I haven't played the game in a while, so I don't know if I can help or not, but I'll try.

In my experience, putting rescue requests on Wi-Fi tends to work in about a day.

Also, trading friend codes is WAY faster than those passwords. Mine:

...and nope, looks like I wasn't able to save you. And it looks like it only lets you try 3 times before giving up. Sorry.

Thanks for trying, though. :)

I just read the whole thread, I didn't realize so many people had died trying the original rescue. I usually don't bring a whole lot of gear on rescue attempts, but when I booted up the game I happened to have a full inventory from the last time I played the game a couple months ago, also for a rescue request.

I had two chiropractic jars going in, half a dozen jars of holding with various low level herbs, scrolls and staffs. I didn't have a sword or shield, however, but I figured I'd probably come across some stuff along the way.

I found a Polearm+2 in one of the first four levels, but I didn't find a shield until much later on, and my somewhat brisk pace meant that I wasn't leveling at the fastest possible rate, and soon stuff began to really hurt. Fortunately, I came across a couple chiropractic jars, which I proceeded to burn through. I ate all my healing herbs at full health to extend my life bar to help compensate too.

Since I had a shitload of staffs, I decided to play it safe and paralyze problematic enemies that weren't worth my time. I mostly disabled rice changers, master hens, and purple slimes (I didn't happen to find a plating scroll). I also used a staff of sloth sparingly to deal with a couple foes, including a Kingy that I trained into a couple other monsters to level him up, and then I kited the slowed Kingy to snag the XP.

Floor 23 was standard shock and awe. I popped a power-up scroll immediately, as well as a scroll of light for good measure. As soon as I stepped foot into the monster house I read a scroll of confusion and hauled ass to the corpse. I didn't even get to check out the items in the room, I was too worried that one of the monsters would accidentally one-shot another one and level up.

You need to set out on an adventure with the explicit goal of enacting a rescue. Talk to the guy closest to the exit from canyon hamlet, after setting up the rescue attempt at the game's main menu.

If you'd like to practice, I'm down on L28 in a mostly-cleared monster room.

I'm assuming that one monster killed another one and leveled up. This mostly happens with projectile enemies, like the bowboy, whose arrows will hit other monsters if they're in the path of the arrow. Monsters also will attack one another if they're confused or if you used a doppelganger rod on one.

Kingys will target whatever is closest to them, including other monsters. If you're not prepared it's easy for a kingy to level up multiple times.

Everyone vs Dinosaurs
02-09-2009, 09:40 AM
So certain monsters will purposefully attack other monsters, thus making them stronger?

And when you level up, your new stats are updated automatically, right? I don't recall ever using one of those screens to select what I wanted.

If so, that means that equipment is of great importance?

Enemies with projectiles will always target you, but if the projectile hits another monster before it reaches you, the monster will take damage. If the monster dies, the enemy that fired the projectile will level up.

Kingys will attack anything, and thus can frequently level up.

If you are wearing a trap armband, a Curse Girl can level up by stepping on a curse trap, and a Slime can level up by stepping on a rust trap.

A confused enemy cannot distinguish friend from foe, and can potentially attack other monsters, which, if killed, will level them up.

All monsters will target a doppelganger, and the monster that kills it will level up.

Leveled up monsters have different names, appearances, and abilities than their lower level relatives. For example: A Rice Baby is yellow and has no special abilities, a Rice Changer is red and can change any item in your inventory into a riceball, a Rice Boss is blue and can change Shiren into a riceball temporarily; if you accidentally step on a rotten trap as a riceball, you will instantly die.

Oh, I know what happened to you. You killed an Evil Solider. Three turns after they die, a ghost appears in the spot you killed them. That ghost will seek out the first monster it can find, and will possess the first monster it sees. Possessing a monster levels it up, and that leveled up monster killed you.

The best way to learn is through experience and making mistakes. Make sure you talk to all the people in the towns, and any NPCs you encounter in the dungeons.

