest, but not very diplomatic when giving this feedback. 20 minutes later the head of the lab e-mails me demanding I set up a meeting with him, my boss and HR.

There are only a few outcomes I can foresee from this:
1) I'm going to fired (not likely, but not impossible)
2) I'm going to be asked, or offered to move to a different team (probable)
3) I'm going to get more personal hands on attention from management to develop my skills so that I fit in the lab better (possible, maybe even the most likely as there are few openings in the company)

The issue is that I love the job I have and want to keep doing it, but I'm going to be a failure in my career if that is all I do. Naturally I don't have time to really expand out further and become a cog in the machine that is my lab, because if I did, then my current job wouldn't be needed.

Even worse. I'm good at my job. Damn good. But no matter how good I am, I will never succeed if I remain in the position I love and stay in this lab.

Fuck stupid HR policies that force you to have a broad range of knowledge with no depth if you want to be successful.
