View Full Version : [Rumor] New GTA Game This Year?

This story gets the dreaded rumor tag because, after all, it does come from a rumor column. But Game Informer magazine's Loose Talk feature is hinting that a new Grand Theft Auto game - not DLC, not a handheld version, but a full on console sequel - is on the horizon for late this year. "We're not talking about new DLC or a collection of previously available DLC, we're talking about a full retail game. We expect this title to follow the suit of previous GTAs and use a subtitle such as GTA: San Andreas, etc. Tokyo might be a possible setting for the game, but details are non-existent at this time."Color me optimistically skeptical. On the one hand, the real heavy lifting on a game like GTA was in the creation of the engine and related tools. A sequel utilizing the same foundation would take a lot less time to build. You also could have had the writing team working on this before the programmers began, giving a little more lead time. Rockstar did crank out GTA: Vice City just a year after GTA 3 dropped. And you know executives at Take-Two are just salivating over the thought of having another chart buster like GTA 4 on the slate for 2009.

On the other, it's a hell of a secret to keep under wraps even this long. The need to model and program an entirely new city, especially one as different from New York as Tokyo is.

I don't see it happening quite so soon. I'd think they'd want to get the most out of DLC sales before dropping another full-on sequel... Spring 2010 is my guess.

Every time rumors of a new GTA start to swirl they always list Tokyo as the most likely city.

I will buy it on the first day and love it. And, despite the always mentioned Tokyo, I want me some Tokyo. Or, really, just Vice City.

Toronto for sure :)

It would be cool, but I seriously doubt a new GTA console game this year.

While I'm still skeptical, I was AMAZED at just how much information Rockstar was able to keep hidden about GTA4 until literally the last 6-8 weeks before its release. They seem to do this much better than most other companies, and frankly, I kind of like the way they hold information back on games that are still months or years from release.

Additionally, I could see this being possible because game development happens in cycles. In the final months leading up to GTA4's release, I'm sure that the vast majority of the modelers had already completed their main tasks. Their concept artists had already moved on to the next game, and modelers could be starting work already.

That said, I do think it's a bit unlikely. Weren't the plans for *two* DLC expansions to GTA4? We know about Lost and the Damned, but what about the second? Or am I misremembering?

What if Rockstar could somehow partner with Google and use Google Maps to create a GTA for the entire country. That would blow my mind.

No matter when it comes out or what city it's based in, etc...please just get rid of the phone for anything other than necessary mission conversations.

If I want to grudgingly head to a bar with people I don't like that well, I'll do it in real life.

I never understood the desire to see GTA do a foreign city like Tokyo. A lot of the Rockstar charm, pop culture references and tongue in cheek social satire would be lost.

I know they did do the London expansion years ago, but they did have an awful lot of material to mine to make that one work.

Rockstar didn't do the Londo expansion, DMA Design (the original creators of GTA) did. DMA Design was a UK-based (Scotland, actually) studio that is now known as Rockstar North. So there's that. ;)

Next, I'd love another GTA game in the vein of Vice City/San Andreas. Bring it on! If GTA 4 is to GTA 3 as Vice City would be to GTA 4: (Subtitle), then it could turn out amazing. :)

I say no. The DLC episodes are big enough to keep the team busy for the first few months of the year. I think we'll be seeing this in 2010.

Why the hell hasn't someone made a GTA like game that feels like a Guy Ritchie movie? I don't want to see "Easter Promises, the video game" I want to see "Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels" the video game.

I thought that was the whole point of the "Getaway" game series?

DLC isn't a full console version. Meaning you get less $$$ for DLC than full console version. Stockholders want to see streams of revenue every year not just every other year. I think a few years ago, R* could delay the releases. I don't think that is economically feasible anymore.

I think an American in a foreign city would be great for another GTA game. We had an immegrant character coming to America in 4, which could lead the way for a guy who has to leave the US in 4.5...I'd be excited to see what they could do.

Aside from drift racing. That I would not be excited for.

Nah, it would need to be Rab C. Nesbitt as the main character.

GTA: Obvious Cash-In.

If a new GTA is released I'm pretty sure that MS will be pissed.

I guess that thats why all the GTA's take place on magic murder island. Make what you know right? ;)

Why not put it in Montreal? With the ridiculous road designs and all the horrible no right turns or no left turn, and one way streets will be such fun. As an added bonus the driving alone with realistic Montreal drivers will be insane. Yep.. All that french swearing and aggressive driving will make the game fun...rambling

That would be fun to watch the two factions of fanboys rioting over that event. I'd bring the popcorn...

I doubt Microsoft would be happy if their $50 million dollar DLC was overshadowed by the everyone moving on to the next GTA game.

The lameness of the first DLC pack kind of overshadowed the whole thing already. :p

Those who wanted the DLC will have played it by the next game comes out if it did hit in November. It's not really overshadowing their exclusive. MS knows after a few months, the hardcore are looking for their next fix. And then GTA IV could be packaged with DLC as a GOTY edition, exclusive on the 360 ;)

Aren't they due for a new "stories" game? I always wondered where San Andreas Stories was.