Also, be sure you're working your way through Fey's Puzzles in the very first town. There's 50 of them, and each one teaches you something about the mechanics of the game, these provide invaluable information about how to get out of tricky situations. You'll also get a bonus item for each puzzle you complete.

Each time you start on a new journey, first complete one of Fey's Puzzles to get an item, then go to the restaurant on the west end of town to get a free riceball. Other than that, just try to learn from your mistakes, and be sure to use your equipment liberally, as you're just going to lose it if you die.

In this specific instance, an NPC tells you about it. There's also an NPC to explain field bandit and rice changer.

Once you pass the point of no return, the enemies are a lot more mysterious and you have to figure it out for yourself, presumably because you're the first to make it that far.

In my opinion the game of Shiren is figuring out these things. Once you understand everything that's going on, the game becomes much more of a mechanical exercise (although by no means are you assured of winning at that point).

I've managed to clear the main Table Mountain dungeon now, although I haven't attempted anything else yet.

Seriously man. The trap dungeon is ridiculous. I've been trying to tackle the food dungeon but it's just crazy hard to do it in one adventure. I haven't had the patience or time to go back and forth and grab a ton of big riceballs and herb of lifes to munch down before going in. The furthest I got was floor 26 when I ran out of bufu charges and low level meat to turn shit into. A monster house on 25 owned my face in and left me on my last limbs. If you don't find a hide shield on the first few floors though, you're gonna run out of food fast.

A happy armband would make a world of difference, though.

You were almost there, you can complete the food dungeon starting around floor 25.

Rationing your food is part of the reason I liked that dungeon so much, you had to balance using low level food to transform monsters with eating food to restore health. If you're having hunger problems, I think there are a couple of tricks.

If you encounter a rice changer, it's often a good idea to let him attack you for a few turns so he can generate some rice balls. I've heard that monsters you kill as a member of the rice family have a high chance of dropping riceballs too. You can also get back to 100% fullness if you're killed as a member of the Evil Soldier family. You can also increase your max fullness by using a Polygon Spin's special ability.

Can complete? I admit I was rushing floors after 25 because of the huge difficulty jump, but I don't think I noticed a way to finish?

The only reason I made it that far was because of the massive amount of bufu staves that dropped.

You can also get back to 100% fullness if you're killed as a member of the Evil Soldier family.

That is a life saver, in both the fullness and getting into a strong, useful monster.

You can also increase your max fullness by using a Polygon Spin's special ability.

I had no idea... because that monster took so much damage it was very dangerous to stay in him for very long.

The whole premise behind the dungeon is that you're going in to rescue that dude that got lost in there. He starts spawning on level 25, and should appear on subsequent levels too. You finish the dungeon by talking to him as he wanders around the map. The best thing to do is to hold on to a few owl meats. Eating an owl meat functions just like reading a scroll of light, so you should be able to immediately tell if he's wandering around on your floor.

I've finished Table Mountain, Food Dungeon, and Scroll Cave. Tainted Path, Ceremonial Cave, and Path of the Dead all require you to grind uber gear, which doesn't seem as interesting to me, so I've made very little progress working on those. Now I'm mostly doing Fey's Final Puzzle runs, and occasionally leveling up some gear in case I decide to go for one of the grind dungeons.

Frankly, I have no idea what you need to get through the bonus dungeons. It seems like a lot of people don't even attempt them until they've got the best possible equipment: A firebrand +99 and an armor ward +55, both with lots of melds, plus staffs with 70 or so charges on them.

That could be completely overkill, people tend to grind way more than they need to. I've heard of people using a Mastersword+30 to beat table mountain, whereas I finished it without any special equipment.

On the other hand, the stories I've heard make the bonus dungeons sound so hard that I'm terrified of going in unprepared and losing the equipment I've been slowly making.

I think I've currently got an Armor Ward+16 with gold plating, halved hunger, and theft prevention, and two Masterswords, one is +31 and the other is +28, I'll meld the two together the next time I get a melding jar. Is that good enough to make it through the Ceremonial Cave, supposedly the easiest of the three? I have no idea.

