The first episode of 2009 is now available (http://ingamechat.net/audio/IGC20090108.mp3).

There wasn’t supposed to be an episode for you this week. Scheduling conflicts and sickness among the group just caused too many problems. Then Tuesday evening happened. And we really wish it hadn’t.

The news of UGO buying 1UP had been rumored for some time and along with that the end of EGM. There were, however, no proceeding rumors of the massive cuts that ended up being made that night. One of those cuts happens to be a very good friend of ours. Philip Kollar, the former news editor for 1UP, joins us tonight and gives us some insight into just what exactly happened, how it happened, why, and what’s next.

It’s safe to say that after our talk with Philip we’ve got no worries about his future and we’re equally confident with everyone else involved as well. It’s never good when things like this happen, but when they happen to a group of people like this, there can be nothing but good things for them in the near future.

Shouldn't this really be called the 1Upisode?

Sad that things went down like they did, though it's great that you were able talk to him. I look forward to listening to this tomorrow when donating blood platelets.

I'm glad you guys got Phil on the show and I can't wait to hear this ep. I was just listening to an episode of 1UP Yours from the beginning of the December and couldn't help but shake my head during the start of the episode when they were talking about other companies where massive lay-offs were happening. A lot of what they were saying just struck me as being very poignant given the happenings this past week.

I have one last 1UpFM to listen to and I'm not sure where and when I should listen to it, as it'll be the last episode and unlike 1 Up Yours, I felt like I really was getting to know the crew and have been listening to them a lot longer than I was listening to the grown-ups table. Sigh.

Listen to it now! And then go listen to Rebel FM at http://www.eat-sleep-game.com!

And at least the final 1UP FM is a good intro to 2009 and features three of the talented folks who remain at 1UP.

We still need a rim-shot smiley.

It was very sad that it happened in the way that it did, and I'm actually glad we had him on a few days after rather than that very night. Having him on that night would have made for a pretty depressing show, but as it is now, I think the future looks a lot more hopeful for those involved.

Sadly enough, last night while recording this I learned one of the jocks at the station we record at was cut. It's a bit scary. Like standing in a room and watching the walls fall down. You just kind of look at floor and wonder if it'll fall out from under you as well.

Kef!!! Don't stay a stranger around here, okay? And thanks again for coming on the show. We intend on having you on for every single career choice you make.

Just finished up the episode morning. Y'know, after hearing Scott say Phil's handle on the air, I realized I've been pronouncing it in my head ALL wrong. I don't know why but I've always said it as "KefkaTron" in my head. It's like I see the first half of his handle and then ignore the rest, making it up in my head.

It's definitely sad to hear so many good people lost their jobs. When I first heard the news I was pretty dumbstruck. It was like someone had knocked the wind out of me. Being a fan of the podcasts and video material on the site, I felt like I had really gotten to know a lot of the personalities.

It's good to hear you guys will be doing various projects like Rebel FM. I'll definitely be keeping up with whatever you guys do. I hope everyone is able to find more concrete work. Good luck!

I'll inaugurate my brand new basement workroom by playing the final 1UpFM podcast next week when I start moving things in. I think that'll be a good time to say goodbye to the old and hello to the new!

I listened to Rebel FM and this episode of In-Game Chat, and the entirety of the fallout hit me pretty hard. I will continue to follow what happens at 1UP, because I love the guys who are still there, but I'm really pulling for the Eat-Sleep-Game crew. I hope that Ryan can get his new video podcast running soon and I hope that everyone can just get back to doing what they love, which is simply writing about games.

This all hit me last night around midnight. I read tons of blogposts from those who were effected. It's so very sad. I lost three of my favorite podcasts in one day.

It's good to see you around here Phil and I'm glad to hear that you've got plans in the works. :)

I'm not sure if it's me, but I still can't get this episode to load up on iTunes. Heck, I don't have any episodes loading for me in the iTunes store page either... Did I break iTunes?

Nope. Somehow our podcast Wordpress plugin broke. I'm not sure how or why, but upgrading to the newest version seems to have cured it.

Hey Scott, completely unrelated to any of this, if you didn't catch it, there an interview (http://www.gamesetwatch.com/2009/01/gamesetinterview_pat_lawlor.php) with the designer of the FunHouse pinball machine (and several others) over at GameSetWatch you might enjoy. :) There's a brief paragraph about the design and popularity of FunHouse in it, and they also discuss other tables and pinball design in general.

If he's doing blog interviews, maybe he also secretly yearns to do podcast interviews. ;)