That could be completely overkill, people tend to grind way more than they need to. I've heard of people using a Mastersword+30 to beat table mountain, whereas I finished it without any special equipment.

I was a victim of those stories. I heard so many horror stories about how hard Table Mountain was and how people barely beat it with an Armor Ward + 30 or something that I uber grinded my gear and beat Table Mountain with a Master Sword + 35 and an Armor Ward +38 with Half hunger and a ton of other melds. I cursed those stories the whole time for making me overlevel so much.

So where are these ceremonial paths and path of the dead actually located? Inside the City of Gold?

Ceremonial Path is located in Cryptic Rock Valley, the point of no return in the main quest.

To reach the Ravine of the Dead, you need to complete the Bungee Jumping sidequest, which requires you to bring Pekeji to Janus Valley.

I don't need a rescue, but I did die today on the first floor of Fey's Final Puzzle.

I picked up a cursed weapon, and decided to see if any of my unidentified scrolls were a Scroll of Blessing. The first one I read was a Monster House scroll, and I was immediately surrounded by mammels on all sides. Even though I was only a square away from the exit, I couldn't kill my way through the horde before they nibbled me to death one HP at a time.

That's hilarious and awesome and horrible all at the same time!

In yesterday's run through the final puzzle, I was at almost no HP and running from a monster behind me towards the exit when another monster cut me off from the other side of the hallway.

I had exactly one turn to save my ass, so I looked through my inventory. I had a bunch of unidentified herbs, but I knew none of them were restorative herbs, so my chances of healing up and winning were slim. I decided I'd be better off reading one of my unidentified scrolls.

The first one I read let me choose an inventory item to target with the spell, which meant the scroll was a Riceball Scroll, an Extraction Scroll, a Scroll of Blessing, or a Scroll of Identity. None of these would help me out; I decided to read the next scroll instead.

It turns out to be a Monster Scroll, I'm teleported out of the hallway and to the closest room, which is immediately filled as if it's a normal Monster House: it's now filled with monsters, traps, and tons of items, and the monsters get to move first. Fortunately, only one monster is in range, and leaves me with 1 HP after attacking. In desperation, I read the next unidentified scroll in my inventory, which ends up being a Blastwave Scroll, which kills every single enemy in the room in one blow.

The XP levels me up three levels, and I'm in the middle of picking up the huge assortment of goodies on the floor now. I hope I don't screw this one up too badly...

Turned out a little better than your last random scroll reading session then. :)
I need to start playing Shiren again.

Quick question: I know you can reveal traps by swinging your weapon at them, but is there any way to move over the trap square safely once you've done so?
A couple of times, I've had a trap block the only way out of an area and I just couldn't avoid it even though I knew exactly where it was.

There's a couple of ways to avoid a trap in that kind of situation, but there's all situational, there's no bulletproof method.

If you have a pickaxe, you could dig around the trap.

If you have any kind of monster meat, you can eat it and bypass the trap since monsters don't trigger traps.

If you have a Trap Armband, you can pick up and collect traps when you walk over them.

If you have a switching staff, you can swing it into the room and swap places with a monster.

There's also armbands that prevent many of the common status aliments that traps can impose. Antidrain Armbands will prevent you from losing STR from a poison arrow trap, etc.

There's a bunch of other situational options too, but sometimes you have no choice but to step on a trap and hope it doesn't trigger. In some cases where I've been unable to avoid a trap, I've gotten around it by triggering a spring trap earlier in the level, or throwing a Bottomless Jar at a wall, which creates a bunch of pitfall traps which, when triggered, will drop you down to the next floor and only damage you a couple of points.

I was in a forest and some wraith leveled up 3 times and had this staff that he could cast OVER AND OVER with. Turned me into a rice ball 3 or 4 times, confused me, even dropped me a level before I got cornered and died.

Was doing very well and then I got boned by a sleep trap and slowly had my health whittled down by a mini tank.

Anyone who feels up to it, a rescue would be appreciated, I must go further!
